Transformational Clinical Matrix-Expanded: Metatheoretical Framework for Conceptualizing Dysfunctional Processes and Psychopathology.

Complex psychopathology, particularly when associated with adverse developmental experiences and complex trauma, involves multiple cognitive, affective, behavioral, interpersonal, and neurobiological processes that may be difficult to organize within single-theoretical or symptom-based models. The present paper introduces the Transformational Clinical Matrix-Expanded (TCM-XP), a transdiagnostic and metatheoretical framework developed to organize these processes within a developmental and integrative perspective. The TCM-XP comprises seven interrelated domains: Adverse and Dysfunctional Experie

An integrated clinical approach to children at genetic risk for neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions: interdisciplinary collaboration and research infrastructure.

BACKGROUND: A sizeable proportion of pathogenic genetic variants identified in young children tested for congenital differences are associated with neurodevelopmental psychiatric disorders (NPD). In this growing group, a genetic diagnosis often precedes the emergence of diagnosable developmental concerns. Here, we describe DAGSY (Developmental Assessment of Genetically Susceptible Youth), a novel interdisciplinary 'genetic-diagnosis-first' clinic integrating psychiatric, psychological and genetic expertise, and report our first observations and feedback from families and referring clinicians.

Fragile X Syndrome: A Review for General Pediatricians.

Fragile X syndrome is the most commonly inherited form of intellectual disability. Identifying fragile X syndrome at a young age can be quite challenging because the classical physical features usually present in late childhood or early adolescence; therefore, it is important to consider genetic testing for all males with unexplained developmental delays, intellectual disability, and autism, females with developmental delays, intellectual disability or autism, and a family history of fragile X gene disorders. There is no specific treatment to manage fragile X syndrome. Still, a prompt referral

A pupillometric study of developmental and individual differences in cognitive effort in visual word recognition.

Throughout the history of modern psychology, the neural basis of cognitive performance, and particularly its efficiency, has been assumed to be an essential determinant of developmental and individual differences in a wide range of human behaviors. Here, we examine one aspect of cognitive efficiency-cognitive effort, using pupillometry to examine differences in word reading among adults (N = 34) and children (N = 34). The developmental analyses confirmed that children invested more effort in reading than adults, as indicated by larger and sustained pupillary responses. The within-age (individu

Looking at eye gaze processing and its neural correlates in infancy-implications for social development and autism spectrum disorder.

The importance of eye gaze as a means of communication is indisputable. However, there is debate about whether there is a dedicated neural module, which functions as an eye gaze detector and when infants are able to use eye gaze cues in a referential way. The application of neuroscience methodologies to developmental psychology has provided new insights into early social cognitive development. This review integrates findings on the development of eye gaze processing with research on the neural mechanisms underlying infant and adult social cognition. This research shows how a cognitive neurosci

How the gaze of others influences object processing.

An aspect of gaze processing, which so far has been given little attention, is the influence that intentional gaze processing can have on object processing. Converging evidence from behavioural neuroscience and developmental psychology strongly suggests that objects falling under the gaze of others acquire properties that they would not display if not looked at. Specifically, observing another person gazing at an object enriches that object of motor, affective and status properties that go beyond its chemical or physical structure. A conceptual analysis of available evidence leads to the concl

Criteria of facial attractiveness in five populations.

The theory of sexual selection suggests several possible explanations for the development of standards of physical attractiveness in humans. Asymmetry and departures from average proportions may be markers of the breakdown of developmental stability. Supernormal traits may present age- and sex-typical features in exaggerated form. Evidence from social psychology suggests that both average proportions and (in females) "neotenous" facial traits are indeed more attractive. Using facial photographs from three populations (United States, Brazil, Paraguayan Indians), rated by members of the same thr

Ego development and self-image complexity in early adolescence. Longitudinal studies of psychiatric and diabetic patients.

Ego development and multiple self-images were studied in nonpsychotic psychiatric patients, diabetic patients, and healthy high school students. The results reported are drawn from the first year of a four-year longitudinal project investigating the psychosocial development and family interactions of impaired and at-risk adolescents. Both groups of patients, especially the psychiatric group, were significantly lower in their ego development and showed less self-image complexity than the high school students. These findings are discussed both in terms of understanding developmental deviation in

"Life Starts for Me Again." The Social Impact of Psychology on Programs for Homeless People: Solidarity Networks for the Effectiveness of Interventions.

The role of psychology in the improvement of people's lives is consistent, according to the scientific literature review. More and more studies within psychology, and other social sciences, are pointing out the importance of the quality of social interactions on physical and mental health and upon perceived wellbeing. When talking about homelessness, psychology has served these individuals mostly by informing intervention programs related to preventing and responding to substance abuse, healthcare, sexual risks, or mental illnesses, and these are key problems that psychology has also studied a

Commentary: Global perspectives on resilience and callous-unemotional traits - a reflection on Obando et al. (2022).

Obando, Wright and Hill's (Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2022) study of young children exposed to community violence in Colombia is a most welcome addition to the literature on risk and protective pathways related to callous and unemotional (CU) traits. The key contributions of this study can be viewed in light of calls for a new wave of global research into resilience in children and youth. These contributions also highlight the need for further research into CU traits in diverse sociocultural contexts, and in particular, research addressing questions concerning (a) multiple pat

Pediatric pain management.

It is now recognized that from the newborn period onwards, children are capable of experiencing pain. This includes the premature infant. The challenge for healthcare providers is to incorporate methods of pain assessment and treatment into their daily practices. The child's understanding of pain closely follows the cognitive and behavioral model developed by Jean Piaget. Based on these developmental stages, pain assessment measures have been developed. Pharmacologic advances have accompanied this improved understanding of infant, child, and adolescent psychology. While acute pain accounts for

Validation of the parenting style survey for parents of children with mental retardation.

A validation study was performed in order to assess the content, construct, and criterion-related validities of the Parenting Style Survey, an instrument assessing parental behavior in families with a child who has mental retardation. Subjects were the primary careproviders of 29 individuals with moderate mental retardation. Data corroborating the validity of the Parenting Style Survey were derived from home visits, individuals experienced in developmental psychology, careproviders for individuals with mental retardation, and the Family Environment Scale (Moos, 1974). The Parenting Style Surve

Searching for the Pattern: Understanding, Assessing, and Transforming Social Settings.

A historical analysis of systems theory ideas from the biological and physical sciences reveals their infusion into sociology and action-oriented subfields of psychology, including social, organizational, developmental, and community psychology. Constructs and processes are identified that are useful for creating a framework to understand, assess, and transform social settings. The central theoretical concept that surfaces is the emergent pattern of dynamic transactions that communicates critical information and meaning, referred to as "social regularity." This is followed by an examination of

General Pediatrician-Staffed Behavioral/Developmental Access Clinic Decreases Time to Evaluation of Early Childhood Developmental Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate the effectiveness of a quality improvement project to decrease wait time to evaluation for children referred to Developmental Behavioral Pediatricians (DBPs). METHODS: The authors created a Behavioral/Developmental Access Clinic (BDAC) staffed by a general pediatrician (GP) and pediatric psychologist. Clinicians in the BDAC provided comprehensive developmental evaluations for children in a discrete age range (<5 yr old). We describe the establishment of the BDAC along with referrals, diagnoses, and recommended follow-up for patients seen by the GP. We used

Paranoia and narcissism in psychoanalytic theory. Contributions of self psychology to the theory and therapy of the paranoid disorders.

Many factors go into a choice of a therapeutic focus: the patient's psychopathology; the therapist's training, countertransference reactions, and ideological beliefs; and, importantly, a decision about what seems most amenable to treatment and change. As a theory, self psychology describes one aspect of the paranoid process; as such, it is an incomplete theory that complements rather than invalidates more classical theories. As a technique, however, it suggests a style and focus conducive to working with paranoid patients, one that is markedly supportive, nonconfrontational, yet also interpret

Development of a core confidence-higher order construct.

The author develops core confidence as a higher order construct and suggests that a core confidence-higher order construct--not addressed by extant work motivation theories--is helpful in better understanding employee motivation in today's rapidly changing organizations. Drawing from psychology (social, clinical, and developmental) and social anthropology, the author develops propositions regarding the relationships between core confidence and performance, attitudes, and subjective well-being. The core confidence-higher order construct is proposed to be manifested by hope, self-efficacy, optim

Neurobiology and neurodevelopmental impact of childhood traumatic stress and prenatal alcohol exposure.

PURPOSE: Research reveals that prenatal alcohol exposure and child trauma (i.e., abuse, neglect, sexual abuse) can have deleterious effects on child development across multiple domains. This study analyzed the impact on childhood neurodevelopment of prenatal alcohol exposure and postnatal traumatic experience compared to postnatal traumatic experience alone. Although the harmful effects of both have been well documented individually, there is no research documenting the concurrent effects of prenatal alcohol exposure and postnatal trauma on a child's developmental process. METHOD: Transdiscip

The routine "well child" examination: a study of its value in the discovery of significant psychological problems.

The practice of well child care by pediatricians has been a subject of increasing controversy. Previous reports in the literature have indicated a low yield of significant organic or psychological findings. In the present study, three post-residency pediatricians, working in the general pediatric unit of an HMO setting at different times, evaluated the developmental and psychological problems of patients seen in consecutive well child examinations. The nature of their problems was measured by the actual degree of intervention required of the pediatrician, rather than by standard mental health

Heterologous assisted reproduction and kernicterus: the unlucky coincidence reveals an ethical dilemma.

Secrecy and anonymity related to heterologous assisted reproduction may hide basic newborn data to neonatologists. Secrecy and anonymity are discussed in view of their possible consequences on relational dynamics and on developmental psychology. Nevertheless, they can also involve the offspring's genetic status regarding inheritable diseases. International guidelines have been recently published on this topic. Because no guidelines are 'ideal' unfortunate and possibly dramatic consequences can occur. We aimed to embark on a debate about this matter starting with a real clinical experience. In
