Assessing component language deficits in the early detection of reading difficulty risk.

This article focuses on some of the linguistic components that underlie letter-sound decoding skills and reading comprehension: specifically phonology, morphology, and syntax. Many children who have reading difficulties had language deficits that were detectable before they began reading. Early identification of language difficulties will therefore help identify children at risk of reading failure. Using a developmental psycholinguistic framework, the authors provide a model of how syntax, morphology, and phonology break down in children with language impairments. The article reports on a scre

Revisiting bilingual processing: insights from L1 transfer in L2 acquisition.

MacWhinney's (1992) Competition Model proposes that L2 learners do not start from scratch but instead build on pre-existing L1 phonological, lexical, and syntactic representations. This approach eases the learning process yet leaves enduring traces from L1 transfer in the bilinguals' L2 lexicon, which may influence adult language processing. In this paper, we review psycholinguistic findings on bilingual comprehension and production and propose that many effects traditionally seen as evidence of on-line cross-language activation might instead reflect the long-term impact of L1 transfer during

Adverse Effect-Related Language in Recreational Psychedelic and non-Psychedelic Substance Experience Reports.

OBJECTIVE: In recent decades, psychedelic substances like LSD and psilocybin have been increasingly researched, but relatively few studies examined their adverse effects in recreational settings. As online substance experience reports may offer relevant information, we conducted a psycholinguistic (i.e., inferring psychologically relevant outcomes from natural language) assessment of popular psychedelic and related substances' adverse effects. METHOD: We applied latent semantic analysis to 4226 online substance experience reports, calculating each report's respective semantic similarity with

Contextualized sensorimotor norms: Multi-dimensional measures of sensorimotor strength for ambiguous English words, in context.

Embodied theories of language emphasize the role of sensorimotor experience in linguistic knowledge. Central to testing these theories is the creation of large datasets of linguistic norms, which contain judgments about a word's sensorimotor associations and can be used to predict human behavioral or brain data - sometimes in contrast to competing variables, such as those derived from distributional language models. Yet many of these datasets contain judgments about words in isolation, despite the fact that most words are ambiguous, making it difficult to determine which meaning of a word is c

The visome: Using cognitive networks to examine lip-reading errors in English words.

Network science was used to examine how English words look rather than sound when spoken. Measures of the visome (network of visual word representations) were compared to a phonological network at the macro- (whole network), meso- (subsets of nodes), and micro-levels (individual nodes) to determine how the structure of the visome influences lipreading performance. Conventional psycholinguistic measures and network structure measures were further examined in two databases of lipreading errors. Lipreading errors were higher in frequency of occurrence than the target words. Target words had uniqu

Causation, meaning, and communication.

The words we use to describe what happened shape what comes to a listener's mind. How do speakers choose what causal expressions to use? How does that choice impact what listeners imagine? In this article, we develop a computational model of how people use the causal expressions "caused," "enabled," "affected," and "made no difference." The model first builds a causal representation of what happened. By running counterfactual simulations, the model computes several causal aspects that capture the different ways in which a candidate cause made a difference to the outcome. Logical combinations o

ENIGMA: A Web Application for Running Online Artificial Grammar Learning Experiments.

Artificial grammar learning (AGL) is an experimental paradigm frequently adopted to investigate the unconscious and conscious learning and application of linguistic knowledge. This paper will introduce ENIGMA ( https://enigma-lang.org ) as a free, flexible, and lightweight Web-based tool for running online AGL experiments. The application is optimized for desktop and mobile devices with a user-friendly interface, which can present visual and aural stimuli and elicit judgment responses with RT measures. Without limits in time and space, ENIGMA could help collect more data from participants with

Grounding as a Side-Effect of Grounding.

In relation to semantics, "grounding" has (at least) two relevant meanings. "Symbol grounding" is the process of connecting symbols (e.g., words) to perception and the world. "Communicative grounding" is the process of interactively adding to common ground in dialog. Strategies for grounding in human communication include, crucially, strategies for resolving troubles caused by various kinds of miscommunication. As it happens, these two processes of grounding are closely related. As a side-effect of grounding an utterance, dialog participants (DPs) may adjust the meanings they assign to linguis

Is Syntax Semantically Constrained? Evidence From a Grammaticality Judgment Study of Indonesian.

A central debate in the cognitive sciences surrounds the nature of adult speakers' linguistic representations: Are they purely syntactic (a traditional and widely held view; e.g., Branigan & Pickering, ), or are they semantically structured? A recent study (Ambridge, Bidgood, Pine, Rowland, & Freudenthal, ) found support for the latter view, showing that adults' acceptability judgments of passive sentences were significantly predicted by independent semantic "affectedness" ratings designed to capture the putative semantics of the construction (e.g., Bob was pushed by Wendy is rated as more acc

Developmental apraxia of speech: III. A subtype marked by inappropriate stress.

Two prior studies in this series (Shriberg, Aram, & Kwiatkowski, 1997a, 1997b) address the premise that children with developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) can be differentiated from children with speech delay (SD) on the basis of one or more reliable differences in their speech. The first study compared segmental and prosody-voice profiles of a group of 14 children with suspected DAS to profiles of 73 children with SD. Results suggest that the only linguistic domain that differentiates some children with suspected DAS from those with SD is inappropriate stress. The second study cross-validate

Apraxia of speech: concepts and controversies.

PURPOSE: This article was written as an editorial to a collection of original articles on apraxia of speech (AOS) in which some of the more recent advancements in the understanding of this syndrome are discussed. It covers controversial issues concerning the theoretical foundations of AOS. Our approach was motivated by a change of perspective on motor speech that has taken place in neurobiology, neurolinguistics, phonology, and phonetics during the past few decades. METHOD: The literature on AOS is reviewed from 3 different but overlapping perspectives-that is, a disconnection, a motor memory

Morphology, language and the brain: the decompositional substrate for language comprehension.

This paper outlines a neurocognitive approach to human language, focusing on inflectional morphology and grammatical function in English. Taking as a starting point the selective deficits for regular inflectional morphology of a group of non-fluent patients with left hemisphere damage, we argue for a core decompositional network linking left inferior frontal cortex with superior and middle temporal cortex, connected via the arcuate fasciculus. This network handles the processing of regularly inflected words (such as joined or treats), which are argued not to be stored as whole forms and which

Memory-Based or Experience-Based? Subject-Object Asymmetry in Mandarin Relative Clause Processing from the Aging Perspective.

The processing difficulty of subject relative clauses (SRCs) and object relative clauses (ORCs) in Mandarin Chinese has been a controversial issue in psycholinguistics. Memory-based accounts and experience-based accounts make contrastive predictions regarding the processing asymmetry. Given that older adults tend to have lower memory and richer language experience, the processing of relative clauses in older adults can reveal which theoretical account offers a more adequate explanation of sentence comprehension. The present study compared the processing of Mandarin SRCs and ORCs in older and y

When accessibility distinctions matter or don't: Divergent patterns of offline and online cataphora resolution.

This study investigates how cataphoric pronouns are resolved in Korean, offering new insights into the cognitive mechanisms behind referential interpretation. Using both offline (questionnaire) and online (eye-tracking) methods, we examine whether mental accessibility-based constraints consistently influence pronoun resolution across processing modes. Offline results align with Accessibility Theory (Ariel, 2001): while both null (pro) and overt pronouns show a subject antecedent preference, the bias is stronger for pro, and overt pronouns display more flexibility toward object antecedents. How

MINERVA OPS: A computational framework for the representation and recognition of orthographic, phonological, and semantic associates.

Remembering is constructive. Thus, a complete account of memory must predict patterns in both veridical and false recognition. Ideally, that account will predict the content of what people falsely remember, not just that they falsely remember. To move towards that goal, we need theories of both representation and retrieval as well as an account that joins those two accounts into a cohesive whole. To work towards that goal, Reid and Jamieson Journal of Memory and Language, 129, 104397, (2023) previously modelled false recognition in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm by importing vectors tha

Domain-general categorisation explains constrained cross-linguistic variation in noun classification.

Languages appear limited in the range of concepts that are grammatically encoded. For example, person, number, and animacy distinctions are regularly found in e.g., grammatical agreement systems. But, despite their visual salience, colour distinctions are completely absent from such systems. Some have taken this to indicate domain-specific constraints on what can and cannot be part of grammars. Here, we test an alternative possibility, that domain-general cognitive capacities can explain these regularities. Using animacy- and colour-based agreement as our test cases, we show that a bias for an

A Case Study of Negative Affixes in Sadegh Hedayat's Letters: The Effect of Bipolar Mood Disorder.

This research studies the morphological features found in Sadegh Hedayat's letters, who, based on linguistic and psychological studies, may have had bipolar disorder. It aims to assess the impact of various types of moods on the frequency of negative affixes through qualitative analysis of the letters' text. The letters are written in Persian, and include six negative derivational affixes. As bipolar disorder includes four episodes, all letters are analyzed on the basis of six negative affixes concerning the episodes using SPSS. The results indicate that each episode shows totally different ch
