Developing sustainable genomics capacity in the Global South requires more than technology transfer; it depends on human-centered approaches based on the workflows and existing expertise of laboratory personnel, institutional collaboration, and long-term integration into health systems. Drawing on lessons learned from regional capacity-building initiatives, this article proposes ten simple rules for implementing and sustaining genomics capacity within public health and clinical laboratory settings. These rules emphasize local context, strategic planning, continuous learning, and equitable coll

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is currently an urgent public health problem as high morbidity from the virus leaves populations with negative physical, social, and economic impacts. CHIKV has the potential to affect every organ of an individual, leaving patients with lifelong impairments which negatively affect their quality of life. In this review, we show the importance of CHIKV in research and public health by demonstrating the immunopathology of CHIKV as it presents in different organ systems. Papers used in this review were found on PubMed, using "chikungunya and [relevant organ system]". Ther

BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarettes, commonly referred to as e-cigarettes, have spread rapidly across global markets. Their growth has created regulatory concerns involving product safety, nicotine levels, youth access, advertising practices, flavor controls, and protection of public health. Countries have adopted different regulatory approaches because of variation in public health priorities, tobacco-control policies, and legal systems. Bibliometric analysis cannot measure whether regulations are effective, but it can show how the scientific literature informing policy has developed and where

BACKGROUND: Successive Australian healthcare policies promoting privatisation have increased demand for independent speech-language pathology (SLP) services. This growth has intensified pressure on healthcare funding mechanisms and highlighted confusion in the literature between health financing systems and healthcare funding provisions at the funding model level. In response, public funding arrangements have increasingly supported access to private SLP services for Australian children and young people. This scoping review aimed to identify and describe current public funding models (PFMs) use

The concept of health span is an emerging topic in recent years, with a truly palpable relevance to public health. With ageing comes a loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and performance, which is termed as sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is a major public health concern and poses a challenge to health-care systems. Modifiable lifestyle factors may be linked to the course of sarcopenia progression. Many countries developed diagnostic tools to accurately detect sarcopenia for its prevention, delay, or treatment. However, to date, there is no sufficient information regarding the status of sarcopenia

BACKGROUND: Schools are called upon to use data-informed practice to support student health and well-being. However, they face implementation challenges including data accessibility and literacy. Data dashboards offer a method to address these challenges, thereby promoting data-informed practice. This paper reports on a pilot of The School Health Research Network Data Dashboard with secondary schools.
METHODS: The Dashboard was piloted by three secondary schools (recruited by size; free school meal entitlement) in Wales, UK. Interviews with school staff (N = 7) and public health practitioners

The year 2022 saw COVID-19 as the primary public health concern, with vaccine rollout and mandates at the forefront. Other viral infectious diseases, such as Monkeypox and Ebola, emerged as public health concerns. Climate change and political conflicts significantly impacted global health, increasing the demand for humanitarian assistance and protection. In 2023, it remains crucial to identify global and public health priority areas to coordinate and implement effective solutions. Through discussions with public health practitioners and researchers, we have identified key priority areas for 20

Globally, countries have used diverse methods to report data during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using international guidelines and principles of emergency management, we compare national data reporting systems in African countries in order to determine lessons for future pandemics. We analyse COVID-19 reporting practices across 54 African countries through 2020. Reporting systems were diverse and included summaries, press releases, situation reports and online dashboards. These systems were communicated via social media accounts and websites belonging to ministries of health and public health. Data

BACKGROUND: Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS) is one of the world's largest universal health systems and operates through a plural governance arrangement involving public, philanthropic, and community actors under public coordination. In Primary Health Care (PHC), non-profit Social Health Organizations (OSS) are increasingly responsible for managing public healthcare facilities in large urban municipalities. However, evaluation systems used by public managers remain largely focused on service delivery indicators, with limited consideration of equity and user experience.

The global prevalence of substance abuse and mental disorders continues to challenge healthcare systems, with one in eight individuals affected. The therapeutic potential of psychedelics is recognized not only for treating mental disorders but also for enhancing well-being and promoting pro-social behaviors. Conventional biomedical research models fall short in addressing the broader health needs of populations and poorly suited for overcoming barriers to service delivery. This special issue includes six articles that explore alternative approaches to psychedelic research and practice, emphasi

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated long-standing disparities that many people in the United States experience due to their race and ethnicity and socioeconomic status.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: An outcry from several relevant stakeholders ignited a federal response from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), who, among other entities, decided to address low health literacy (HL) in underserved communities. Evidence suggests that HL impacts under-resourced communities' understanding of health issues and whether

In December 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) convened a meeting of national public health partners to identify priorities for addressing social determinants of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis (TB). The consultants were divided into four working groups: (1) public health policy, (2) data systems, (3) agency partnerships and prevention capacity building, and (4) prevention research and evaluation. Groups focused on identifying top priorities; describing

BACKGROUND: Volcanic eruptions pose substantial health risks to populations living in proximity to active volcanoes, impacting respiratory, cardiovascular, ocular, dermatological, and mental health systems. With a growing number of people globally exposed to volcanic activity, there is a critical need for an interdisciplinary understanding of these health consequences, particularly concerning their pathophysiological mechanisms, epidemiological patterns, and public health implications.
METHODS: This scoping review systematically synthesized evidence from studies conducted near 27 volcanoes ac

BACKGROUND: Much consideration has been given to community-level partnerships in public health. Faith communities are important systems of connection and support for many people but may be overlooked as public health partners in Australia and the United Kingdom. Efforts to enhance community health through partnerships between faith communities and health and wellbeing professionals and organisations have been explored in recent academic literature. Future faith-health partnerships could be enhanced through an examination of the key challenges and facilitators discussed in these articles. This

This position paper introduces young carers as a key stakeholder within AI. Research on AI for health care endeavors to assist and optimize current health care services; yet, young carers have been neglected thus far. Accordingly, this paper situates itself at the intersection of young people under the age of 18 years old providing care (referred to as young carers) and AI research. Through a socio-legal and public health lens, this paper (1) situates young carers to showcase (2) why they must be accounted for in AI systems, and (3) how AI researchers can do so. This lens highlights the diffic

INTRODUCTION: Handwashing is widely promoted as a key preventive behavior in public health; however, its historical development reflects a complex interplay of cultural, religious, and scientific influences that remain insufficiently theorized in the literature. This study examines the evolution of handwashing practices through the lens of Cultural-Historical Activity Theory, aiming to conceptualize handwashing as a product of interacting activity systems rather than a purely biomedical behavior.
METHODS: Drawing on a historical research design, we synthesized evidence from diverse cultural t
