OBJECTIVES: Botulinum toxin type A (BTX), a powerful neurotoxin, can be an effective treatment choice for diverse muscular disorders and can reduce abnormal muscle activities. Abnormal movements of the mandible can be caused by involuntary and uncontrolled contractions of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LP) in various pathological situations. Previous reports have shown that BTX can reduce abnormal contractions of the LP. However, needle placement into the LP for BTX injection requires skill, experience, and sufficient anatomical knowledge. To place the needle precisely into the LP, ultrasonogra

A novel total temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) was developed with CADskills BV (Ghent, Belgium), aiming to achieve reinsertion of the (LPM) onto a scaffold in the implant. In order to investigate the possibility of reinsertion of the LPM, an animal experiment was conducted. An in vivo sheep experiment was conducted, which involved implanting sheep with a TMJR. Clinical parameters were recorded regularly and computed tomography (CT) scan images of two randomly selected sheep per scan were made at 1, 3, and 6 months. After 9.5 months, the sheep were euthanized, and CT scans of all anim

The aim of this study was to examine the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) parenchyma, myotendinous junction, and tendon in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients using 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Results were compared with findings reported in the literature, in which the LPM has been attributed a major role in triggering TMD. 3T MRI was used for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) imaging. The MRI images of 63 patients were analysed for muscle contracture and atrophy, tendon rupture, signal alterations of the tendon, tendon contrast enhancement, and peritendinous fluid collection. The posterior superior alveolar nerve (PSAN) is a major sensory branch of the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve. A PSAN block is a dental nerve block used for profound anesthesia of the maxillary molars. Complications arising from the PSAN block include hematoma formation, transient diplopia, blurred vision, and temporary blindness. This article presents a case of temporary paresis in the lateral pterygoid muscle following a PSAN block that utilized a 27-gauge long needle. The anatomical parameters and pathogenesis of such a complication are reviewed.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an extremely rare genetic condition characterized by congenital malformation and progressive heterotopic ossification (HO) caused by a recurrent single nucleotide substitution at position 617 in the ACVR1 gene. As the condition progresses, HO leads to joint ankylosis, breathing difficulties, and mouth-opening restriction, and it can shorten the patient's lifespan. This report describes 3 cases of FOP confirmed by genetic testing in patients with restricted mouth opening. Each patient presented a different onset and degree of jaw movement restricti

In current alloplastic total temporomandibular joint replacements (TMJRs) typically the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) insertion is sacrificed, affecting joint function. This study assesses a novel additively manufactured TMJR (CADskills BV, Gent, Belgium) designed to enable LPM reinsertion through a scaffold feature on the implant. Thirteen TMJRs were implanted in Swifter crossbreed sheep, with follow-up CT scans after 288 days to evaluate LPM reintegration. Five specimens showed a close approximation between the LPM enthesis and the scaffold. Histological analysis with Masson-Goldner stainin

BACKGROUND: The removal of ankylotic bone requires detachment of lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) from the ankylosed condyle. Whether spontaneous reattachment of LPM occurs or not following autogenous ramus-condyle unit (RCU) reconstruction in temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA) is not yet known.
PURPOSE: The study purpose was to measure and compare the incidence of spontaneous LPM reattachment following 2 RCU reconstruction techniques-costochondral graft (CCG) and transport disc distraction osteogenesis (TDDO) and its implications on postoperative jaw motion.

BACKGROUND: Texture features were the intrinsic properties of the human tissues and could efficiently detect the subtle functional changes of involved tissue. The pathologic changes of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) were significantly correlated with the temporomandibular disc displacement. However, the occult functional changes of LPM could not be detected by the naked eye on the medical images. The current study was aimed to evaluate the functional changes of the LPM in the patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) using texture analysis.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with TMD we

Whiplash injury is an initiating or aggravating factor of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Although there are sex-related differences in the mechanism of pain perception and pain control, there is a lack of research on differences in TMD after whiplash injury. We aimed to evaluate sex-related differences in the clinical symptoms and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of patients with TMD attributed to whiplash injury. This retrospective, cross-sectional study included 100 patients (50 women; 50 men; mean age, 37.60 years) who visited our oro-facial pain clinic with symptoms of TMD afte

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The superior head of the lateral pterygoid muscle (SHLP), which inserts on the anterior disk of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), can spasm, contracting and exerting forward traction on the disk. This mechanism can lead to anterior displacement. In TMJ dysfunction, it is hypothesized that the SHLP will demonstrate morphologic changes with measurable changes in signal intensity related to atrophy or muscular edema, or both. The goal of this study was to evaluate the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) in patients with TMJ dysfunction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with di

To grasp the documented evidences available regarding the cause of the anteriorly displaced human temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc. With 20 specimens of human TMJ from cadavers, at first the number of heads of lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) bundles were analysed with macroanatomical method. Secondary histological procedure with haematoxyline and eosine staining and orceine staining were carried out for the same specimens. Macroscopically, in 13 specimens an upper and a lower head of the LPM were present. In the other seven specimens, not only an upper and a lower head, but also a third inner

Disc displacement is accepted as one of major findings in temporomandibular disorders (TMD). However, the associations of disc positions with morphological and positional changes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) components and lateral pterygoid (LP), TMD clinical symptoms, and occlusion have rarely been discussed quantitatively. In this study, the morphological and positional changes of TMJ components and LP were assessed by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and tomography of the TMJ in 41 TMD and nine control (CN) subjects. Disc positions in TMD subjects were divided into normal posit

INTRODUCTION: Myositis is a rare extra-intestinal presentation in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and its occurrence has only been described in a few case reports. However, it is essential to consider other potential causes as patients with IBD are more susceptible to infections due to their immunocompromised status, which may also be exacerbated by immunosuppressive drugs contributing to myositis. Our case highlights the complexity and challenges in diagnosing and managing myositis in patients with IBD as well as a review of the literature.
