Racial and ethnic disparities in psychological care for individuals with FASD: a dis/ability studies and critical race theory perspective toward improving prevention, assessment/diagnosis, and intervention.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are among the most common neurodevelopmental disorders and substantially impact public health. FASD can affect people of all races and ethnicities; however, there are important racial and ethnic disparities in alcohol-exposed pregnancy prevention, assessment and diagnosis of FASD, and interventions to support individuals with FASD and their families. In this article we use the Dis/Ability Studies and Critical Race Theory (Dis/Crit) framework to structure the exploration of disparities and possible solutions within these three areas (prevention, diagnosis

Coping with COVID-19: Survey data assessing psychological distress to COVID-19 and vaccine hesitancy with measures of theory of planned behavior, mindfulness, compassion, cultural orientation, and pandemic fatigue.

As the COVID-19 pandemic extends into another year, the causes and consequences of pandemic fatigue and vaccine hesitancy have become prominent concerns. This dataset contains MTurk survey responses from 658 vaccinated USA samples indicating: (a) pandemic fatigue and psychological distress (physical and trauma symptoms); (b) delays in receiving medical care due to COVID-19 restrictions; (c) vaccine-related behavior and beliefs (type of vaccine and vaccine hesitancy), and (d) COVID-19 preventive health behaviors. Several predictor variables were also collected including: (a) demographic variabl

Facilitating physical activity and reducing symptoms in patients with knee osteoarthritis: study protocol of a randomized controlled trial to test a theory-based PrevOP-psychological adherence program (PrevOP-PAP).

BACKGROUND: The present randomized controlled trial, which is crossed with the "PREVenting the impairment of primary Osteoarthritis by high impact long-term Physical exercise regimen" Main Medical Trial (PrevOP-MMT), aims to evaluate a psychological adherence program (PrevOP-PAP), and is designed to support persons with knee osteoarthritis (OAK) in the uptake and maintenance of regular physical activity to reduce OAK symptoms. The PrevOP-PAP is based on the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA), a social-cognitive theory predicting health behavior change in individuals, extended here by social

Physical function, psychological adjustment, and self-efficacy following sudden cardiac arrest and an initial implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) in a social cognitive theory intervention: secondary analysis of a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) survivorship results in unique issues in return to physical and psychological function. The purpose of the study was to compare recovery across the first year between SCA survivors and other arrhythmia patients who received a first-time implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) for secondary prevention, participating in a social cognitive theory (SCT) intervention. METHODS: 168 (129 males, 39 females) who received an ICD for secondary prevention (SCA N = 65; other arrhythmia N = 103) were randomized to one of two study conditions: SCT intervention (N

Effects of home disease management strategies based on the dyadic illness management theory on elderly patients with chronic heart failure and informal caregivers' physical and psychological outcomes: protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Currently, most elderly chronic heart failure (CHF) patients go home for rehabilitation after certain treatment in hospitals. However, the results of their rehabilitation at home are not satisfactory. According to studies, dyadic treatments can increase the efficiency of home rehabilitation, enhance both partners' quality of life, lessen the caregiver's load of care, and alleviate the strain of medical resources. Thus, the aim of our research is to design a study protocol that included elderly CHF patients and their informal caregivers as an intervention unit and to explore the imp

Predictors of return to work and psychological well-being among women during/after long-term sick leave due to common mental disorders - a prospective cohort study based on the theory of planned behaviour.

Common mental disorders are associated with long-term sick leave, especially among women. There is a lack of theory-based research regarding the impact of personal factors on return to work and psychological well-being. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine whether return-to-work beliefs and perceived health were predictors of return to work and psychological well-being among women during or after long-term sick leave for common mental disorders, based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour. This was a prospective cohort study with a 1-year follow-up. At baseline, women (n = 282) had bee

Epoché and Protoexistence: Toward a Genetic Phenomenology of Experiential Emergence.

This theoretical-conceptual essay reconsiders epoché in qualitative phenomenological research and its relation to experiential emergence. Rather than a one-time technique of bracketing, epoché is conceptualized as a sustained discipline of epistemic suspension, attentional reorientation, and phenomenological restraint. On this basis, protoexistence is reformulated as a heuristic for incomplete experiential stabilization rather than as a pre-subjective, pre-intentional, or pre-temporal domain. It refers to configurations in which intentionality, self-relatedness, embodiment, affectivity, and te

How much is left for the theory-theory to explain?

Jara-Ettinger and Dunham treat the "mentalistic stance" as theory-theory, leaving the institutional stance vulnerable to a familiar reply: the tacit theory can be context-tuned to fit the surprise cases. I argue that the institutional stance is best motivated by pairing it with simulation-based mindreading and scripts, which together reduce theory-theory's distinctive explanatory role and preserve the authors' appeal to computational economy.

To Be FAIR: Theory Specification Needs an Update.

Open science innovations have focused on rigorous theory testing, yet methods for specifying, sharing, and iteratively improving theories remain underdeveloped. To address this limitation, we introduce FAIR theory, a standard for specifying theories as findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable digital objects. FAIR theories are findable in well-established archives; accessible in terms of their availability and ability to be understood; interoperable for specific purposes, such as selecting control variables; and reusable in that they can be iteratively and collaboratively improved on.

The concept of dissociation.

The concept of dissociation has been reviewed and redefined. It was also compared with other mental mechanisms. In the past, the process of dissociation and the content of the dissociation have often been lumped together although they are separate frames of reference. Moreover, very different psychic elements may be dissociated including memories, affects, and psychic structure. Dissociation is an important mental mechanism that plays a very significant role in people's adaptational efforts. In addition, dissociation is the underlying mechanism in a number of defense mechanisms. Repression, in

Nuancing psychological research with complexity: The case of embodied cognition and ecological dynamics.

Psychological science is often hampered by the fact that mind and behavior are exceedingly complex subjects. There are many moving parts, and many interactions between these, which elicits a categorical shift in the nature of its variables. This demands a strong theoretic and meta-theoretic foundation to order and interpret results. Yet, especially the meta-theoretic foundation has been unduly neglected. To remediate this, the current paper invites to scrutinize the assumptions about the nature of the world implicit in theories, called metaphysics. We position complexity science as delivering

Bet on functionalism.

I argue that there is currently no alternative to functionalism. Functionalism explains the differences between types of mental states. No biological theory does. Functionalist theories account for the differences between conscious and unconscious states. No biological theory does. So, as things stand we should bet on functionalism.

What is behind the priority heuristic? A mathematical analysis and comment on Brandstätter, Gigerenzer, and Hertwig (2006).

Comments on the article by E. Brandstätter, G. Gigerenzer, and R. Hertwig. The authors discuss the priority heuristic, a recent model for decisions under risk. They reanalyze the experimental validity of this approach and discuss how these results compare with cumulative prospect theory, the currently most established model in behavioral economics. They also discuss how general models for decisions under risk based on a heuristic approach can be understood mathematically to gain some insight in their limitations. They finally consider whether the priority heuristic model can lead to some under

An evidence-based causal model of panic disorder.

Recently, Fava and Morton (2009) described what they termed a 'causal model' of panic disorder (Causal modeling of panic disorder theories, Clinical Psychology Review, 29, 623-637). We examined several critical tenets of this proposed model, and offer significant revisions. Our revised causal model includes elements that have received empirical support, and exclude those with known limitations in explaining the etiology and treatment of panic disorder. Chief among these revisions are (1) an increased emphasis on anxiety sensitivity, (2) elimination of the more general psychodynamic conceptuali

The Soul, as an Uninhibited Mental Activity, is Reduced into Consciousness by Rules of Quantum Physics.

This paper is an effort to describe, in neuroscientific terms, one of the most ambiguous concepts of the universe-the soul. Previous efforts to understand what the soul is and where it may exist have accepted the soul as a subjective and individual entity. We will make two additions to this view: (1) The soul is a result of uninhibited mental activity and lacks spatial and temporal information; (2) The soul is an undivided whole and, to become divided, the soul has to be reduced into unconscious and conscious mental events. This reduction process parallels the maturation of the frontal cortex
