In an attempt to define and resolve patient and staff needs with regard to the psychological, social and economic problems in clinical otolaryngology, psychiatry/otolaryngology rounds were established in the Department of Otolaryngology 18 months ago. These weekly rounds have contributed greatly to improved patient care and better physician-nurse relations. They have also served a significant educational role for residents, medical students and other members of the patient care team. At present the rounds are attended by the inpatient nursing staff, 2 physicians, 6 residents, 3 medical student

Psychiatry is characterized by several distinctive features: (1) it sometimes provides treatment against a patient's will or preferences; (2) it intervenes in patients' minds through physico-chemical means, such as psychotropic medication; (3) it treats patients' utterances not as reports of facts but as signs of illness; and (4) it may attribute patients' inappropriate words or actions to mental disorder, thereby exempting them from the responsibility ordinarily borne by a moral agent. This paper reexamines the ethical unease inherent in these psychiatric practices through the lens of patient

For more than a century, psychiatry has established its clinical practice on syndrome-based descriptions grouped into exclusive diagnostic categories and on the prescription of psychotropic drugs aimed at modifying signs and symptoms, with etiological hypotheses formulated from different theoretical frameworks, ranging from psychoanalytic to neurobiological. Recent research from a neuroscientific theoretical framework suggests that different psychiatric illnesses are interconnected at different levels. The approach to mental disorders from this new perspective has generated more precise etiolo

Psychiatry risks losing its conceptual boundaries as the scope of its concern expands to include all forms of human unhappiness. This editorial argues that the discipline must distinguish clearly between illness and adversity, recognising that not all suffering is pathological. Drawing on historical and contemporary debates - from Jaspers' foundational dualism to Engel's biopsychosocial model, and from diagnostic inflation to the medicalisation of social distress - the paper contends that integration without limits leads to dissolution. Psychiatry's legitimacy depends not on the eradication of

Over the past five years, the literature on the psychiatric use of psychedelic and related treatments has expanded substantially. Several randomized controlled trials and pooled analyses have been conducted in mood disorders, treatment-resistant depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Trial methodology, however, remains a fundamental source of uncertainty, and despite the popularity of the field, the clinical evidence is still weak. Psilocybin produces consistent and often large improvements in major depressive disorder, yet in the most rigorous trials, the predefined primary endpoint

Although diagnostic and therapeutic issues are relatively settled in formal psychiatry, there is considerable confusion among the public. In the real world, there is notable misunderstanding of terminology and concepts, not only of diagnoses and treatments, but also of the titles and characteristics of mental health professionals and institutions. Moreover, the numerous and conflicting treatment models that have been proposed over time have led to the lack of a clear protocol for the treatment of even a common psychiatric case. Thus, each patient must choose his or her own treatment from among

Sports psychiatry and psychotherapy is a relatively young field and is comprised of two key segments: the special features of the diagnostics and therapy of mental disorders in elite athletes and the use of exercise and sports in the development and treatment of mental disorders. Although all mental disorders can in principle also occur in (elite) athletes, there are additionally sport-specific mental disorders, such as anorexia athletica and other eating disorders, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, misuse of and dependency on performance-enhancing substances (doping) and muscle dysmorphia. This text narrates the evolution, since the 1960s, of different events that marked the history of psychiatry in the French-Canadian province of Quebec. From his personal experience, the author discusses. The evolution of the Départment de psychiatric de l'Université de Montréal fro where were issued more than 1000 psychiatrists who shaped clinical practice and research developments worthy of mention throughout the years. The evolution of diagnostic noselogy from the DSM-ii, very influenced by psychoanalysis, to the DSM-5 that is more atheortical, but that is still not based on objective data,

The history of Icelandic psychiatry is in many ways comparable with neighboring countries. Mentally ill people were badly treated in the country and received no medical treatment until at the beginning of the 20th century. Kleppur Hospital for the mentally insane was built in 1907; hence the development was approximately 150 years later than in comparable countries. Only two doctors contributed significantly to policy making in Icelandic psychiatry until 1959 and they were very different personalities. Dr Thórdur Sveinsson was famous for his interest in hydrotherapy and Dr Helgi Tómasson for h

From Ekbom's syndrome to neurotic acne, from seborrheic dermatitis to psoriasis or rosacea, without forgetting atopic dermatitis in children, these dermatological illnesses all have a direct or indirect link with psychiatric pathology In the field of dermatological infections, treatment must be provided by both the dermatologist and psychiatrist. The skin is an interface, attacked by external factors, as well as expressing psychic conflicts. In this context, there is a real place for psychodermatology.

Affective neuroscience addresses the brain mechanisms underlying emotional behaviour. In psychiatry, affective neuroscience finds application not only in understanding the neurobiology of mood disorders, but also by providing a framework for understanding the neural control of interpersonal and social behaviour and processes that underlie psychopathology. By providing a coherent conceptual framework, affective neuroscience is increasingly able to provide a mechanistic explanatory understanding of current therapies and is driving the development of novel therapeutic approaches.

Sleep is an active state that is critical for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Sleep is also important for optimal cognitive functioning, and sleep disruption results in functional impairment. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in psychiatry. At any given time, 50% of adults are affected with 1 or more sleep problems such as difficulty in falling or staying asleep, in staying awake, or in adhering to a consistent sleep/wake schedule. Narcolepsy affects as many individuals as does multiple sclerosis or Parkinson disease. Sleep problems are especially prevalent in schizoph

The introduction of neuroimaging techniques in the 1960s has revolutionized the study of the biology of psychiatric disorders with implications for psychiatric practice. These comprise structural (computerized axial tomography, magnetic resonance imaging) and functional (including neurochemical/neuropharmacological techniques such as single-photon emission computerized tomography, positron emission tomography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy) techniques. As a result, we now have a better understanding of the morbid anatomy, pathophysiology, and chemic

In spite of its origins deeply rooted in the discipline, pharmaco-EEG applications in psychiatry remain limited to its achievements in the field of psychotropic drugs classification and, in few instances, discovery. In the present paper two attempts to transfer pharmaco-EEG methods to psychiatric clinical routine will be described: 1) monitoring of psychotropic drug toxicity at the central nervous system level, and 2) prediction of clinical response to treatment with psychotropic drugs. Both applications have been the object of several investigations providing promising and sometimes consisten
