Exploring the relation between posttraumatic stress disorder and interpersonal outcomes: The role of social acknowledgment and trauma type.

OBJECTIVES: Research demonstrates consistent relations between posttrauma symptoms and interpersonal dysfunction. The current study examined the extent to which perceptions of community rejection account for the relation between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and interpersonal outcomes in students exposed to assaultive and nonassaultive trauma. METHOD: Participants (N = 137; 66.4% female; M = 20 years) completed a trauma history interview, questionnaires assessing symptom severity, social disapproval, and interpersonal outcomes. RESULTS: Assault survivors (n = 83) reported greater symp

Emotional reactivity to social rejection versus a frustration induction among persons with borderline personality features.

This laboratory study examined the emotional reactivity of persons with heightened borderline personality (BP) features to a social rejection stressor. Participants with high levels of BP features (n = 43) and controls with low levels of BP features (n = 67) were randomly assigned to a condition involving negative evaluation and social rejection based on personal characteristics, or to a condition involving a frustrating arithmetic task and negative evaluation based on performance. Hypotheses were that the high-BP individuals would demonstrate greater increases in negative emotions, shame, and

Comparing Responses to Sexual Rejection and Sexual and Relationship Well-Being in Couples Coping with Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder and Community Couples.

Four distinct partner responses to sexual rejection - sexual advances that are declined by a partner - have been identified. This study assessed the frequency of these responses between and within North American couples coping with Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder (SIAD) and community couples and - in line with the Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Model - compared the associations between responses to sexual rejection and sexual and relationship well-being across the two samples. Individuals with SIAD and their partners (n = 241) and community couples (n = 105) completed online measures of sex

A cross-cultural study of the attitudes of mental health professionals towards auditory hallucinations.

The usefulness of psychological interventions for auditory hallucinations is becoming increasingly accepted in Western cultures, but there are few data concerning the views of professionals working in non-Western societies. In this study, 195 psychologists and psychiatrists working in Saudi Arabia (SA) and Britain (UK) responded to a questionnaire regarding their (a) attitudes towards various clinical aspects of auditory hallucinations, (b) perceptions of the clinical value of psychological and pharmacological treatments and of the inputs of the two professions and (c) levels of social distanc

Distinct neurocognitive pathways underlying the effects of ostracism and social rejection on visual perspective-taking.

Social exclusion, including ostracism (being ignored) and social rejection (direct negative feedback), exerts different effects on visual perspective-taking (VPT). However, existing theories and empirical studies have failed to adequately explain these differences, with the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms remaining unclear. This study compared the behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) effects of ostracism (Cyberball game) and social rejection (modified get-acquainted paradigm) on VPT, quantifying three ERP components: fronto-central N200, centro-parietal P300 and temporo-parietal L

The incremental validity of level of personality functioning over borderline personality features in associations with early adolescent social reward processing.

More work is needed to establish the validity of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Acceptance of the AMPD as the primary model of personality disorder requires identifying neurocognitive validators of AMPD-defined personality functioning and demonstrating superiority of the AMPD over the traditional categorical model of personality disorder. It is also important to establish the utility of the AMPD in a developmental context given evidence that personality disorder emerges in adolescence. We assessed the

Examining the causal effects of social exclusion on shame and dissociative detachment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dissociative detachment experiences (e.g., derealization, absorption) underpin much psychopathology and are often researched in relation to co-occurring affective states such as shame, the latter being known to occur in situations involving actual or perceived negative social evaluation. The association between shame and dissociative detachment may also be moderated by individual differences in people's need to belong. The goal of the present study was to experimentally investigate the effects of social exclusion on shame and dissociative detachment depending on perc

The predictive value of the early maladaptive schemas in social situations in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) show an impairment in the recognition and expression of emotions, as well as an increased sensitivity to being socially excluded, and rigid maladaptive schemas. The Cyberball paradigm is a virtual ball-toss game that can simulate social exclusion and inclusion. Our aim is to evaluate how cognitive schemas can influence the perception and the evaluation of the experiences of social inclusion/exclusion. METHODS: Thirty-two AN patients and 34 healthy controls completed a psychological evaluation and were randomly assigned to exclusion or overinclus

On the clinical psychologist's role in the time of COVID-19, with particular reference to experience gained in pediatric oncology.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic seems to be developing into a planetary-scale mental health experiment, undermining the foundations of our being human, obliging us to keep physically apart from one another, and inducing us to see other people as a potential threat. METHODS: In the world of pediatric oncology, we have found ourselves up against new challenges. In this article, we discuss the difficulties found in conducting psychological support sessions while complying with physical distancing rules, as well as wearing protective face masks, and even gloves; or while using modern remote comm

Social anxiety is associated with poorer peer functioning for girls but not boys with ADHD.

There is mixed evidence for whether or not co-occurring anxiety is associated with poorer peer functioning in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which may be partly due to studies typically using a global measure of anxiety and failing to consider possible sex differences. The present study examined child-reported social anxiety in relation to peer functioning and whether this association differs by sex in 93 children (66% male; ages 8-12) with ADHD. Children, parents, and teachers completed a measure of social acceptance, and teachers also completed measures of aso

Benefits of belonging: experimental manipulation of social inclusion to enhance psychological and physiological health parameters.

OBJECTIVE: Acute changes in social belonging are important triggers for alterations in health and well-being, yet research has emphasised the negative effects of 'exclusion' at the expense of evaluating the potentially positive effects of 'inclusion'. This study examined the impact of acute belonging on physiological and psychological outcomes. DESIGN AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A healthy population (N = 138) were randomly allocated to 'included' or 'excluded' conditions. Condition-dependent differences in pre/during-task heart rate and pre/post-task self-reports of negative/positive mood, and

Cognitive reappraisal in trauma-exposed women with borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional dysregulation and a high prevalence of traumatic stress. Recent estimates suggest that 2-6% of non-clinical populations suffer from BPD. Despite this relevance, this is the first study considering the neural mechanisms underlying trauma-history and temporal features of cognitive reappraisal in non-clinical BPD patients using script-driven stimuli. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined subjective ratings of negative emotional experience and brain activity following up- and down-regulation of emotional

Hiding anxiety versus acknowledgment of anxiety in social interaction: relationship with social anxiety.

According to cognitive and interpersonal models, safety behaviors in social phobia (e.g., avoiding eye contact, hiding blushing) erroneously induce negative evaluation by interaction partners. Presumably, a bias about the social outcome of safety behaviors causes this negative interaction cycle. Such a bias might be subject to double standard in social phobia (i.e., having more stringent rules for oneself than for others). Female students (n=81) predicted more negative social outcomes for a prominent type of safety behavior, hiding anxiety, than for the opposite behavior, acknowledgment of anx

Liberatory pedagogy and special education.

Liberatory theory, related to critical theory, postmodern thought, and constructivism, forms the backdrop of this article, which suggests that the way in which we have conceptualized students with disabilities as the "other" has come from a distorted modernist view that encourages us to distance ourselves from one another. It is suggested that some of our most vehement debates in special education are indicative of our attempts to "nibble at the edges of postmodern thinking." Liberatory pedagogies developed throughout the world have used education as a means for oppressed peoples to define for

Hostile Cognitions and Aggressive Responses Toward Excluders in Young Children.

Social exclusion heightens hostile cognition and aggressive responses toward excluders. However, its direct causal effects and relationship with self-construal are unclear in early childhood. This study experimentally investigated the effects of social exclusion on later hostile cognition and aggressive responses toward excluders (vs. includers) in Japanese 5- to 6-year-old preschoolers (N = 35; Mage = 70.51 months; 18 females) and explored the role of caregivers' independent selves on those children's responses. The results showed that regardless of the caregivers' independent selves, exclusi

Social distance towards halitosis sufferers.

Halitosis is a frustrating condition that can lead to significant discomforts, negative social and psychological effects including social interaction suppression and self-confidence diminution. The purpose of the study was to assess the social distance attitude towards halitosis sufferers in Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey was carried out among young adult Nigerians recruited from University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, as part of a larger-scale halitosis-relational survey. Information obtained were age, gender and social distance attitude. The social distance attitude was measured with th

A session-by-session analysis of psychological and external workload demands prior to muscle-tendon injuries in Brazilian professional soccer players: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the psychological demands and external workload experienced in the seven sessions leading up to injuries and the demands in the month preceding the injury week among professional Brazilian soccer players. METHODS: Initially, 33 players participated, but only 15 were included in the analysis due to the occurrence of 23 muscle-tendon injuries recorded according to International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines. The study assessed muscle-tendon injuries, rate of perceived exertion (RPE), and psychological variables (i.e. mental load, motivation, and ment

Love and fear of heights: the pathophysiology and psychology of height imbalance.

Individual psychological responses to heights vary on a continuum from acrophobia to height intolerance, height tolerance, and height enjoyment. This paper reviews the English literature and summarizes the physiologic and psychological factors that generate different responses to heights while standing still in a static or motionless environment. Perceptual cues to height arise from vision. Normal postural sway of 2 cm for peripheral objects within 3 m increases as eye-object distance increases. Postural sway >10 cm can result in a fall. A minimum of 20 minutes of peripheral retinal arc is req

How Does Parental Rejection Affect College Students' Bullying across Genders? The Mediating Roles of Rejection Sensitivity and Hostility.

Bullying, including traditional and cyber bullying, is a serious public health issue associated with a range of negative effects on individual development. Grounded in the parental acceptance-rejection theory, parental rejection is a significant and positive predictor of bullying. However, limited research has explored the unique associations and underlying mechanisms between parental rejection and college students' bullying (traditional and cyber bullying). The current study investigated the associations between parental rejection and college students' bullying, as well as the roles of reject
