OBJECTIVE: Pudendal nerve stimulation (PNS) aims to maximize afferent or efferent stimulation from the sacral plexus.
BACKGROUND: We hypothesized this may be a promising new treatment for patients with bowel dysfunction in complete cauda equina syndrome (CES).
METHODS: Thirteen patients with complete CES [8 constipation predominant (group 1) and 5 incontinence predominant (group 2)] had a 3-week trial of PNS. Patients who showed a 50% or more improvement in symptoms during the trial phase proceeded to permanent neurostimulator implantation.
RESULTS: Five (63%) of the 8 patients in group 1 s

INTRODUCTION: Pudendal nerve neurapraxia is a classic complication after traction on the fracture table. Diagnosis, however, is difficult and often overlooked, especially after arthroscopy in traction on fracture table; incidence is therefore not known exactly.
HYPOTHESIS: The study hypothesis was that incidence of pudendal nerve neuropathy exceeds 1% after hip arthroscopy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Results for 150 patients (79 female, 71 male) undergoing hip arthroscopy between 2000 and 2010 were analyzed retrospectively. The principal assessment criterion was onset of pudendal neuralgia. Seco

Bladder contractions evoked by pudendal nerve stimulation in both spinal intact and spinal transected cats support the possibility of restoring urinary function in persons with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). However, electrically evoked bladder responses in persons with SCI were limited to transient contractions at relatively low pressures. This prompted the present study, which presents a detailed quantification of the responses evoked by selective stimulation of individual branches of the pudendal nerve at different stimulation frequencies. In spinal intact cats anesthetized with alpha-ch

Pudendal nerve involvement was demonstrated by electromyography of perineal muscles and by recordings of their direct and reflex responses on perineal electrical stimulation in 10 patients with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy. Patients reported no defecation disturbances and the 6 men had good erections. Urinary stress incontinence was seen in those 2 (of 4) female patients who had delivered.

One hundred and eighty-three patients undergoing instrumental delivery were randomly divided into two groups, one of which received low spinal anaesthesia and the other pudendal nerve block for delivery. Both were administered by the operator. No patient who received spinal anaesthesia experienced pain. 62% of patients who had a rotational delivery under pudendal nerve block experienced severe pain; 15% had pain during direct delivery. Hypotension was not observed. The incidence of postnatal complications was similar in each group. Low spinal anaesthesia in the hands of the operator provided s

BACKGROUND: Pudendal neuralgia caused by entrapment syndrome (PNE) is an underdiagnosed condition with severe quality of life (QoL) impact. In cases unresponsive to medical treatment, a minimally invasive surgical approach, such as laparoscopic surgery, is preferred, particularly in patients presenting central sensitisation (CS) and myofascial syndrome (MS). Although the procedure has proven to be safe and feasible, limited studies examinate its impact on QoL.
OBJECTIVES: This retrospective observational study was conducted at the Résilience Center, Axium Clinic, Aix-en-Provence, France, with

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that poststimulation block of nerve conduction can be achieved by low-frequency (≤1 kHz) biphasic stimulation (LFBS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A tripolar cuff electrode was placed around the pudendal nerve in cats to deliver LFBS (1 kHz, 500 Hz, and 100 Hz). Two bipolar hook electrodes were placed central and distal to the cuff electrode to induce external urethral sphincter (EUS) contractions. A catheter was inserted into the urethra to record EUS contraction pressure. Pudendal nerve block by LFBS was confirmed by the failure of the central hook electrode sti

AIM: To evaluate the pudendal nerve segments that could be identified on magnetic resonance neurography (MRN) before and after surgical marking of different nerve segments.
METHODS: The hypothesis for this study was that pudendal nerve and its branches would be more easily seen after the surgical nerve marking. Institutional board approval was obtained. One male and one female cadaver pelvis were obtained from the anatomy board and were scanned using 3 Tesla MRI scanner using MR neurography sequences. All possible pudendal nerve branches were identified. The cadavers were then sent to the aut

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of pudendal nerve electroacupuncture for lumbar and lower limb symptoms in patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis for whom acupuncture of the lumbar and lower limb muscles had been ineffective.
METHODS: Nine patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis for whom conventional acupuncture at the lumbar and lower limb muscles had no effect. Pudendal nerve electroacupuncture was performed eight times (once per week). VAS scores and continuous walking distance were used to evaluate changes in symptoms.
RESULTS: The following changes in symptoms occurre

The objective of this study was to evaluate the possibilities of reinnervation of the gracilis muscle, transposed around the anus, by the pudendal nerve using an end-to-side nerve anastomosis. This study was carried out in 14 cases (7 adult human cadavers bilaterally). The gracilis muscle and its vascular-nervous bundle have been dissected and the nerve innervating the gracilis muscle has been cut at its origin. The gracilis muscle, accompanied by its nerve, has then been transposed around the anus. The pudendal nerve has been dissected from its extrapelvic part. The reinnervation using an end

PURPOSE: Anesthetic infiltration of the pudendal nerve at the ischial spine can relieve perineal pain in cases of compression or distention. The aim of our study was to look for a real-time, visually controlled infiltration technique using ultrasound.
METHODS: Fifty-three volunteers were examined in a prone position using a 3.5-MHz curved-array probe in color-coded Doppler mode. The deep gluteal region was scanned in two perpendicular planes, longitudinal and transverse to the internal pudendal artery.
RESULTS: On the transverse planes the ischial spine, the sacrospinous ligament, and the in

BACKGROUND: Pudendal neuralgia (PN) lacks specific treatments and severely affects patients' quality of life. Although pudendal nerve pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) can alleviate symptoms, its overall efficacy is not satisfactory. Ganglion impar neurolysis (GIN) has been widely employed for perineal pain management. We hypothesize that combining PRF with GIN may enhance therapeutic outcomes for PN compared to PRF monotherapy. To the best of our knowledge, no relevant reports have been found.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether GIN improves PRF treatment efficacy for PN.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective c

OBJECTIVE: Deep gluteal syndrome is a clinical condition in which discomfort may arise due to the pathoanatomy of the subgluteal space. We conducted an anatomical exploration to categorize the relationship of the piriformis muscle, sciatic nerve (SN), and pudendal nerve (PN) to the ischial spine (IS) and sacrospinous ligament.
METHODS: We analyzed 22 cadavers. The piriformis muscle, SN, and PN were exposed through either a transgluteal approach or a gluteal flap. The relationship of the neural structures to the IS, sacrospinous ligament, and ischial bone as they exit the greater sciatic foram

OBJECT: Nerve transfers are an effective means of restoring control to paralyzed somatic muscle groups and, recently, even denervated detrusor muscle. The authors performed a cadaveric pilot project to examine the feasibility of restoring control to the urethral and anal sphincters using a femoral motor nerve branch to reinnervate the pudendal nerve through a perineal approach.
METHODS: Eleven cadavers were dissected bilaterally to expose the pudendal and femoral nerve branches. Pertinent landmarks and distances that could be used to locate these nerves were assessed and measured, as were ner
