Neuroprotective Effects of Quercetin on Ischemic Stroke: A Literature Review.

Ischemic stroke (IS) is characterized by high recurrence and disability; however, its therapies are very limited. As one of the effective methods of treating acute attacks of IS, intravenous thrombolysis has a clear time window. Quercetin, a flavonoid widely found in vegetables and fruits, inhibits immune cells from secreting inflammatory cytokines, thereby reducing platelet aggregation and limiting inflammatory thrombosis. In pre-clinical studies, it has been shown to exhibit neuroprotective effects in patients with ischemic brain injury. However, its specific mechanism of action remains unkn

Nanoformulations of curcumin and quercetin with silver nanoparticles for inactivation of bacteria.

Antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria to various types of antibiotics has resulted in the necessity of new effective strategies to get around this problem. In recent investigations, metal or metal oxide nanoparticles specifically silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been employed successfully to hinder antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. However, AgNPs at high concentrations have cytotoxicity for eukaryotic cells which, application of other biocompatible materials particularly plant secondary metabolites of curcumin and quercetin to reduce cytotoxicity is a criti

Quercetin Is a Novel Inhibitor of the Choline Kinase of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

The effectiveness of current antimicrobial methods for addressing for food-borne Gram-positive pathogens has dropped with the emergence of resistant strains. Consequently, new methods for addressing Gram-positive strains have to be developed continuously. This includes establishing novel targets for antimicrobial discovery efforts. Eukaryotic choline kinases have been highly developed as drug targets for the treatment of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, malaria and many other conditions and diseases. Recently, choline kinase (ChoK) has been proposed as a drug target for Gram-positive species gene

Quercetin promotes the recovery of iron chlorosis in strawberry plants.

Iron (Fe) chlorosis is very common in plants cultivated in calcareous soils of the Mediterranean basin and is usually corrected by the application of Fe chelates to the soil, which can have a negative impact on the environment. The aim of this experiment was to assess the role of quercetin, a natural compound widely present in plants and known to bind Fe, in correcting Fe chlorosis when supplied in the Hoagland nutrient solution. In this context, strawberry plants were grown at different Fe concentrations, with 0 (Fe0), 1 (Fe1) and 5 (Fe5) μM of Fe in the nutrient solution, until the onset of
