Review of Selected 2-Phenylethylamine Derivatives and Opioids, Systematic Review of Their Effects on Psychomotor Abilities and Driving Performance: Psychopharmacology in the Context of Road Safety.

Background: Driving is a coordinated psychomotor activity that involves reaction time, attention, and decision-making. Psychoactive substances such as 2-phenylethylamine (PEA) derivatives and opioids may affect these functions and contribute to traffic safety. This systematic review revealed the effects of the selected PEA derivatives and opioids on psychomotor performance among drivers and potential road safety outcomes. Methods: The review followed PRISMA 2020 standards. Using the PICO method, we conducted a systematic search in Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science (2000-2025). Included studie

Relationships between mood states and performances in reaction time, psychomotor ability, and mental efficiency during a 31-day gradual decompression in a hypobaric chamber from sea level to 8848 m equivalent altitude.

High altitude is characterized by hypoxic environmental conditions that may induce a set of pathological disorders, known as acute mountain sickness. In addition to the physiological symptoms, exposure to high altitude may also produce adverse changes in motor skills, mental efficiency, and mood states, including anxiety. In the present study, we investigated the relationships between mood states, including anxiety, and performance changes in reaction time, psychomotor ability and mental efficiency in eight climbers participating in the 'Everest-Comex 97', a 31-day gradual decompression in a h

Isolation of Distinct Networks Driving Action and Cognition in Psychomotor Processes.

BACKGROUND: Psychomotor disturbances are observed across psychiatric disorders and often manifest as psychomotor slowing, agitation, disorganized behavior, or catatonia. Psychomotor function includes both cognitive and motor components, but the neural circuits driving these subprocesses and how they relate to symptoms have remained elusive for centuries. METHODS: We analyzed data from the HCP-EP (Human Connectome Project for Early Psychosis), a multisite study of 125 participants with early psychosis and 58 healthy participants with resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and clin

Beyond the Classroom: Investigating the Relationship between Psychomotor Development and Academic Achievement in 4-12-Year-Olds.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The relevance of psychomotor skills in children's growth is being increasingly recognized. The transversal role of psychomotor skills in learning performance is described through a link between cognitive and motor functioning, promoting socio-affective-expressive competencies, but there is a scarcity of evidence from the field. A two-fold goal was defined: to investigate the relationship between psychomotor functions and academic performance and to examine the factors affecting children's academic performance. METHODS: The Portuguese versions of the Neuropsychomotor Fun

The Behavioral Mapping of Psychomotor Slowing in Psychosis Demonstrates Heterogeneity Among Patients Suggesting Distinct Pathobiology.

OBJECTIVES: Psychomotor slowing (PS) occurs in up to half of schizophrenia patients and is linked to poorer outcomes. As standard treatment fails to improve PS, novel approaches are needed. Here, we applied the RDoC framework using 3 units of analysis, ie, behavior, self-report, and physiology to test, whether patients with PS are different from patients without PS and controls. METHODS: Motor behavior was compared between 71 schizophrenia patients with PS, 25 without PS, and 42 healthy controls (HC) using 5 different measures: (1) for behavior, an expert rating scale: Motor score of the Salp

Reach Corrections Toward Moving Objects are Faster Than Reach Corrections Toward Instantaneously Switching Targets.

Visually guided reaching is a common motor behavior that engages subcortical circuits to mediate rapid corrections. Although these neural mechanisms have evolved for interacting with the physical world, they are often studied in the context of reaching toward virtual targets on a screen. These targets often change position by disappearing from one place reappearing in another instantaneously. In this study, we instructed participants to perform rapid reaches to physical objects that changed position in different ways. In one condition, the objects moved very rapidly from one place to another.

Task-specific tremor.

Task-specific tremor is a form of action tremor that occurs only or mainly when a person is performing a specific skilled task. The most frequently encountered form of task-specific tremor is primary writing tremor (PWT). Currently, there is debate about whether PWT is a variant of essential tremor, writer's cramp (dystonia), a separate entity, or in some cases related to essential tremor and in others to dystonia. PWT typically occurs at a frequency of 5-7Hz and has been subdivided into to two types: Type A, task-induced tremor, and type B, positionally sensitive tremor. Temporary suppression

Psychomotor recovery in very old patients after total intravenous or balanced anaesthesia for cataract surgery.

We compared psychomotor recovery after total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) with remifentanil/propofol and balanced anaesthesia (BAL) with etomidate/fentanyl/isoflurane in 40 patients, ASA I-III, aged > or =80 yr undergoing elective cataract surgery. Recovery times were recorded and psychomotor recovery was assessed according to simple reaction time, critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF) and short-term memory 30 min, 2 h and 1 day after surgery. Physical characteristics of patients in the two groups (19 in the TIVA group and 21 in the BAL group) were comparable. The TIVA group recovered sign

Review of the impact of short-term use of alprazolam on cognitive, psychomotor, and quality-of-life impairments associated with anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders are often associated with impairments in memory, attention, decision-making, and psychomotor function, leading to a reduced quality of life (QoL). Alprazolam, commonly prescribed for acute anxiety disorders, has generated interest regarding its potential impact on anxiety-associated cognitive and psychomotor impairment, especially since effects of short-term use have not been well studied. This review summarizes clinical evidence on the short-term (up to 8 weeks) effects of alprazolam on cognitive performance, psychomotor function, and QoL outcomes in individuals with anxiety

Unique behavioral strategies in visuomotor learning: Hope for the non-learner.

The existence of individual differences in motor learning capability is well known but the behaviors or strategies that contribute to this variability have been vastly understudied. What performance characteristics distinguish an expert level performer from individuals who experience little to no success, those labeled non-learners? We designed a rule-based visuomotor task which requires identification (discovery) and then exploitation of specific explicit and implicit task components that requires a specific movement pattern, the task rule, for goal achievement. When participants first attemp

Spontaneous beta power, motor-related beta power and cortical thickness in major depressive disorder with psychomotor disturbance.

INTRODUCTION: The psychomotor disturbance is a common symptom in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The neurological mechanisms of psychomotor disturbance are intricate, involving alterations in the structure and function of motor-related regions. However, the relationship among changes in the spontaneous activity, motor-related activity, local cortical thickness, and psychomotor function remains unclear. METHOD: A total of 140 patients with MDD and 68 healthy controls performed a simple right-hand visuomotor task during magnetoencephalography (MEG) scanning. All patients were div

Combining conventional and smartphone technologies to evaluate the psychomotor status in chronic malnutrition: A cross-sectional pilot study in sub-Saharan Africa.

Malnutrition remains a pressing health concern in developing nations, contributing to growth delay (stunting) and psychomotor impairments among the youth. Tanzania has the highest prevalence of stunting, yet the psychomotor status of its population has not been previously studied. To address this gap, we gathered anthropometric, nutritional, and psychomotor data from 211 children with the aim of assessing the reliability of digital tools as indicators of psychomotor performance in relation to the nutritional status. Collected anthropometric measures included middle-upper arm circumference (MUA

Effects of task difficulty on performance and event-related bradycardia during preparation for action.

The slowing of heart rate prior to movement onset has been presented as a marker of task-related cognitive processing and linked with performance accuracy. Here we examined this event-related bradycardia and task performance as a function of task difficulty. Forty experienced golfers completed a series of golf putting conditions that manipulated task difficulty by varying target distance, target size, and surface contour. Performance was measured by the number of holed putts and finishing distance from the hole. Physiological activity was recorded throughout. Analyses confirmed that performanc

Action video game playing impacts occupational screening for high-stakes professionals.

Action video game playing has been linked with enhanced cognitive and perceptual abilities measured via a variety of basic psychological lab tests. However, much less work has examined such relations in the context of measures with direct real-world workplace relevance. Here we examined the performance of male United States military personnel on a psychomotor task battery, part of an official selection test designed to assess aptitude for military aviation. We found that action video game playing was significantly and positively associated with performance on this battery. More specifically, i

Progressive deterioration of reaction time performance and choreiform symptoms in a new Huntington's disease transgenic ratmodel.

We tested the hypothesis that a recently developed transgenic rat model of Huntington's disease (tgHD rats) showed an age-and genotype-dependent change in psychomotor performance and in the frequency of choreiform movements similar to HD patients. Wild type and tgHD (homozygotic and heterozygotic) rats were behaviorally tested at an age of 15 and 20 months. Our results show that tgHD rats exhibit an age-, and genotype-dependent deterioration of the psychomotor performance and choreiform symptoms, closely mimicking the clinical time course changes of psychomotor symptoms of HD patients. A unified account of current-future control and affordance-based control for running to catch fly balls.

Current-future control and affordance-based control offer two distinct approaches to understanding the visual guidance of action. Current-future control strategies, such as the optical acceleration cancellation strategy, are essentially error-nulling strategies. That is, the visual guidance of action is predicated on nulling the error around the critical value of some optical invariant. Whether error nulling is (still) possible, given the action capabilities of the agent, is not specified in current-future control strategies. There is no specification of affordances. Affordance-based control r
