Referred adolescents as young adults: the relationship between psychosocial functioning and personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the functioning of young adults who had been referred for psychiatric treatment during adolescence. METHOD: A group of 145 adolescents referred at a mean age of 14 years were interviewed at a mean age of 20 years to ascertain their functioning and whether they suffered from a personality disorder. RESULTS: Having a personality disorder was associated with poor functioning at follow-up independently of adolescent diagnosis. Antisocial personalities were typified by problems with the law, a poor work record and early cohabitation, while other personality disorders were ch

Cognitive abilities and psychosocial functioning in bipolar disorder: findings from the BIPLONG study.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder is associated with impairments in cognition and psychosocial functioning. Although these impairments occur frequently, often persist during euthymic times, and worsen quality of life, the impact of cognitive abilities on functioning has not yet been fully elucidated. METHODS: The current study investigated the effects of cognitive domains (attention/psychomotor speed, verbal learning/memory, executive function) on psychosocial functioning cross-sectionally. Data from 210 euthymic individuals with bipolar disorder [101 female, 109 male; M (age) = 44.47; SD (age) =

Development of a Protocol for Simultaneous Assessment of Cognitive Functioning Under Psychosocial Stress.

This study presents a protocol for induction of moderate psychosocial stress and investigates its impact on psychological and physiological responses. The proposed procedure was designed to enable researchers to assess cognitive performance under effect of various classes of stressors. The protocol's structure contains three main periods: baseline, assessment, and recovery. The assessment stage starts with task anticipation, during which audience (three-member commission) is introduced and apparatus (cameras, microphones, lights, and physiological measuring devices) stationed. Subsequently, co

How Childhood Maltreatment Profiles of Male Victims Predict Adult Perpetration and Psychosocial Functioning.

This study used latent class analysis to empirically identify subgroups of men based on their exposure to childhood maltreatment (i.e., emotional neglect and abuse, physical neglect and abuse, and sexual abuse). It then examined subgroups' differential perpetration of adult intimate partner violence (IPV; both psychological and physical), violence against peers, and sexual assault. Finally, we compared sociodemographic variables and psychosocial functioning across profiles to characterize the adult experiences of men in different maltreatment groups. The community sample consisted of 626 heter

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MALE-PERPETRATED INTERPARENTAL AGGRESSION, PATERNAL CHARACTERISTICS, AND CHILD PSYCHOSOCIAL FUNCTIONING.

It is well established that children in homes where interparental violence is present are at increased risk for psychosocial (i.e., internalizing, externalizing, and attention) difficulties. However, previous studies have provided a limited view on the variety of factors that commonly co-occur in these environments (e.g., other characteristics of the parents and family) and how they may collectively impact children. Knowing this information could have implications for parental interventions aimed at preventing the continuation or initiation of psychosocial problems in children. Thus, the prese

[Psychosocial functioning of adults with late diagnosed autism spectrum disorders--a retrospective study].

BACKGROUND: The first time diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) after passing childhood and adolescence is still considered a rare event. However, in recent years an increasing demand for diagnostic clarifications with suspected ASD in adulthood challenges this view. There is insufficient knowledge about the neuropsychological characterisation and psychosocial outcome of this adult subgroup in the autistic spectrum. AIM: To determine the psychosocial functioning (living status, partnerships, level of education, psychiatric history) of adult patients with late diagnosed ASD. METHODS: I

A genetically informed study of associations between family functioning and child psychosocial adjustment.

Research has documented associations between family functioning and offspring psychosocial adjustment, but questions remain regarding whether these associations are partly due to confounding genetic factors and other environmental factors. The current study used a genetically informed approach, the Children of Twins design, to explore the associations between family functioning (family conflict, marital quality, and agreement about parenting) and offspring psychopathology. Participants were 867 twin pairs (388 monozygotic; 479 dizygotic) from the Twin and Offspring Study in Sweden, their spous

Congenital gastrointestinal anomalies: psychosocial functioning of children with imperforate anus, gastroschisis, and omphalocele.

This study assessed the psychosocial status of 56 children aged 6-16 years with imperforate anus, gastroschisis, or omphalocele. Results indicate that (a) children were of average intellectual ability; (b) approximately 9% of the sample had learning disabilities; (c) although the mean maternal ratings of behavioral adjustment did not differ from those reported for children without anomalies, approximately 18% of the children had deviant adjustment scores; (d) a multivariate risk and resistance model accounted for a significant amount of the variance in children's adjustment; and (e) child, mat

Mental health and psychosocial functioning in children with recent onset of rheumatic disease.

Mental health was evaluated early in the course of juvenile rheumatic disease; 106 parents of children (aged 1-17 yrs) were interviewed and 98 of the children were assessed when the child was hospitalized. Instruments included the Child Assessment Schedule (CAS), the Children's Global Assessment Scale (CGAS) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Half the patients received a psychiatric diagnosis; psychosocial dysfunction of at least mild severity was found in 64% of the patients. In the polyarthritic group there was a negative correlation between CGAS and severity of disease. CBCL behaviour

Psychosocial functioning in older adults with bipolar disorder: Spanish validation of the Functioning Assessment Short Test for Older adults (FAST-O).

OBJECTIVES: Valid measures of psychosocial outcomes in older adults with bipolar disorder (OABD) are needed for clinical and research purposes. This study aimed to validate the Spanish version of the Functioning Assessment Short Test for Older Adults (FAST-O), the first instrument specifically developed to assess psychosocial functioning in OABD. METHODS: We investigated the scale's psychometric properties in terms of internal consistency (reliability), concurrent validity (Spearman correlation), discriminant validity (ROC curve and OABD vs healthy controls -HCs-), and construct validity (int

Childhood maltreatment and mid-life cognitive functioning: divergent psychosocial pathways linked to ethnoracial group.

Childhood maltreatment has lasting adverse effects across multiple domains, contributing to cumulative disadvantage and accelerated aging. These outcomes may reflect not only individual vulnerability, but also ethnoracial-related differences in lived experience, highlighting how sociocultural contexts shape long-term risk. The effect of childhood maltreatment on cognitive functioning later in life varies, raising questions about the mechanisms that drive this association. Data were drawn from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study. Participants were categorized into two racial groups f
