Reframing dementia care in the era of disease-modifying therapies: informational, psychosocial, and systemic insights from Japan.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for Alzheimer’s disease has prompted major changes in diagnostic pathways, referral processes, and service coordination in dementia care. Japan, as an early adopter of DMTs within a nationally coordinated dementia-care framework, offers an opportunity to examine how health service structures respond to these changes. This study explored health service–related support needs emerging across the DMT pathway, focusing on patient and informal caregiver experiences, with complementary perspectives from service providers. METHODS: A q

Exploring gender differences among couples with unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss regarding preferences for supportive care.

BACKGROUND: International guidelines recommend to offer supportive care during a next pregnancy to couples affected by recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). In previous research, several options for supportive care have been identified and women's preferences have been quantified. Although it is known that RPL impacts the mental health of both partners, male preferences for supportive care have hardly been explored. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in couples who visited a specialized RPL clinic in the Netherlands between November 2018 and December 2019. Both members of the couples re

What Support Systems do Women Caring for Preterm Infants at Home Require in Urban Ghana? A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Caring for preterm infants and ensuring their survival beyond neonatal intensive care units remain a challenge in many low-income settings. While studies highlight the difficulties of caring for preterm infants at home, few have focused on the forms, sources, and accessibility to support systems. This study explored the forms of support systems women caring for preterm infants at home in urban Ghana require, and their accessibility to such support systems. METHODS: An explorative cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted. A total of 19 women who were caring for preterm inf

Technology enhancing care for veterans with spinal cord injury (TECVetS): an exploratory qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: The integration of digital and assistive technologies (DAT) into health care continues to expand, offering new opportunities to support health, wellbeing, and quality of life. Veterans living with spinal cord injury (SCI) face complex, ongoing challenges in maintaining daily activities, managing, overall health and psychosocial wellbeing. Tools such as smartphones, smartwatches, video-conferencing, and online support systems have the potential to alleviate some of these difficulties by enhancing monitoring, self-management and enabling more flexible access to support. However, littl

Identifying Psychosocial Distress and Stressors Using Distress-screening Instruments in Patients With Localized and Advanced Penile Cancer.

BACKGROUND: We examined the effects of treatment on the psychological well-being of patients with localized or advanced penile cancer using screening questionnaires to determine the consecutive need for psychosocial care. Penile cancer is a rare, but highly aggressive, malignancy. The psychological stress of patients with penile cancer arises from the cancer diagnosis per se and the corresponding consequences of treatment. In addition, cancer-specific distress results (eg, fear of metastasis, progression, relapse, death). Studies of the psychosocial stress of penile cancer patients are rare.

Labor support in low- and middle-income countries - transformative impact of birth companions and doulas on maternal and neonatal outcomes: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality remain disproportionately high in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), partly due to inadequate intrapartum support, psychosocial stress, and disrespectful maternity care. Continuous labor support from birth companions or doulas offers a low-cost, high-impact intervention with demonstrated benefits in high-income settings, yet LMIC-focused evidence remains fragmented. This review synthesizes current evidence on the effects of birth companionship and doula care on maternal, neonatal, psychosocial, and implementation outcomes in LMIC

Health psychology for more sustainable healthcare: a systems-oriented framework.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare systems face growing pressure from rising costs, workforce shortages, chronic disease burden, and increasing mental health needs. At the same time, many health outcomes depend on behavioural and psychosocial factors that remain insufficiently integrated into healthcare delivery. Although health psychology provides evidence-based approaches to prevention, behaviour change, and patient-centred care, its contribution often remains fragmented rather than structurally embedded within healthcare systems. This policy-oriented conceptual perspective aims to fill this gap and inf

Supporting Minimally Verbal Autistic Girls with Intellectual Disabilities Through Puberty: Perspectives of Parents and Educators.

Limited research has examined puberty in autistic girls, yet alone those who are minimally verbal and with additional intellectual disabilities. In this study, ten parents and ten educators were interviewed about their views and experiences of supporting these girls through puberty. Results demonstrated that many parents had concerns prior to the onset of puberty in these girls. Yet, for most girls, experiences of puberty were felt to be positive, with the girls coping well with changes that they were experiencing (e.g. menstruation, breast development and developing body hair). Thematic analy

[The philosophical roots of "connectedness": The care clinic].

If suicide remains "the only really serious philosophical problem" (A. Camus), historically a certain number of philosophers have legitimized it while others have condemned it. Among the philosophers who admitted that suicide could be a possibility, some showed understanding and others remained more modest. Kierkegaard's philosophical stance, demonstrating that one can never decide for the other where existential problems are concerned, opens a third way. Following him, Michel Cornu coined the expression "ethics of concern". That restlessness, etymologically, can be understood at the same time

Human-like conversational agents as social partners: a scoping review of socioaffective mechanisms, well-being outcomes, risks and governance in the post-Turing era.

INTRODUCTION: Large language models have evolved from laboratory demonstrations into mass-market companion-style conversational agents that many users treat as social partners. As these systems produce increasingly human-like conversational behavior, users may attribute mind, form affective bonds, disclose sensitive information, and rely on agents for emotional support, creating both potential benefits and psychosocial risks. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-ScR-informed scoping review of socioaffective human-artificial intelligence interaction research published or posted from 2016 to 15 Janua

Lived experiences of young people with epilepsy in a resource-constraint setting: Contemporary findings from Cape Coast, Ghana.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition that affects millions of young people globally, often leading to physical, cognitive, psychological, and social challenges. In resource-constraint settings, access to healthcare and medications, stigma, and psychosocial burdens can further exacerbate the impact of the condition. This study explored the lived experiences of young people with epilepsy (YPWE) who attend the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Ghana, focusing on emotional reactions to diagnosis, access to healthcare, coping strategies, support systems, and future aspirations. A qualitative st

Do We Need a Predischarge Psychosocial Evaluation? A Case Report on Peri-Allograft Abscess in a Noncompliant Elderly Kidney Transplant Patient.

Although postrenal transplant surgical site infections are relatively uncommon, we present the case of a 72-year-old diabetic and hypertensive male patient who developed a delayed peri-graft abscess and severe surgical site infection due to a closed drain exit site infection 1 month following a living-related kidney transplant. While the transplant itself was successful and the patient had passed the pretransplant psychosocial evaluation, their post-transplant noncompliance and unresolved social barriers-such as missed outpatient follow-up appointments-significantly contributed to these compli

Moral injury and suicidality among combat-wounded veterans: The moderating effects of social connectedness and self-compassion.

OBJECTIVE: Among combat veterans, moral injury (i.e., the guilt, shame, inability to forgive one's self and others, and social withdrawal associated with one's involvement in events that occurred during war or other missions) is associated with a host of negative mental health symptoms, including suicide. To better inform and tailor prevention and treatment efforts among veterans, the present study examined several potential risk (i.e., overidentification and self-judgment) and protective (i.e., self-kindness, mindfulness, common humanity, and social connectedness) variables that may moderate

Care plans for women pregnant using assisted reproductive technologies: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Between 1 and 5% of children in industrialized countries are conceived through Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). As infertility and the use of ART may be associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, care plans specific to these pregnancies are needed. We conducted a systematic review to examine the existing care plans specific to women pregnant following Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane Library were searched by a senior information specialist. The population of interest included women becoming pregnant with ART (e.g., Intra

Within the Bounds: The Role of Relocation on Intimate Partner Violence Help-Seeking for Immigrant and Native Women With Histories of Homelessness.

Our study examines the effects of abused women's relocation and recentness to an area on informal and formal help-seeking, and how access to personal and social resources affect these relationships. Secondary data analysis was conducted using a sample of 572 women with histories of abuse and homelessness who were interviewed at shelters in the state of Florida. Findings from nested linear regressions demonstrate that relocation affects formal help-seeking while recentness to an area affects informal help-seeking. Access to personal resources also predicts women's use of both informal and forma
