[Features of the psychophysiological response of combatants with combat stress reactions].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the features of the psychophysiological response in servicemen with the consequences of combat stress reactions (CSR) within the research paradigm of «predictable-unpredictable threat» (PUT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 87 male servicemen. Group 1 included healthy military personnel (control group [CG], n=40), Group 2 consisted of combatants with stress-associated non-psychotic disorders (CSR group, n=47): F43.1 (38.3%), F41.2 (29.6%), F44 (19.5%), F41.1 (12.6%). The mean age of the subjects in the CG group was 23.7±2.3 years vs. 23.2±2.3 years in the CSR

Managing somatic preoccupation.

Somatically preoccupied patients are a heterogeneous group of persons who have no genuine physical disorder but manifest psychologic conflicts in a somatic fashion; who have a notable psychologic overlay that accompanies or complicates a genuine physical disorder; or who have psychophysiologic symptoms in which psychologic factors play a major role in physiologic symptoms. In the primary care setting, somatic preoccupation is far more prevalent among patients than are the psychiatric disorders collectively referred to as somatoform disorders (e.g., somatization disorder, hypochondriasis). Impaired Recognition of Facially Expressed Emotions in Different Groups of Patients with Sleep Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Recently it has been shown that acute sleep loss has a direct impact on emotional processing in healthy individuals. Here we studied the effect of chronically disturbed sleep on emotional processing by investigating two samples of patients with sleep disorders. METHODS: 25 patients with psychophysiologic insomnia (23 women and 2 men, mean age: 51.6 SD; 10.9 years), 19 patients with sleep apnea syndrome (4 women and 15 men, mean age: 51.9; SD 11.1) and a control sample of 24 subjects with normal sleep (15 women and 9 men, mean age 45.3; SD 8.8) completed a Facial Expressed Emotio

Idiopathic environmental intolerances: results of challenge studies.

It has been postulated that psychophysiologic mechanisms may account for symptom generation in IEI. In this review, the similarity of IEI and panic disorder symptoms are noted. The results of various challenge studies, both with known panicogenic substances and self-identified triggers, are examined. Available data are consistent with the premise that IEI symptoms have a psychophysiologic basis.

Perceptions and pathophysiology of dyspnea and exercise intolerance.

Dyspnea is a complex psychophysiologic sensation that requires intact afferent and efferent pathways for the full perception of the neuromechanical dissociation between the respiratory effort attempted and the work actually accomplished. The sensation is triggered or accentuated by a variety of receptors located in the chest wall, respiratory muscles, lung parenchyma, carotid body, and brain stem. The sensation of dyspnea is stronger in patients with higher scores for anxiety and has been reported in patients with anxiety disorders with no cardiopulmonary disease. These observations demonstrat

Disgust acquisition in Pavlovian conditioning: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The acquisition of disgust through Pavlovian conditioning is thought to be a crucial mechanism underlying the development of mental disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and eating disorders. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aims to enhance our understanding of disgust conditioning by examining research using psychophysiological (autonomic) and self-report measures (disgust, valence, expectancy). Furthermore, the role of characteristics of the unconditioned stimulus (UCS), i.e., modality and number of different stimuli paired with a single conditioned stimulus, was ana

Epidemiology and Comorbidities of Psychodermatologic Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Psychodermatologic conditions include primary psychodermatologic disorders (PPDs), psychological conditions manifesting with dermatologic symptoms, and psychophysiological disorders, dermatologic conditions influenced by psychological stress. Despite their clinical significance and considerable impact on quality of life, the comprehensive epidemiology and neuropsychiatric comorbidity profiles of these disorders remain limited. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence and comorbidity profiles of psychodermatologic conditions in a diverse, population-based cohort. METHODS: A nested

Personality characteristics of patients with temporomandibular disorders: diagnostic and therapeutic implications.

One hundred ten patients complaining of nondental orofacial pain of more than 3 months' duration were psychologically evaluated with the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Four distinct personality profiles were found: psychophysiologic reaction, in 52% of the patients; depressed reaction, in 11% of the patients; defensive reaction, in 12% of the patients; and "no diagnosis" (normal), in 24% of the patients. These results indicate that chronic temporomandibular pain patients present personality characteristics that are similar to those of other chronic pain patients according to the

Dementia and depression in old age: psychophysiological aspects.

This study describes the psychophysiological results of a larger investigation of the clinical, morphological, psychometric and psychophysiological aspects of dementia of the Alzheimer type and depression in elderly patients. Healthy volunteers provided a further measure of control. It was found that widely used clinical rating scales delineated the 3 groups of subjects to a significant degree. The average frequency of the electroencephalogram (EEG), the P2-N2 peak-to-peak amplitude and P3 latency of the auditory evoked potential and a characteristic downward shift of the EEG power spectrum di

Neuropsychology of sexuality in older adults: bridging gaps in literature and future directions in research.

Sexuality is a fundamental part of human existence and it encompasses thoughts, desires, behaviors, relationships, as well as neuropsychological and physiological components. However, sexuality in older adults is under-researched from the neuropsychological and psychophysiological perspectives and is often neglected by healthcare providers in the clinical practice. This article aims to explore the state of the art on the neuropsychology and psychophysiology of older adults' sexuality, proposing future research directions and emphasizing its significance. By summarizing current knowledge on the

Biological mechanism of post-herpetic neuralgia: Evidence from multiple patho-psychophysiological measures.

BACKGROUND: Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), which develops after the resolution of a herpes zoster eruption, is an exceptionally drug-resistant neuropathic pain. The unsatisfactory management of PHN partly results from the difficulty in dissecting out its contributing factors due to the complexity of PHN mechanism. METHODS: Here, to elaborate our understanding of the PHN mechanism and to establish a basis for effective therapeutic strategies, we comprehensively investigated the contributions of multiple factors to PHN severity. RESULTS: Based on the comparison of somatosensory detection thres

Child abuse interacts with hippocampal and corpus callosum volume on psychophysiological response to startling auditory stimuli in a sample of veterans.

Child abuse (CA), which is linked to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), has been associated with a reduction in both hippocampal and corpus callosum (CC) volume. However, few studies have explored these relationships on psychophysiological variables related to trauma exposure. Therefore, we assessed whether the interaction between CA and hippocampal and CC volume were associated with enhanced fear potentiated psychophysiological response patterns in a sample of Veterans. 147 Veteran participants who were part of a larger study of Gulf War Illness were exposed to startling sounds in no, ambi

Autonomic and respiratory characteristics of posttraumatic stress disorder and panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and panic disorder (PD) are two anxiety disorders with prominent psychophysiological symptoms. The PTSD criterion of persistent hyperarousal suggests autonomic dysregulation, and the disorder has been associated with elevated heart rate. In contrast, PD has been associated with respiratory abnormalities such as low end-tidal Pco(2). An integrated analysis of automatic and respiratory function in a direct comparison of these anxiety disorders is currently lacking. METHODS: Electrodermal, cardiovascular, and respiratory psychophysiology was examin

Chronic renal failure and sexual functioning: clinical status versus objectively assessed sexual response.

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunctions are common among patients with chronic renal failure. The prevalence was assessed in a population of 281 patients (20-60 years), and it was attempted to determine whether their mode of treatment (haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or kidney transplantation), or biochemical and endocrine variables and neuropathy affect sexual functioning. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis served as a comparison group. METHODS: Assessment included clinical history, physical and laboratory examinations, questionnaires measuring erotosexual dysfunctions, and a psychophysiological

MMPI results of male candidates for transsexual surgery.

The MMPI was administered to a group of 27 male transsexual candidates for sex change surgery, and their test results were compared with those of 24 male kidney transplant surgical candidates and 26 males suspected of having a psychophysiological disorder. The data revealed a notable absence of psychopathology among the transsexuals as well as the kidney patients, while the psychophysiological patients showed the expected elevations in the Hypochondriasis, Depression, and Hysteria scales. The results were in keeping with previous research of male-to-female sex change candidates that reject the

[Psychogenic disorders: concepts, terminology and classification].

The neurological interest on functional or psychogenic disorders (mental or physical disturbances with no organic basis, generally unleashed by stressful situations) has been receiving increasingly more interest over the last few years. In this article we review concepts, terms and classifications of these disorders, very different over time and among different authors. Psychogenic disorders are divided into: a) dissociation (with memory, consciousness and self-identity impairment), and b) disturbances with somatizations, divided into somatoform (unconscious), factitious (voluntary search for
