Searching for the perfect match: MINDFUL trial pairs FMT and fiber for ulcerative colitis.

Every trial of fecal microbiota transplantation for ulcerative colitis inspires the same question at seminars and journal clubs: can you combine FMT with a diet or fiber to improve strain engraftment and outcomes? The MINDFUL clinical trial explores this question by testing the impact of FMT with or without psyllium fiber supplementation in 27 ulcerative colitis patients.

Canine gastric emptying of fiber meals: influence of meal viscosity and antroduodenal motility.

Dietary fibers such as psyllium and guar gum have been shown to delay the gastric emptying of liquids and solids, presumably due to an increase in meal viscosity. For liquid test meals containing fats, delayed gastric emptying is associated with a reversal of the usual antral-to-duodenal contractile gradient. The present studies were performed to determine whether the gastric emptying of increasingly viscous psyllium and guar gum meals was associated with antroduodenal motility changes. Dogs were surgically fitted with mid-duodenal cannulas for the measurement of gastric emptying. Strain-gauge

The Effect of Fiber Supplementation on Chronic Constipation in Adults: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Chronic constipation is a prevalent disorder that remains challenging to treat. Studies suggest increasing fiber intake may improve symptoms, although recommendations on the fiber type, dose, and treatment duration are unclear. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the effects of fiber supplementation on stool output, gut transit time, symptoms, and quality of life in adults with chronic constipation via a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: Studies were identified using electronic databases, backward citation, and hand searches of abstracts

Dietary management of chronic constipation: a review of evidence-based strategies and clinical guidelines.

This review comprehensively examines the current evidence on the dietary management of chronic constipation, and the dietary recommendations presented in clinical guidelines for chronic constipation. Several randomised controlled trials (RCT) have investigated the effect of dietary supplements, foods and drinks in chronic constipation. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of these RCTs have demonstrated that psyllium supplements, specific probiotic supplements, magnesium oxide supplements, kiwifruits, prunes, rye bread and high mineral water content may be effective in the management of consti

Impact of Ultrasound-Treated Emulsion Gels on the Structure of Purees for Oropharyngeal Dysphagia.

This study investigated the effects of inulin concentration and ultrasonic homogenization on the particle size distribution and microstructure of oil-in-water emulsion gels stabilized with psyllium husk. These gels were then incorporated into meal purees formulated for individuals with dysphagia. Under ultrasound treatment, an increase in inulin from 0% to 20% reduced the average droplet size from 14.98 μm to 1.58 μm, indicating a synergistic effect between ultrasound treatment and inulin in reducing and stabilizing droplet size. The optimal formulation under ultrasound was 20% (w/w) inulin. S

Long-term use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs and other chemopreventors and risk of subsequent colorectal neoplasia.

Our objective was to study the relationship between dispensed aspirin, nonaspirin nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (SAIDs), acetaminophen, calcium, psyllium, and multivitamin preparations and the risk for subsequent colorectal adenoma and adenocarcinoma. The design was a case-control study. The patient population was from a large municipal teaching hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. In logistic regression models, the risk of colorectal adenoma or adenocarcinoma decreased in the first two years of continuous NSAID use in a linear, time-dependent manner.

Potential Benefits of Dietary Fibre Intervention in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Intestinal dysbiosis is thought to be an important cause of disease progression and the gastrointestinal symptoms experienced in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Inflammation appears to be a major contributor in perpetuating a dysregulated gut microbiota. Although current drug therapies can significantly induce and maintain disease remission, there is no cure for these diseases. Nevertheless, ongoing human studies investigating dietary fibre interventions may potentially prove to exert beneficial outcomes for IBD. Postulated mechanisms include direct interactions with the gut mu

Valorisation of Prosciutto di Parma PDO by-products for the development of protein-rich snacks.

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing demand for high-protein products from people who play sports, want to lose weight, or need to gain muscle mass. Among the most useful protein sources are meat-processed products, which, however, have a high environmental impact. The aim of the work was to create a snack rich in proteins, which allows the valorization of the residues of the slicing of raw Parma Ham a typical Italian product labeled as POD (Protected Designation of Origin), which are, currently, sold at low prices for the production of animal feed or stuffed pasta. METHODS: Six different types o

The Short-Term Effects and Tolerability of Low-Viscosity Soluble Fibre on Gastroparesis Patients: A Pilot Clinical Intervention Study.

Gastroparesis is a motility disorder that causes severe gastric symptoms and delayed gastric emptying, where the majority of sufferers are females (80%), with 29% of sufferers also diagnosed with Type-1 or Type-2 diabetes. Current clinical recommendations involve stringent dietary restriction and includes the avoidance and minimization of dietary fibre. Dietary fibre lowers the glycaemic index of food, reduces inflammation and provides laxation. Lack of dietary fibre in the diet can affect long-term gastrointestinal health. Our previously published rheological study demonstrated that "low-visc

Bulk laxative ileus.

In an elderly nursing home resident who had taken excessive dosages of bulk laxative for many years, small-bowel obstruction developed, requiring surgical intervention. A carcinoma of the ascending colon probably was the immediate cause of the obstruction, which resulted in the accumulation and inspissation of the bulk laxative throughout the small bowel. Great care should be exercised in the long-term use of these laxatives.

Ispaghula (Vi-Siblin) versus standard preparation for barium enema.

PURPOSE: To compare 2 methods of colonic cleansing before double-contrast barium enema. A standard preparation of bisacodyl was compared with a preparation of dietary fibre (ispaghula). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The patients referred for double-contrast barium enema were randomly allocated to one of the colonic cleansing regimens. The effectiveness and patient acceptance of the preparations were evaluated. RESULTS: There was a significantly poorer colon cleanness score in the ispaghula group (p = 0.0001). Patient tolerance of the 2 regimens was not significantly different. CONCLUSION: Ispaghula

Video Clip Observation During Chewing Influences Intraoral Manipulations, Bolus Properties, and Sensory Perception of Texture.

This study investigated whether distraction during chewing affects oral processing and texture perception of mashed potato samples that differ in textural properties due to the addition of dietary hydrocolloids: pectin, which produces a softer product, and psyllium, which produces a harder one. Twenty-six participants chewed the samples both in a habitual manner (control condition) and while watching a video clip (distracted condition). Electromyography was employed to characterize chewing behavior, including chewing duration, rate, and muscle activity. Salivary flow and bolus characteristics

Physical effects of dietary fibre on simulated luminal flow, studied by in vitro dynamic gastrointestinal digestion and fermentation.

During the transit through the gastrointestinal tract, fibre undergoes physical changes not usually included in in vitro digestion studies even though they influence nutrient diffusion and might play a role in gut microbiota growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate how physical fibre properties influence the physical properties of gastrointestinal fluids using a gastrointestinal model (stomach, small intestine, ascending colon, transverse colon, and descending colon) (simgi®). Analysis by rheological and particle size characterisation, microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acid (SC
