Pathologic diagnosis, origin, and natural history of pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Mucinous ascites and pools of mucin within the peritoneal cavity associated with neoplastic, mucinous epithelium are the characteristic features of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). Clinically, PMP presents with abdominal distension and gelatinous ascites. In female patients, pelvic masses can be seen. Radiologic findings on computed tomography include scalloping of the hepatic and splenic margins and dense ascites. Surgically, PMP is encountered as grossly visible mucin in the peritoneal cavity. The presence of mucin outside of the appendix, in the right lower quadrant, and beyond is an important

Potential mucolytic agents for mucinous ascites from pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a disease characterised by the accumulation of mucinous ascites. Thus far, cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has been shown to be effective at eradicating disease. Chemotherapy has been less effective, providing disease stabilization but not demonstrating significant treatment responses. Mucolytic is a potential class of drug that may be exploited in the chemical management of this disease. A variety of potential mucolytic agents are explored in this review providing evidence of basic biochemical evidence of its effi

Radiologic findings of urachal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma causing pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Urachal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma causing pseudomyxoma peritonei is very rare. We report a case of a 59-year-old man with urachal mucinous adenocarcinoma associated with pseudomyxoma peritonei, and our radiologic findings. Ultrasonography revealed a well delineated, large cystic tumor adjacent to the anterior wall of the abdomen. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor of which the left posterior wall was defective. A large amount of ascites was present in the peritoneal cavity. The ascites caused displacement of the intestinal structures toward the dorsal region.

Management of mucinous urachal neoplasm presenting as pseudomyxoma peritonei.

BACKGROUND: Mucinous neoplasms of the urachus are rare malignancies so that the physicians' index of suspicion for a timely and accurate diagnosis is low. Also, this disease may present with a wide variety of symptoms and signs. METHODS: Two patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei as the initial presentation of urachal mucinous adenocarcinoma were treated successfully. The medical literature regarding treatment options for this manifestation of the disease was searched. RESULTS: Two patients with large volume of pseudomyxoma peritonei originating in a mucinous urachal neoplasm were treated with

Diagnostic Pitfalls in Peritoneal Carcinomatosis: A Case of Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare pathological condition posing significant diagnostic and management challenges. This article presents a clinical case of a 58-year-old female who was initially diagnosed with stage III primary peritoneal carcinoma. Following neoadjuvant chemotherapy, a diagnostic re-evaluation was performed with histopathological and immunohistochemical review of biopsy specimens, which led to a revised diagnosis of mucinous carcinoma with features consistent with PMP. The patient subsequently underwent complete cytoreductive surgery (CRS) followed by hyperthermic intrape

Pseudomyxoma Peritonei: A Case Report of a Patient With Unexplained Granulomas.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a rare type of neoplasm, characterized by the presence of mucinous tumors on the peritoneal surface. The authors report the case of a 79-year-old male who came to the hospital with abdominal pain and distension, weight loss, and increased abdominal perimeter. Histopathology is fundamental for making the diagnosis. Survival depends on the extent of the neoplasm. This case reveals the challenges of reaching an accurate and prompt diagnosis of pseudomyxoma peritonei.

The Frontiers of Appendiceal Controversies: Mucinous Neoplasms and Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms show a range of morphologic features and biological risk. At one end of the spectrum, high-grade adenocarcinomas are cytologically malignant with infiltrative invasion, lymph node metastases, and behavior similar to that of extra-appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinomas. At the other end, mucinous neoplasms confined to the mucosa are uniformly benign. Some cases lying between these extremes have potential risk to metastasize within the abdomen despite a lack of malignant histologic features. They show "diverticulum-like," pushing invasion of mostly low-grade epitheli

Predictors of Progression of Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm to Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (AMN) can present with a spectrum of disease. Predicting factors in development of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) from AMN could aid in management and treatment. The aim of this study was to determine factors predictive of PMP from AMN. This was a retrospective multicenter study of all patients diagnosed with AMN from 2006-2017. Diagnosis of PMP was compared by (1) patient demographics, (2) tumor characteristics, and (3) surgery. Secondary end points were disease-specific survival (DSS) and overall survival (OS).One-hundred thirty-eight patients with AMN were identi

Pseudomyxoma Peritonei-An Unusual Cause of Ascites: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Ascites in patients with cardiac disease can be multifactorial. Serum ascitic albumin gradient (SAAG) helps in identifying the etiology of ascites. High SAAG ascites is related to hepatic or posthepatic causes. The causes of low SAAG ascites results include tuberculosis, peritoneal malignancy, or pancreatitis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report an unusual cause of low SAAG ascites in a 48-year-old woman with valvular heart disease. The patient presented with ascites, and cross-sectional imaging revealed a right iliac fossa mass with omental deposits. The patient was finally diagnosed

A New Etiology for the Abdominal Compartment Syndrome: Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare diagnosis with an incidence of 1-2 per million. Most cases originate from an appendix which ruptures and releases mucin into the peritoneal cavity. The progression of the disease results in obstruction and cutaneous leak. Abdominal compartment syndrome is an uncommon complication of peritoneal pseudomyxoma. In the present article, we report the case of a patient with PMP and abdominal compartment syndrome. A laparotomy to decrease the abdominal pressure was performed. Three months later, a peritonectomy with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy was p

A formulation for in situ lysis of mucin secreted in pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Although numerous clinical attempts have been made to disintegrate mucin secreted by pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), none are clinically recommended. Through examination of the pharmacologic characteristics of two novel agents, we titrated an optimized combination of bromelain and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) that demonstrates in vitro and in vivo efficacy in the dissolution of mucinous ascites from PMP. In the in vitro experiments, 1 g of mucin was incubated in varying concentrations of bromelain (0-400 µg/ml) and NAC (0-5%) individually followed by a combination before arriving at a therapeutic com

[A case of pleural extension of mucinous tumor with pseudomyxoma peritonei].

We report a case of pleural extension of mucinous tumor with pseudomyxoma peritonei. A 64-year-old man was diagnosed as pseudomyxoma peritonei according to the findings of abdominal CT scan and cytologic examination of the ascitic fluid. At laparotomy in November 2007, jelly-like ascites and a child-head size mutinous tumor involving the greater omentum, transverse colon, and ascending colon were found. Mucious nodules scattered on the undersurface of the right and left hemidiaphragms. In addition, transhiatal extension of mucinous tumors was also extended through the esophageal hiatus, sugges

Urachal adenocarcinoma presenting as pseudomyxoma peritonei: an unusual bladder tumour.

A man in his 50s presented to the emergency department with a complaint of progressively increasing swelling in the lower abdomen. Investigations revealed a large pelvic mass for which a fine needle aspiration cytology was done, which was suggestive of adenocarcinoma. He was then referred to a urologist in view of suspected urachal adenocarcinoma. Following preoperative evaluation, he was taken up for tumour excision with partial cystectomy and extended pelvic lymph node dissection. Intraoperatively, there was a growth involving the dome of the bladder with mucinous ascites and multiple omenta

Pseudomyxoma Peritonei: Exploring an unusual clinical presentation - A case report.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare clinicopathological condition characterised by mucin-producing peritoneal and omental deposits with an estimated incidence of 1-2 cases per million per year. We report a 42-year-old female patient who presented to a tertiary care hospital in Muscat, Oman, in 2023 due to a 7-year history of chronic diarrhoea associated with progressive abdominal distension over the past 2 years. Her assessment was significant for ascites. No neoplastic lesions were found on the upper and lower gastrointestinal scopes. A diagnostic ascitic tapping revealed a free flow of ge

A combinatorial culture strategy to develop pseudomyxoma peritonei organoid models.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Few preclinical models of pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) have been developed, probably due to the tumor's low incidence and its peculiar characteristics of slow growth. Therefore, there is a need to develop more refined PMP models that better reflect its characteristics. The aim of the study is to develop a culture strategy to generate organoid models derived from PMP patient samples. METHODS: We followed a strategy based on combinatorial culture conditions that include the different factors essential for PMP growth and that mimic the microenvironment present in the p

Appendiceal tumors and pseudomyxoma peritonei: current recommendations for clinical practice.

Appendiceal tumors and pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) are rare tumors. Perforated epithelial tumors of the appendix are the most common source of PMP. This disease is characterized by the presence of mucin of varying degrees of consistency, partially adherent to the surfaces. Appendiceal mucoceles themselves are also very rare and usually their treatment involves only a simple appendectomy. The aim of this study was to provide an up-to-date review of the recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of these malignancies according to the current guidelines of The Peritoneal Surface Oncology Gr
