Development of artificial biomaterials by mimicking extracellular matrix of bone tissue is a promising strategy for bone regeneration. No reliable experimental data exist for the partial and total electron ionization cross sections for DNA bases, which are very crucial for modeling radiation damage in genetic material of living cell. We have measured a complete set of absolute partial electron ionization cross sections up to 500 eV for DNA bases for the first time by using the relative flow technique. SLC26A6 (also known as putative anion transporter 1 [PAT1]) is a Cl-/HCO3- exchanger expressed at the luminal membrane of enterocytes where it facilitates intestinal Cl- and fluid absorption. We have used spin labeling, fluorescence polarization, and chemical analysis to characterize membrane properties of thymocytes from mice treated with immunomodulatory drugs. The number of thymocytes was reduced 90-95% by treatment of 6-9 week old mice with hydrocortisone acetate (HCA) or methylprednisolone (both 125 mg/kg) or with cyclophosphamide (250 mg/kg). Electron spin resonance (esr) examination of thymocytes labeled with 5-nitroxyl stearic acid indicated that the membranes of cells remaining after treatment with any of these drugs were more rigid than those from saline-treated controls.

Functionalized pyrimido[4,5-b]quinoline-2,4 (1H,3H)-diones were synthesized by a three-component one-pot reaction involving barbituric acid, aldehydes, and anilines. The racemates and the enantiomers of the hexahydropyrimidin-2-ones 2a-2e which can be regarded as cyclic ureas are obtained from the racemates and the enantiomers of the barbiturates 1a-1e by reduction with LiAlH4/AlCl3. The enantiomers of 2a-2d, dextrorotatory in ethanol, possess S-configuration. In a study with rats all cyclic ureas synthesized showed sedative-hypnotic activity.
