Dysfunction of the pupillary light reflex in experimental autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy.

Autoimmune autonomic ganglionopathy (AAG) is an antibody-mediated form of severe autonomic failure. AAG is associated with serum antibodies against ganglionic acetylcholine receptors (AChR) and appears to result from impaired synaptic transmission in autonomic ganglia. The rabbit model of experimental AAG (EAAG), induced by immunization, reproduces the cardinal features of the human disease. Pupillary dysfunction is a prominent and defining feature in both AAG and EAAG. We adapted infrared computer-assisted video pupillometry to record direct pupil light responses in control and EAAG rabbits.

Can Pupil Changes Detect Autonomic Dysregulation After Spinal Cord Injury? A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: The autonomic neural circuitry of the pupil makes it a unique target for identifying impaired autonomic regulation following spinal cord injury (SCI). This systematic review characterizes the evidence on pupillary changes after SCI. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL. Articles were independently assessed by 2 reviewers and included studies reporting on pupillary changes (e.g., miosis, mydriasis, anisocoria) following traumatic or nontraumatic SCI at any level. Data on study design, patient demographics, injury characteristics, and pupillary c

Neuro-ophthalmologic side-effects of systemic medications.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Systemic medications may cause side-effects manifesting primarily as neuro-ophthalmologic problems. It is paramount for the physician to be updated on both well recognized and novel associations between drugs and their potential adverse reactions. RECENT FINDINGS: There is a growing list of medications that can cause pupil dilation, pupil constriction, dyschromatopsia, worsening of ocular myasthenia gravis, posterior reversible leukoencephalopathy syndrome, pseudotumor cerebri, disturbances in eye movements, accommodation problems, or optic neuropathy. This is partly due to

Pupil responses to social stimuli are associated with adaptive behaviors across the first 24 months of life.

BACKGROUND: Pupil changes in response to well-controlled stimuli can be used to understand processes that regulate attention, learning, and arousal. This study investigates whether pupil dynamics to social stimuli are associated with concurrent adaptive behavior in typically developing infants. To accomplish this, we developed and assessed pupillary responses to Stimuli for Early Social Arousal and Motivation in Infants (SESAMI). METHODS: A sample of forty-six typically developing children aged six to twenty-four months were exposed to SESAMI. Infants were presented with either dynamic social

Efficacy of automatic pupillometry as a screening technique to detect autonomic dysfunction in bipolar disorder.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Autonomic nervous system abnormalities in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder are controversial. Pupillary features may be affected as a result of autonomic nervous system abnormalities in bipolar disorder. Small changes in pupillary responses may not be noticeable on clinical examination. Automated pupillemetries can be helpful in demonstrating these changes reliably and quantitatively. BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the static and dynamic pupillary responses of bipolar patients with healthy controls. In addition, pupillary response differences betwe

Attitude and knowledge of high school pupils towards adolescents with special needs (Tourette's syndrome).

OBJECTIVE: To determine high school pupils' attitudes towards adolescents with special needs (for example: TS); to learn what they know about the symptomatology and the exceptional behavior of TS; and what they think about their social future. METHODS: Ninety-nine pupils participated in the study. Their mean age was 16.7 +/- 0.8 years. Forty-eight point five percent were boys, and the rest girls. They completed a questionnaire concerning knowledge and attitudes towards adolescents with special needs (diagnosed as TS). They had participated in lessons and class talks about handicapped children

Rapid pupil-based assessment of glaucomatous damage.

PURPOSE: To investigate the ability of a technique employing pupillometry and functionally-shaped stimuli to assess loss of visual function due to glaucomatous optic neuropathy. METHODS: Pairs of large stimuli, mirror images about the horizontal meridian, were displayed alternately in the upper and lower visual field. Pupil diameter was recorded and analyzed in terms of the "contrast balance" (relative sensitivity to the upper and lower stimuli), and the pupil constriction amplitude to upper and lower stimuli separately. A group of 40 patients with glaucoma was tested twice in a first session

The pupil.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To give an overview on topics of pupillary function selected according to their relevance in clinical neurology. Mainly publications of the last 3 years have been considered. RECENT FINDINGS: The discovery of photosensitive retinal ganglion cells not serving vision, but serving circadian rhythm and the pupil initiated many studies. There is evidence that pupil reaction to light might be preserved even if all rods and cones are lost. Spontaneous pupillary contractions in darkness occur in sleepy subjects and have been used to quantify the state of alertness. Apraclonidine ey

Pupillography of relative afferent pupillary defect contralateral to monocular mature cataract.

CASE REPORT: Few previous reports have documented a relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) in the eye contralateral to a dense unilateral cataract. We report pupillographic findings of a 55-year-old man with a mature cataract in the left eye and an RAPD in the right eye, whose RAPD disappeared after cataract surgery in his left eye. Using binocular infrared video pupillography, we recorded the pupillary responses of the two eyes simultaneously during an automated swinging flashlight test before and after the cataract surgery. The average contraction amplitude in both eyes was significantly

Bilateral tonic pupils with evidence of anti-hu antibodies as a paraneoplastic manifestation of small cell lung cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Ophthalmological manifestations of systemic malignancies can be either direct, metastatic or paraneoplastic. The latter are remote effects of carcinoma, often caused by autoantibodies. Ophthalmological manifestations include cancer-associated retinopathy, melanoma-associated retinopathy, opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome or motility disorders due to effects on the neurological system. A unilateral tonic pupil is usually a benign finding but has also been described in the context of paraneoplastic syndromes, in some cases associated with anti-Hu antibodies. CASE REPORTS: The authors

Social anxiety is associated with greater autonomic and visuocortical generalization of conditioned aversive responses to faces.

Aversive generalization learning is an adaptive trait that is necessary for survival in a dynamic environment. However, this process is exaggerated in persons with anxiety disorders, leading to overgeneralization of learned threat associations, hyperreactive fight-or-flight responses, and persistent avoidance. Patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) exhibit impaired conditioned threat discrimination particularly with respect to social stimuli, such as faces. The present study examined the relationship between social anxiety and generalization of visuocortical and pupil dilation responses t
