Psoas muscle area and paraspinal muscle fat in children and young adults with or without obesity and fatty liver.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the muscle condition in children with obesity. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of obesity and fatty liver on muscle area and muscle fat in children and young adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated consecutive liver fat quantification MRIs in children and young adults between June 2015 and April 2019. We obtained hepatic fat and paraspinal muscle fat at mid L2 from the fat map, psoas muscle area (PMA) at mid L3, and z-score of PMA. The patient's age, height and weight at the time of the MRI were recorded. Body mass index (BMI) z-score was also calc

Factors influencing slippage after microsurgical single level lumbar spinal decompression surgery - Are the psoas and multifidus muscles involved?

PURPOSE: Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) require microsurgical decompression (MSD) surgery; however, MSD is often associated with postoperative instability at the operated level. Paraspinal muscles support the spinal column; lately, paraspinal volume has been used as a good indicator of sarcopenia. This study aimed to determine preoperative radiological factors, including paraspinal muscle volume, associated with postoperative slippage progression after MSD in LSS patients. METHODS: Patients undergoing single-level (L3/4 or L4/5) MSD for symptomatic LSS and followed-up for ≥ 5 year

Transcriptomic profiles of muscular dystrophy with myositis (mdm) in extensor digitorum longus, psoas, and soleus muscles from mice.

BACKGROUND: Titinopathies are inherited muscular diseases triggered by genetic mutations in the titin gene. Muscular dystrophy with myositis (mdm) is one such disease caused by a LINE repeat insertion, leading to exon skipping and an 83-amino acid residue deletion in the N2A-PEVK region of mouse titin. This region has been implicated in a number of titin-titin ligand interactions, hence are important for myocyte signaling and health. Mice with this mdm mutation develop a severe and progressive muscle degeneration. The range of phenotypic differences observed in mdm mice shows that the deletion

Cutoff Value of Psoas Muscle Area as Reduced Muscle Mass and Its Association with Acute Pancreatitis in China.

OBJECTIVE: The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) has proposed criteria for the diagnosis of malnutrition, one of which is reduced muscle mass. Computed tomography (CT) assessment of psoas muscle area (PMA) has been used to estimate muscle mass in patients, including those with acute pancreatitis (AP). The present study aimed to define the cutoff value of PMA indicative of reduced muscle mass in patients with AP and to assess the impact of reduced muscle mass on the severity and early complications of AP. METHODS: Clinical data of 269 patients with AP were analyzed retrospect

[Tropical pyomyositis of the iliacus, obturator internus, piriformis and psoas major muscles in an immunocompetent patient with claudication].

INTRODUCTION: Pyomyositis is a term that denotes pyogenic infection usually primary skeletal muscle, associated with hematogenous dispersion due to transient bacteremia, or penetrating trauma, usually forming abscesses. Classically described frequently in tropical areas and predominantly affecting the lower limb musculature, however, in recent decades it has increasingly been associated with areas of temperate climates and relatively more frequently in immunosuppressed patients, being the patients under 30 years the most affected. CLINICAL CASE: Male of 15 years without relevant medical histo

Psoas Muscle Index and Density as Prognostic Predictors in Patients Hospitalized with Acute Pancreatitis.

Background: Early prognostication of acute pancreatitis (AP) patients for those at high risk of complications during hospitalization can facilitate clinical decision-making. Sarcopenia has been proven to be a risk factor for poor prognosis in patients with AP. We aimed to evaluate the association between the muscle parameters measured in computed tomography (CT) and the clinical outcomes of hospitalized patients with AP. Methods: A total of 132 consecutive patients hospitalized between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2021 for AP with a valid CT scan were analyzed. The first CT conducted during

Botulinum Toxin Injection for Intractable Pain in Cancer Patients With Psoas Muscle Invasion.

Muscle invasion (MI) in patients with far-advanced cancer is often accompanied with pain. Conventional treatments used for pain relief may be associated with several side effects. We describe two cases of botulinum toxin injection (BTI) for relieving intractable pain in patients of far-advanced cancer having MI. The patients presented with persistent intractable pain that did not respond to conventional treatments, such as analgesic medications, epidural steroid injection, and radiotherapy. BTI relieved the intractable pain in these cases for at least 9-12 weeks without any reported side effec

A rare primary hydatid cyst of the psoas muscle in a rural setting: A case presentation.

Hydatid cyst is a zoonosis caused mainly by the larval stage of the cestode worm Echinococcus granulosus, hydatidosis is frequently found in sheep-raising countries such as the Mediterranean countries. The disease usually involves the liver (75%) and lung (15%). We describe a case of hydatid cyst of the psoas muscle; we are reporting this case because of its rarity and its difficulty to diagnose clinically. A 16 -year-old female from rural setting, presented to the department of surgery of our institution, with complaints of right flank pain. On abdominal examination, there was sensitization i

Full-endoscopic debridement and drainage treating spine infection and psoas muscle abscess.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, full-endoscopic debridement and drainage (FEDD) is gaining popularity treating spondylodiscitis. Comparing to tradition open surgery, FEDD possess many advantages including lower anesthesia risk and minimally invasiveness. In this study, we report our surgical technique of FEDD and preliminary clinical outcome in 34 consecutive patients with minimum 12 months follow-up. METHODS: In our institute, "early intervention and minimally invasive surgery" is our primary strategy to treat spine infection. Surgical approaches of FEDD include transforaminal and interlaminar

Bilateral Femoral Neuropathy Following Psoas Muscle Hematomas Caused by Enoxaparin Therapy.

BACKGROUND Femoral neuropathy as a result of retroperitoneal hemorrhage most commonly occurs following pelvic and lower extremity trauma, but has been described to develop as a less frequent complication of anticoagulation. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 64-year-old white woman who was being treated for pulmonary embolism and deep venous thrombosis with enoxaparin. In the course of her treatment, she was noted to be hypotensive, with a sudden drop in hematocrit. She had been previously ambulatory, but noted an inability to move her bilateral lower extremities. Non-tuberculous cold abscess of the psoas muscle--an unusual manifestation of colocutaneous fistula.

We report here a case of colocutaneous fistula drained from the retroperitoneal space mimicking a cold abscess of the psoas muscle. A 60-year-old diabetic woman with a 6-year history of a chronic draining sinus over her right thigh had been treated intermittently with antibiotics. At presentation, she had no systemic toxic signs nor other constitutional symptoms. The patient was inadequately managed by curettage at first under the tentative diagnosis of tuberculous cold abscess. After the correct diagnosis of colocutaneous fistula, right nephrectomy and right hemicolectomy with ileotransverse

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the psoas muscle presenting as a retroperitoneal mass: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of intermediate biological potential characterized by myofibroblastic spindle-cell proliferation and a variable inflammatory infiltrate. Although IMT may arise in a wide range of anatomical locations, primary involvement of the psoas muscle is exceptionally uncommon and may present significant diagnostic challenges due to its nonspecific clinical and radiological features. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old man presented with progressive left flank and left iliac fossa pain radiating to the back and left lower

Prognostic value of psoas muscle area and pleural effusion in patients undergoing TAVI.

BACKGROUND: Radiographic markers such as psoas muscle area (PMA) and pleural effusion have been linked to mortality after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). We examined their relationship with cause-specific mortality and their incremental prognostic value beyond EuroSCORE II. METHODS: This retrospective study included 1090 consecutive TAVI patients treated at Heart Hospital, Tampere University Hospital between 2008 and 2020. Preoperative CT scans were reviewed for L3-level PMA and pleural effusion (>10 mm thickness). Subdistribution hazard models adjusted for age, sex, BMI, and

Bilateral Inguinal Hernia With Psoas Muscle Involvement: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Inguinal hernia is one of the most common conditions in general surgery; however, atypical variants extending beyond the conventional myopectineal boundaries are infrequently encountered. Herniation involving the psoas muscle is exceptionally rare due to its deep retroperitoneal location and is often identified only during surgical exploration. We report the case of an 86-year-old woman who presented with persistent right inguinofemoral pain without a palpable groin mass. Preoperative evaluation, including prior cross-sectional imaging, did not demonstrate a definitive inguinal defect. Owing t

Radiographic Measurement of Psoas Muscle Width: A Simple and Reliable Screening Tool for Sarcopenia.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia, characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength, is associated with adverse outcomes, including increased postoperative complications in patients with orthopaedic conditions. Although computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remain the gold-standard modalities for assessing sarcopenia, their cost, radiation exposure, and limited availability restrict widespread screening. This study investigated the potential of lumbar spine radiographs as a practical alternative for sarcopenia screening. METHODS: We retrospectively revie

Isolated Psoas Muscle Metastasis From Ampullary Carcinoma: A Report of a Rare Case.

Ampullary carcinoma is a rare malignancy arising from the ampulla of Vater. It commonly presents with obstructive jaundice and typically metastasizes to regional lymph nodes, the liver, lungs, and peritoneum. Skeletal muscle metastasis is extremely uncommon, and involvement of the psoas muscle is particularly rare. We report the case of a 67-year-old man presenting with obstructive jaundice and cholestatic liver function abnormalities. Cross-sectional imaging demonstrated dilation of both the common bile duct and pancreatic duct, consistent with the classic double-duct sign, without a clearly
