Psychiatrists' familiarity with legal statutes governing emergency involuntary hospitalization.

The authors sent out questionnaires regarding knowledge of statutes governing emergency involuntary hospitalization to psychiatrists in Connecticut and in the District of Columbia. Fifty-five percent (N=207) of the sample in Connecticut and 25% (N=87) of the sample in the District of Columbia responded. The responses showed that few of these psychiatrists had a thorough familiarity with the legal statutes governing emergency involuntary hospitalization in their jurisdictions. The most frequently cited criterion was the dangerousness standard, especially in the District of Columbia sample, and

European psychiatrists' approaches to the treatment of bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The European Psychiatric Association (EPA) undertook a study to investigate treatment preferences of European psychiatrists towards Bipolar Disorder (BD), as part of the Ambassador programme series of surveys. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey among psychiatrists and psychiatry trainees from 40 European countries. The questionnaire contained clinical vignettes of different phases of BD including manic, rapid cycling, mixed, hypomanic, and depressive episodes, for both initial and subsequent treatment strategies. RESULTS: The final sample consisted of 654 parti

Concepts of Mental Disorders Among Psychiatrists, Psychologists, and Theologians.

The objective of this study was to compare the perspectives of psychiatrists, psychologists, and theologians on schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and antisocial personality disorder. A cross-sectional research design was utilized, involving a random sample selected from the official registries of these professionals. The findings revealed significant differences in how these groups conceptualize mental disorders. The preferred concepts varied depending on the specific disorder. For instance, when it came to schizophrenia, psychiatrists showed a greater inclination towards the psychodynamic c

Why Should Psychiatrists and Neuroscientists Worry about Paraoxonase 1?

BACKGROUND: Nitro-oxidative stress (NOS) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. The activity of the polymorphic antioxidant enzyme paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is altered in diseases where NOS is involved. PON1 activity may be estimated using different substrates some of which are influenced by PON1 polymorphisms. OBJECTIVES: 1) to review the association between PON1 activities and psychiatric diseases using a standardized PON1 substrate terminology in order to offer a state-of-the-art review; and 2) to review the efficacy of different strategies (nutrition, drugs, lifes

Psychiatrists' emotional reactions: Useful for precise diagnosis in adolescence?

Therapist response (countertransference) can be defined as the range of emotions a clinician experiences when interacting with a patient. Previous research has shown that this reaction plays an important role in the establishment of the therapeutic relationship, and that certain psychiatric disorders are systematically related to strong countertransference reactions in clinicians. For this study, 30 videotaped sessions were retrospectively analyzed by one observer using the Therapist Response Questionnaire (TRQ). The authors aimed to investigate the differences in therapist response between an

Metabolic syndrome and bipolar disorder: what should psychiatrists know?

This paper reviews the association between bipolar disorder (BD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS), focusing on the etiopathogenetic and pathophysiological aspects of this association and on the recommendations for preventing and managing MetS in patients with BD. We conducted a nonsystematic literature review by means of a MEDLINE search. The exact causal relationship between MetS and BD is still uncertain. The side effects of psychotropic medications may be a major contributor to the increased rates of MetS in patients with BD. Other factors such as unhealthy lifestyles, common neuroendocrine an

What Psychiatrists Should Know about Genes and Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease is a devastating illness, and patients may be exceptionally concerned that they have genes that contribute to this illness, especially if there is a family history of Alzheimer's disease. This article reviews core findings regarding the genes that contribute to the early-onset (familial) and late-onset forms of Alzheimer's disease and related findings regarding the needs of psychiatrists when discussing the disease with patients. Previously, clinicians believed that patients who tested positive for the APOE gene linked to late-onset Alzheimer's disease would be harmed by th

Consultant psychiatrists' experience of workplace violence - a national survey.

OBJECTIVES: In recent years there have been a number of high profile cases in Irish psychiatry where consultant psychiatrists have been subjected to serious physical assaults. The last survey of assaults on consultant psychiatrists in Ireland was carried out in 1998. Therefore we sought to update the data on this topic. METHOD: An anonymous questionnaire was sent out by post to all consultant psychiatrists (n = 330) identified as currently working in the Republic of Ireland. RESULTS: The response rate was 48.2%. Sixty per cent of respondents were working in general adult psychiatry and respo

Canadian and American psychiatrists' attitudes toward dissociative disorders diagnoses.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the opinions of Canadian psychiatrists regarding dissociative disorder diagnoses with those of previously surveyed American psychiatrists. METHOD: We sent a 1-page questionnaire to a stratified representative sample of 550 Canadian psychiatrists. RESULTS: Eighty percent of Canadian psychiatrists responded. Fewer than one-third replied that dissociative amnesia and dissociative identity disorder should be included without reservations in the DSM-IV; fewer than 1 in 7 felt that the validity of these diagnoses was supported by strong scientific evidence. Psychostimulants and psychiatrists: the Trent Adult Psychiatry Psychostimulant Survey.

This study reports upon the results of a postal questionnaire survey of 107 adult psychiatrists which investigated their current use of psychostimulant pharmacotherapy and their attitudes towards the diagnostic status of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adulthood. Of the 88 respondents, only a minority of 11 (12.5%) used psychostimulants in their usual practice, albeit very infrequently (one or two prescriptions per year on average). Methylphenidate hydrochloride ('Ritalin') was the prescribers' most popular agent and 'narcolepsy' was the most frequently cited clinical indica

The intoxication of immediacy: psychiatrist's reflections on algorithmic psychiatry.

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into psychiatric practice poses a profound yet under-examined threat to core clinical faculties. Drawing on 'cognitive debt', this article explores the 'atrophy' of the psychiatric encounter. By collapsing temporality and saturating uncertainty with instant information, artificial intelligence disrupts the capacity to tolerate ambivalence and dwell in the unknown. Referencing Jaspers' 'incomprehensible void' and Laing's 'ontological insecurity', the author argues that the current 'intoxication of immediacy' may recast psychiatrists as executors

The experience and impact of patient's suicide on psychiatrists in Malaysia.

INTRODUCTION: Patient suicide is one of the most distressing clinical events a psychiatrist can encounter, yet research in lower-middle-income countries remains limited. The main objectives of this study were to examine the emotional and professional impact of patient suicide on psychiatrists in Malaysia and to identify their support needs following such events. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among psychiatrists working in government, university, and private healthcare settings across Malaysia. Participants completed an online questionnaire exploring experiences of patient su
