The narrative review describes modern ideas about the structural and dynamic features and disorders of the emotional and personal sphere in adolescents with schizophrenic spectrum disorders, and proves the therapeutic potential of group psychotherapy in the treatment of these disorders. The relevance of addressing emotional and personal deficits in adolescents is due to their impact on their social adjustment, the development of coping strategies, and the overall quality of life. The complexity of psychotherapy is due to a combination of immaturity and vulnerability of the emotional and person

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent mental disorder among adolescents, yet its clinical management remains challenging. This controlled trial aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of self-compassion group psychotherapy as an adjunctive treatment for adolescents with MDD. Sixty adolescents with MDD were recruited from the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between March and August 2024 and were assigned to an intervention group (n = 30) or a comparison group (n = 30). Both groups received standard pharmacotherapy, whereas the intervention group additionally parti

BACKGROUND: Approximately 25% of combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) seek treatment for traumas involving potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), which involve acts of commission, omission, or betrayal that deeply transgress one's sense of right and wrong. The sequelae of exposure to PMIEs, called "moral injury," are associated with functional and psychiatric impairment and disrupt veterans' sense of identity and meaning, ability to connect with and trust others, and engender disturbing guilt, shame, rage, and disgust. Currently, no first-line treatments directly ad

The authors combine a social-constructionist perspective with a psychodynamic one in discussing the problem of trauma and its treatment. They argue that effective treatment of traumatic physical, sexual, and psychological abuse must do more than alleviate the pain of the sufferer. Factors that cause and perpetuate abuse must be addressed by the abused person in conjunction with other nontraumatized persons who may have been abusive or passive in the face of abuse. An argument is made for heterogeneous therapy groups as a context for this to occur.

Changes in verbal affective expression within sessions of two psychotherapy groups run along group-analytic lines were measured using the Process Affective Scoring System developed by Gibbard & Hartman (1973). Tape recordings of group sessions were rated by trained undergraduate students for presence or absence of verbal affect. Relationships between these changes and changes in personal construing were sought. Expression of hostility and affection were found to be good predictors of a successful outcome of therapy. Factors which might account for the unexplained variance of changes in outcome

INTRODUCTION: Transgender and gender-expansive people experience high rates of depression, anxiety, and trauma-related distress, yet few evidence-based interventions are tailored to their needs. Kindred is a novel, group-based ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) program that integrates cognitive processing therapy (CPT) to address identity-based trauma.
METHODS: This mixed-methods pilot study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of Kindred among eight transgender and gender-expansive adults. The nine-week group KAP intervention alternated ketamine dosing session

Experienced and internalized weight stigma (IWS) are associated with a plethora of health and psychosocial consequences. In this study, we tested the outcomes of a 10-12 week, online, counselor-facilitated support group (We Deserve Space; WDS) for individuals who had experienced weight stigma. Twenty-five large-bodied individuals participated in three iterations of the WDS group. Participants average age was 43.68 years (SD = 13.84, range = 28-78). Revisions to WDS curricula were made iteratively in response to feedback. Paired samples t-tests yielded statistically significant improvements on

BACKGROUND: Clinical outcomes for patients with heterogeneous somatoform disorder (bodily distress disorder, including medically unexplained symptoms) are suboptimal, new treatments are required to improve acceptance. Body-oriented psychological therapy approaches have been identified as potentially beneficial additions to the portfolio of treatments. This study was aiming to assess the acceptability, the potential benefits, and associated change processes of manualised group body psychotherapy (BPT) for outpatients with Somatoform Disorder.
METHODS: A randomized controlled feasibility trial

Among behavioral health care providers, use of evidence-based psychotherapies has been associated with lower burnout when there is perceived institutional support, specialty clinical training, and high-quality clinical supervision. Mental health care providers implementing dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) have reported reduced burnout, with some evidence that the DBT consultation team may prevent burnout. Within the Veterans Health Administration, we examined provider experiences of burnout before and during implementation of an adjunctive outpatient DBT skills group and provider consultatio

The current paper is the Alonso Plenary Presidential Address given at the Annual American Group Psychotherapy Association's 2026 Conference. The plenary focuses on how we are uniquely suited to address the psychological stressors, trauma, and mass trauma group members carry into their therapy and support groups. We have at our disposal the multifaceted tools of healing, including (1) small groups, which provide a safe container to process, metabolize and create symbolic meaning; (2) large groups, where projections, stereotypes, racism, and unresolved social traumas can be expressed, examined,

INTRODUCTION: Depression is the most common mental disorder in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Group interpersonal therapy (IPT-G) is a recommended first-line treatment for depression, shown to be safe and effective in clinical trials. However, less is known about its real-world retention and effectiveness when delivered at scale in SSA. We describe retention patterns and associated factors in a large IPT-G programme in Uganda and Zambia.
METHODS: We analysed routine data from adults (≥18 years) who initiated community-based IPT-G in Uganda and Zambia (2020-2021). Depressive symptoms were assessed

Hand gesture deficits are common in schizophrenia predicting poor social functioning with no treatment currently available. We used 10-sessions of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS; 2-weeks) over the right inferior parietal lobe (IPL) in combination with 16-sessions of social cognitive remediation group therapy (SCRT; 8-weeks) to examine improvements in hand gesture performance in schizophrenia. In this 3-arm, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial, 89 patients were randomized and 73 received at least one session of rTMS/SCRT: 19 patients were allocated to the real rT

This article examined how intensive group cognitive-behavioral therapy (GCBT) and group psychodynamic psychotherapy (GPDT) modified depressive symptoms and processing of social information (hostility attributions in a variety of ambiguous situations). The sample (N = 37) comprised individuals who were attending psychotherapy due to psychological distress (GCBT or GPDT). The study examined how group psychotherapy influences depression symptoms and social cognition. There was a decrease in depressive symptoms after three months of intensive CBGT, but PDGT did not significantly improve symptoms o

BACKGROUND: Psychosomatic medicine has developed into an independent medical field over the past decades. Nurses in psychosomatic medicine perform highly specialized tasks. However, the available continuing education programs for specialization are very inconsistent.
AIM: The objective of this study was to conduct a needs assessment to identify the requirements for a specialized training for nurses working in psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy in terms of subject-specific content, as well as the underlying reasons for their needs. We expected a high demand for a specialized training in

Deaf and hard of hearing (D/HOH) individuals experience higher rates of mental health disorders and face significant barriers when accessing services, particularly in group therapy settings. This study investigates group therapists' perspectives on incorporating D/HOH clients into mixed-ability therapy groups predominantly composed of hearing individuals. Using a mixed-methods design, this study compares the experiences of therapists who have facilitated such groups with the perceptions of those who have not. Qualitative results highlight perceived barriers for therapists without experience wo
