[Effectiveness and disposition of the newly developed cephalosporin cefquinome in puerperal septicemia and toxemia in gilts].

Epizootiological, clinical, bacteriological and haematological studies were carried out to assess the effectiveness of the recently developed cephalosporin preparation Cefquinome in the treatment of the puerperal septicaemia and toxaemia syndrome. Cefquinome was administered at three different doses (1, 2 and 4 mg/kg BW) to 188 sows with feverish puerperal illness. Amoxicillin (7 mg/kg BW) was used as a control drug. In 41% of cases endometritis was a monoinfection whereas in 70% of mammary infections mixed infections were diagnosed. Results showed that for therapy of puerperal septicaemia and

Incidence and risk factors for postpartum infections: A Norwegian cohort study, 2012-2020.

INTRODUCTION: Few epidemiological studies have examined postpartum infections in the Nordic countries. This study aimed to assess the incidence and risk factors for postpartum infections in Norway. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a historical cohort study including all deliveries in Norway from 2012 to 2020, using linked nationwide data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway, the Norwegian Patient Registry, and Statistics Norway. We defined two outcomes: endometritis/puerperal sepsis (O85, International Classification of Diseases 10th version (ICD-10); the code does not differentiate be

Puerperal septic shock complicated with symmetrical peripheral gangrene: A case report.

RATIONALE: Puerperal sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by infection that can rapidly progress to multisystem infection and toxin-mediated shock. Symmetrical peripheral gangrene is defined as symmetrical distal ischemic damage in two or more sites in the absence of major vascular occlusive disease. The syndrome is devastating and rare. In this study, we introduce a case of puerperal septicemia complicated by symmetrical peripheral gangrene. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 23-year-old woman delivered a live female infant vaginally after cervical balloon dilatation at 39 weeks of gestation. Pers

[Clinical examinations of gilts with puerperal septicemia and toxemia].

In a clinical examination on 78 gilts suffering from feverish puerperal illness the signs were documented. 42 gilts without puerperal disturbances out of the same farms (n = 22) were used as a control. Data for statistics were recorded in minute-books, listing 38 parameters, partly divided in three or four subunits. Within the first 24 hours after parturition 60% of the probands were registered, the other gilts up to the 72nd hour after parturition. 42.3% of the patients beared for the first or second time. Duration of partus averaged more than six hours in 85.9% of patients with consequent pu

[Puerperal meningitis by group B streptococcus].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To describe an unusual clinical presentation of puerperal meningitis by Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae). PATIENT AND METHOD: We report a case of puerperal meningitis for S. agalactiae, a rare form of infection in a healthy puerperal and with an atypical presentation. RESULTS: We deeply report the clinical case, the procedures performed to exclude other diseases and management differences. It is compared with meningitis cases reported in the literature, and as in these, we opt for and early diagnosis and a rapid onset of antibiotic treatment. CONCLUSION: Me

Mixed epithelial and stromal tumor of the kidney in a puerperal woman.

Puerperal pyrexia is still rampant, especially in third world countries, and is usually due to puerperal sepsis, urinary tract infections, upper respiratory infection, and breast infection. Rarely, in third world countries like India, it may be due to tuberculosis, malaria, typhoid, and so on, which are also rampant in the general population. Mixed epithelial and stromal tumor of the kidney (MESTK) is a recently recognized subset of renal tumors composed mainly of smooth muscle cells in which epithelial structures are embedded. It usually occurs in middle aged and older women. In the present c

A review of health system infection control measures in developing countries: what can be learned to reduce maternal mortality.

A functional health system is a necessary part of efforts to achieve maternal mortality reduction in developing countries. Puerperal sepsis is an infection contracted during childbirth and one of the commonest causes of maternal mortality in developing countries, despite the discovery of antibiotics over eighty years ago. Infections can be contracted during childbirth either in the community or in health facilities. Some developing countries have recently experienced increased use of health facilities for labour and delivery care and there is a possibility that this trend could lead to rising

CA-MRSA puerperal mastitis and breast abscess: a potential problem emerging in Europe with many unanswered questions.

Puerperal mastitis and breast abscess caused by community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is a condition rarely described in Europe to date. We report and comment on a case of CA-MRSA puerperal breast abscess in a 22-year-old primiparous mother. This aetiology was suspected before the antibiotic susceptibility profile of the strain isolated from the abscess was known on account of a history of previous skin colonisation detected in her baby. Additionally, the most striking epidemiological and therapeutic aspects, potential consequences of cross-infection between

Puerperal septic shock and necrotizing fasciitis caused by staphylococcus caprae and Escherichia coli.

Puerperal sepsis is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Postpartum pelvic infections can cause various complications, including wound infections and necrotizing fasciitis. Several microorganisms are known to cause such infections; however, no study has reported on staphylococcus caprae, a coagulase-negative staphylococcus that is isolated frequently from animals and infrequently from human specimens, as a causative agent. Here, we report a rare case of septic shock complicated by necrotizing fasciitis after a cesarean section. This is the first report of a

The impact of Q fever-phase-specific milk serology for the diagnosis of puerperal and chronic milk shedding of C. burnetii in dairy cows.

C. burnetii infection might be associated with puerperal shedding; additionally, the chronic shedding of this pathogen in milk has been observed in individual animals. A longitudinal survey was performed in an endemically infected dairy cow herd with 100 cows in order to compare phase-specific milk-serology with pathogen shedding. From March 2010 through December 2011, 870 individual milk samples from 212 cows were analysed using both quantitative (q) PCR and phase-specific antibody-ELISA. The mean milk-shedding/cow was calculated for 137 cows with > or = 3 milk samples per cow. In addition, 1

[Clinical statistical study on puerperal sepsis risk factors].

The aim of this study was to assess some risk factors involved in puerperal sepsis, such as: cesarean delivery, diabetes mellitus, preterm delivery and obesity, history of infections and anemia. The authors highlighted that new prevention methods and techniques could reduce the incidence and severity of post-cesarean puerperal sepsis (uterine infarction, peritonitis, toxic shock syndrome with Group A streptococcus).

Necrotizing cervical and uterine infection in the postpartum period caused by group A streptococcus.

BACKGROUND: Group A Streptococcus, once the most common causes of puerperal sepsis, is now a rare cause of postpartum fever. CASE: A term 27-year-old woman presented after spontaneous membrane rupture. After an uncomplicated vaginal delivery, she became febrile without a source of infection. Despite two different antibiotic regimens, she remained febrile for 3 days. A computed tomography scan showed a wedge-shaped discontinuity in the anterior uterus suggesting uterine infection with early abscess formation. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy and hysterectomy, with an uneventful pos

Human CEACAM1 is targeted by a Streptococcus pyogenes adhesin implicated in puerperal sepsis pathogenesis.

Life-threatening bacterial infections in women after childbirth, known as puerperal sepsis, resulted in classical epidemics and remain a global health problem. While outbreaks of puerperal sepsis have been ascribed to Streptococcus pyogenes, little is known about disease mechanisms. Here, we show that the bacterial R28 protein, which is epidemiologically associated with outbreaks of puerperal sepsis, specifically targets the human receptor CEACAM1. This interaction triggers events that would favor the development of puerperal sepsis, including adhesion to cervical cells, suppression of epithel

[Puerperal pathology].

The puerperium is the period from the end of labour to the appearance of the first menstruation. The possible pathologies that can occur in this period of time are the most frequent cause of maternal mortality even in our setting. The pathology of lactation includes failure of breastfeeding, cracks in the nipple, mammary ingurgitation and puerperal mastitis. Puerperal infection is a frequent obstetric complication although clinical guidelines for prophylaxis have considerably reduced its incidence. The vascular pathology of the puerperium includes clinical features of great seriousness, repres

Case report: An unusual presentation of puerperal sepsis.

Group A Streptococcus (GAS; Streptococcus pyogenes) is a facultative gram-positive coccus, uncommonly colonizing parturient genitalia, where its presence can potentially lead to a life-threatening invasive infection after delivery. GAS infection typically occurs within the first 4 days post-partum and is characterized by high fever, chills, flashing, abdominal pain, and uterine tenderness. Nonetheless, patients with GAS puerperal sepsis may have an unusual presentation, when fever is absent, and the symptoms and signs can be mild, non-specific, and not indicative of the severity of infection.

Carbapenem Resistant Organisms: An Unusual Aetiology for Puerperal Sepsis.

Puerperal infection is a common complication of labour. It occurs universally and is usually responsive to first line antibiotics. However, resistance to first line antibiotics and even second line antibiotics is becoming more wide spread. We report a case of puerperal infection caused by carbapenem resistant organisms leading to prolonged fever and hospitalisation. A 28-year-old primigravida, following caesarean section done elsewhere, for elevated blood pressure presented with high grade fever. Outcomes of hysterectomy for puerperal sepsis at an Academic Hospital: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-related sepsis contributes significantly to maternal mortality. While there is substantial information on postpartum hysterectomy, information on outcomes of hysterectomy as source control for puerperal sepsis is limited. Knowledge of the common causative organisms and their antimicrobial sensitivity may assist with targeted antibiotic therapy to improve patient outcomes. This study described the indications and outcomes of surgery in patients following hysterectomy as source control for puerperal sepsis. METHODS: In a retrospective study, we analysed the intra-operative
