Black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae meal improves quail growth performance.

The aim of the present study was to determine the nutritional value of black soldier fly (BSF) larvae meal for quail (experiment I) and the dose-response effects of BSF levels on growth performance, relative organ weight, and body composition of growing quails (experiment II). In experiment I, 100 35-day-old quail were distributed in a completely randomized design, with two treatments (reference and test diet) and 10 replicates. The experimental period consisted of 5 days of adaptation, followed by 5 days of total excreta collection. The experimental feed consisted of a reference diet and a te

Research Note: Diethylstilbestrol reduces primordial germ cells in male Japanese quail.

This study investigated the detrimental effects of diethylstilbestrol (DES), an estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemical, on the viability of primordial germ cells (PGCs), embryonic precursors of germ cells, in Japanese quail. We injected 50 or 100 nmol DES solubilized in sesame oil into the yolk of stage X embryos and assessed changes in the population and cell cycle properties of circulating PGCs in blood vessels and gonadal PGCs after 2.5- and 7-day incubations, respectively. Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometer and Western blotting analyses identified DEAD-box polypeptide 4 (DDX4

Embryonic development and inviability phenotype of chicken-Japanese quail F1 hybrids.

Interspecific hybrid incompatibility, including inviability and sterility, is important in speciation; however, its genetic basis remains largely unknown in vertebrates. Crosses between male chickens and female Japanese quails using artificial insemination can generate intergeneric hybrids; however, the hatching rate is low, and hatched hybrids are only sterile males. Hybrid development is arrested frequently during the early embryonic stages, and the sex ratio of living embryos is male-biased. However, the development and sex ratio of hybrid embryos have not been comprehensively analyzed. In

Hit or Miss: Fertilization Outcomes of Natural Inseminations by Japanese Quail.

Variation in fertilization success underlies sexual selection, yet mating does not guarantee fertilization. The relationship between natural inseminations and fertilization success is essential for understanding sexual selection, yet that relationship and its underlying mechanisms are poorly understood in sperm-storing vertebrates such as birds. Here the relationship is analyzed in mating trials using Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), which show striking variation in the fertilizing success of inseminations. Failures of males' inseminations to fertilize eggs were mainly due to failures prior

Assessing species-specific contributions to craniofacial development using quail-duck chimeras.

The generation of chimeric embryos is a widespread and powerful approach to study cell fates, tissue interactions, and species-specific contributions to the histological and morphological development of vertebrate embryos. In particular, the use of chimeric embryos has established the importance of neural crest in directing the species-specific morphology of the craniofacial complex. The method described herein utilizes two avian species, duck and quail, with remarkably different craniofacial morphology. This method greatly facilitates the investigation of molecular and cellular regulation of

A model for cryobanking female germplasm in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

Cryopreservation and transplantation of ovarian tissue can be used for cryobanking female germplasm of avian species. Here we report a model of cryobanking ovarian tissue of Japanese quail. Ovaries of 1-wk-old quail chicks from the recessive white-breasted (WB) line were cryopreserved using a vitrification method. The cryopreserved tissue was warmed and transplanted orthotopically into ovariectomized, 1-wk-old female quail chicks from the homozygous wild-type QO line. At sexual maturation, recipients were mated with WB males and the plumage coloration was used as a marker to determine the orig

Neural pathways mediating control of reproductive behavior in male Japanese quail.

The sexually dimorphic medial preoptic nucleus (POM) in Japanese quail has for many years been the focus of intensive investigations into its role in reproductive behavior. The present study delineates a sequence of descending pathways that finally reach sacral levels of the spinal cord housing motor neurons innervating cloacal muscles involved in reproductive behavior. We first retrogradely labeled the motor neurons innervating the large cloacal sphincter muscle (mSC) that forms part of the foam gland complex (Seiwert and Adkins-Regan [1998] Brain Behav Evol 52:61-80) and then putative premot

Spontaneous mutation in Mitf gene causes osteopetrosis in silver homozygote quail.

Silver homozygous quail was recently reported to have mutations in Mitf gene. Although numerous mutations in Mitf gene have been reported in mice, no mutations corresponding to the mutation in the homozygous silver (B/B) quail in Mitf gene have been reported to cause defects in pigmentation and bone. Therefore, we investigated the bones of the B/B homozygotes. Comparison of the bones of the B/B homozygotes with those of wild-type by X-ray examination revealed osteopetrosis in the long bones of B/B homozygotes. However, osteopetrosis in B/B homozygotes was less severe than that observed in mi/m

Fibromuscular dysplasia in intramuscular arteries of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) was found in the intramuscular arteries of both commercial (normal) and mutant (LWC) strains of Japanese quail. The mutant strain LWC is afflicted with an inherited muscular dystrophy exhibiting myotonia. The arterial lesions were classified as medial fibroplasia or medial hyperplasia, both being subtypes of medial FMD. Some lesions showed extensive proliferation of medial smooth muscle into the vascular lumen, resulting in partial occlusion of the affected blood vessel. FMD occurred more frequently in the mutant LWC quail than in the commercial strain. Ischaemic

The circadian rhythm of thermoregulation in Japanese quail. II. Multioscillator control.

Most biochemical, physiological, and behavioral processes in vertebrates show significant daily rhythms. Under constant conditions, these rhythms exhibit an endogenous periodicity around 24 h showing that they are driven by an internal circadian clock. In Japanese quail, the circadian clock driving activity and body temperature rhythms is functionally organized as a dual-oscillator system. Under certain conditions, such as switching birds from light:dark (LD) 12:12 to continuous darkness (DD), the body temperature rhythm splits into two circadian components that free-run independently before r

Isolation and characterization of three alpha-glucosidases from the Japanese quail.

We have defined one type of acid alpha-glucosidase and two types of neutral alpha-glucosidases from quail skeletal muscle on the basis of differences in the elution patterns on a DEAE-cellulose column. The appearance of the two neutral alpha-glucosidase isoenzymes was age-dependent. A decrease in acid alpha-glucosidase activity was demonstrated in Japanese quails with glycogenosis type II. The characteristics of these three alpha-glucosidase isoenzymes are described.

Quail fetal antigen (QFA): identification and comparison with chicken fetal antigen.

Quail fetal antigen (QFA), an analogous hematopoietic antigen to chicken fetal antigen (CFA), was identified and shown to be a developmental antigen on the blood cells of Japanese quail and other avian species. Rabbit antiserum against 14-day embryonic quail red blood cells (RBCs) was specifically adsorbed to achieve fetal specificity and to eliminate any cross reactivity with the CFA system. Complement-mediated microcytotoxicity and hemagglutination assays were used to detect the presence of QFA on hematopoietic cells. QFA was found on 100% of the peripheral RBCs from 10-day quail embryos but

[Pralidoxime prevents certain teratogenic effects induced by bidrin in quail embryos].

Bidrin treatment of quail embryos results in axial anomalies as well as malformations of the beak and the limbs. Whereas the administration of pralidoxime to teratogen-treated embryos prevents the appearance of the axial anomalies, the morphogenesis of the beak and limbs remains profoundly altered.

Marek's Disease in a Flock of Japanese Quails (Coturnix japonica) in Germany.

A case of increased mortality was investigated at a German farm housing Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) for egg production. Different age groups were kept in aviaries in one barn. The quail chicks had diarrhea and the adults were emaciated, some also with diarrhea and conjunctivitis. Postmortem examination showed gross tumorlike lesions in 7 of 15 adult quails examined, with ocular lesions in 2 of them. On histopathological examination, infiltrates of monomorphic round cells were found in liver, spleen, lung, and proventriculus. In the eyes of two quails, similar cells were infiltrating th

Distribution of estrogen receptors in the brain of the Japanese quail: an immunocytochemical study.

The distribution of estrogen receptors in the quail brain was investigated by immunocytochemistry using the monoclonal antibody H222SPy raised against estrogen receptors that had been isolated from a human mammary tumor. Nuclei which contained cells labeled for estrogen receptor were identified in the telencephalon, diencephalon and mesencephalon. In particular, a high percentage of labeled cells was observed in the lateral septum, the nucleus accumbens, the preoptic medial nucleus, the supraoptic nuclei, the anterior medial hypothalamus, the paraventricular magnocellular nucleus, the caudal p

Retinal modulation of the hypothalamic sensitivity to testosterone feedback in photoperiodism of quail.

This experiment was performed on two groups of male Japanese quail. One had been maintained in our laboratory as a closed colony (S-group), and the other had been obtained from a commercial source (R-group). Different responses of gonadal function were found between two groups following either testosterone treatment or exposure to short days. Immature birds of these groups responded to long days with rapid gonadal growth, but after sexual maturity, exposure to short days for 3 weeks induced testicular atrophy only in S-group. Involvement of the feedback effect of androgen in the photoperiodic
