Differences in alcohol-related research publication output between countries: a manifestation of societal concern?

In a recent bibliometric analysis of alcohol- and other drug-related research publications in 11 countries, differences were found in research output across countries. In this paper we use additional secondary data to explore possible socio-historical factors that may contribute to differences in alcohol-related peer-reviewed publications across countries. Aside from general scientific productivity, we propose a possible link between the degree to which societies are concerned with alcohol and alcohol-related research outputs.

The relation between scores on noise annoyance and noise disturbed sleep in a public health survey.

The relation between responses to survey questions on noise annoyance and self-reported sleep disturbance has been analysed to gain insight in its dependency on noise source or noise type and on individual characteristics. The results show a high correlation between responses (scores 0-10) with Pearson's correlation coefficient close to 0.8 for respondents who report hearing the source. At the same level of annoyance, scooters and neighbours are associated with more sleep disturbance, air and road traffic with less. The relation between Annoyance (A) and Sleep Disturbance (SD) is also signific

Knowledge about osteoporosis and its related factors among public health nurses in Taiwan.

Although osteoporosis prevention has been identified as a critical issue for women and the elderly population, some health professionals still misunderstand osteoporosis. Public health nurses (PHNs) are responsible for health promotion and disease prevention in community populations. The objective of this study was to investigate PHNs' knowledge of osteoporosis and its related factors. A cross-sectional research design was used: 678 subjects from 3,300 PHNs who worked at health centers in Taiwan during 2000 were selected by cluster random sampling to participate in this study; 539 of them retu

Economic and public health impact of pneumonia-related mortality in Spain: a decade-long analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Pneumonia remains a major cause of premature mortality worldwide and represents a growing public health challenge in aging societies such as Spain. Population aging in Spain increases the need for updated assessments of pneumonia-related premature mortality and its economic impact. Quantifying the productivity burden associated with these deaths is essential to inform health policy and resource planning. METHODS: The human capital approach was applied to estimate the years of potential labour productive life lost (YPLPLL) and productivity losses attributable to pneumonia-related

Analysis of circumstances in police-related fatalities comparing medical examiner records with a public database.

Assessing circumstances surrounding police-related deaths is hampered by the absence of an official national database. The National Vital Statistics System, which compiles death certificates filed by medical examiners and coroners, misses approximately one-half of deaths due to police use of force. The void has been filled by the emergence of several unofficial databases sourced from public records, which have been used, for example, to estimate the number of fatal police shootings of unarmed individuals. However, these public databases have not been validated against official records. Further

Increasing prebunking effectiveness to aid disinformation-susceptible publics in overcoming vaccine-related disinformation.

In the dynamic intersection of health communication and disinformation, this study investigates tailored intervention strategies for disinformation-susceptible public segments classified by the motivation-knowledge-attitude framework. Using a two-phase survey and experimental design with American adults, participants were segmented into four public types (disinformation-immune, vulnerable, receptive, and amplifying) and exposed to one of three inoculation message conditions: autonomy supportive, autonomy controlling, or control. Data were analyzed using ANCOVA with Bonferroni-adjusted post-hoc

The top 50 cited publications relating to femoral shaft fractures - A bibliometric analysis of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Femoral shaft fractures (FSF's) represent common orthopaedic injuries, traditionally resulting from high-energy trauma in younger patients. Effective treatment is crucial for functional recovery, with significant social and economic implications. Despite extensive literature relating to FSF's, the quality of evidence and research trends remain unclear. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using Web of Science (August 2024) to identify the top 50 most-cited publications related to FSF's. Publications were screened using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, focusing

Public perceptions related to healthcare preparedness to anti-amyloid therapies for Alzheimer's Disease in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The approval of lecanemab, an anti-amyloid therapy for Alzheimer's disease (AD), necessitates addressing healthcare preparedness for disease-modifying treatment (DMT) to ensure appropriate, safe, and sustainable drug administration. Understanding public perceptions on this matter is crucial. We aimed to assess discrepancies and similarities in the perceptions of Japanese trial-ready cohort study ('J-TRC webstudy') participants and clinical specialists in the fields of dementia treatment and radiology, concerning affairs related to challenges in DMT preparedness. METHODS: This was

The Epidemiology and Societal Impact of Aging-Related Functional Limitations: A Looming Public Health Crisis.

Functional impairment and disability become increasingly common with aging. As more people are reaching old age, the number of people needing care will rise, creating a crisis of need for care. Population studies and clinical trials have demonstrated the importance of the detection of early loss of strength and walking speed in predicting disability and in designing interventions to prevent functional decline. There is a large societal burden linked to age-related disorders. Physical activity is to date the only intervention that has prevented disability in a long-term clinical trial, but is d

An Equity-Based Scoring System for Evaluating Surveillance-Related Harm in Public Health Crises.

BACKGROUND: Although surveillance systems used to mitigate disasters serve essential public health functions, communities of color have experienced disproportionate harms (eg, criminalization) as a result of historic and enhanced surveillance. METHODS: To address this, we developed and piloted a novel, equity-based scoring system to evaluate surveillance systems regarding their potential and actual risk of adverse effects on communities made vulnerable through increased exposure to policing, detention/incarceration, deportation, and disruption of access to social services or public resources.

Effects of media representations of drug related deaths on public stigma and support for harm reduction.

BACKGROUND: Drug related deaths (DRD) are at historically high levels in the United Kingdom (UK), but some approaches that have the potential to reduce risk of mortality remain controversial. Public support makes an important contribution to drug policy development but there are high levels of public stigma towards people who use drugs (PWUD), and this is partly shaped by media representations. We investigated whether depiction of the characteristics of decedents represented in news articles about DRD was associated with differences in stigmatising attitudes and support for harm reduction poli

Trauma-Related Dissociation and the Dissociative Disorders:: Neglected Symptoms with Severe Public Health Consequences.

Trauma-related dissociation is a major public health risk warranting the attention of the healthcare professions. Severe dissociative pathology or dissociative disorders (DDs) are more prevalent than some commonly assessed psychiatric disorders (e.g., Bipolar Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Schizophrenia), yet are often under-recognized and undertreated, despite being associated with significant disability and chronic medical issues, among many other severe and costly public health consequences. In fact, people living with DDs spend an average of 5 to 12.4 years actively engaged in tr
