Anti-Neuroinflammatory Effects of Compounds Isolated from Quercus acuta Thunb. Fruits via NF-κB Signaling Inhibition in BV2 Microglia.

Aging is a major risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases in which microglia-driven neuroinflammation plays a critical role in neuronal dysfunction and disease progression. In this study, we sought to isolate bioactive metabolites from Quercus acuta Thunb. fruits-which have traditionally been used in oriental medicine but are chemically and pharmacologically underexplored-and evaluate their anti-neuroinflammatory potential. A total of 14 compounds were isolated from an ethanol extract of Q. acuta fruits through bioactivity-guided isolation, and their structures were identified by NMR spectro

Protective effects of the secondary metabolites from Quercus salicina Blume against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio) model.

To reveal the protective effect on the nephrotoxicity of Quercus salicina Blume(QS), a traditional medicine for the treatment of urolithiasis, the 50 % ethanol extract from the branches and leaves of QS was chemically studied by systematic solvent extraction and HPLC chromatography. Two phenolic acids and three flavonoids were identified by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, namely Ferulic acid (1), p-Hydroxycinnamic acid (2), Hesperidin (3), Formononetin (4), and Quercetin (5). At the same time, the gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity of zebrafish was used as a model for the first time. T

Facilitated remediation of heavy metals contaminated land using Quercus spp. with different strategies: Variations in amendments and experiment periods.

Phytoremediation using trees combined with soil amendments has gained much attention for its highly cost-effective trait. In natural field conditions, however, the results may not reflect the true performance of amendments based on short-term laboratory studies. In this three-year field trial, various soil amendments such as rice straw biochar, palygorskite, a combined biochar of rice straw biochar and palygorskite, and hydroxyapatite were used to systematically study the potential of the low-accumulator (Quercus fabri Hance) and high-accumulator (Quercus texana Buckley) for cadmium (Cd) and z

Combined Antimicrobial Activity of Extracts from Quercus infectoria Galls and Scrophularia striata Aerial Parts for an Anticariogenic Herbal Mouthwash.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is one of the most prevalent human diseases worldwide. The disease initiates with bacterial adherence to the tooth surface followed by the formation of dental plaques. Mutans streptococci and Candida albicans are principal oral microorganisms involved in the initiation and development of dental caries. Phytochemicals have been shown to possess promising antimicrobial properties against a wide range of microorganisms and can be used for the prevention and treatment of dental caries. Herein, we reviewed literature on plants that are traditionally used for their antimicr

Branch bark of holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) for reconstructing the temporal variations of atmospheric deposition of hexavalent chromium.

The bark from the annual segments of the branches of holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) is exposed to trace element deposition for a known period of time and thus it is a possible candidate as a bioindicator for reconstructing historical changes in pollution. A series of samples were analysed for Cr(VI) concentration by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ET-AAS) after selective extraction in a sodium carbonate solution. In this way the atmospheric deposition of Cr(VI) was reconstructed from 2001 to 2010 in an area where an industrial plant produced Cr(VI) compounds until 2003. The present

Changes in monoterpene emission rates of Quercus ilex infested by aphids tended by native or invasive Lasius ant species.

The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) depends on temperature and light. Other factors such as insect herbivory also may modify VOC emission. In particular, aphid feeding promotes the release of new compounds and changes the composition of plant volatile blends. Given that some aphids are tended by ants, we investigated whether ants change the emission of VOCs indirectly through attendance on aphids. The effect of Lachnus roboris aphids and two different tending ant species on terpene emission rates of 4-year-old holm oak (Quercus ilex) saplings was investigated during a field exper

The role of stem respiration in cold-acclimation of winter-dormant Quercus robur trees under large air temperature fluctuations.

Cold acclimation of leaf respiration often increases respiration rates at a given temperature after temperature declines. Whether a similar response occurs in stems and contributes to frost tolerance remains unknown. We evaluated stem CO2 efflux (Es) and cold acclimation in dormant Quercus robur trees in a climate chamber with day/night air temperatures progressively decreasing week-by-week from 20/10 °C to 5/-10 °C and then progressively increasing back to 20/10 °C over 9 weeks. Cold hardening was evidenced by lower cell damage at sub-freezing temperatures compared with trees kept in a greenh

Oak gall wasp infections of Quercus robur leaves lead to profound modifications in foliage photosynthetic and volatile emission characteristics.

Oak trees (Quercus) are hosts of diverse gall-inducing parasites, but the effects of gall formation on the physiology and biochemistry on host oak leaves is poorly understood. The influence of infection by four species from two widespread gall wasp genera, Neuroterus (N. anthracinus and N. albipes) and Cynips (C. divisa and C. quercusfolii), on foliage morphology, chemistry, photosynthetic characteristics, constitutive isoprene, and induced volatile emissions in Q. robur was investigated. Leaf dry mass per unit area (MA ), net assimilation rate per area (AA ), stomatal conductance (gs ), and c

Correspondence between genetic data and leaf morphological and anatomical traits in two Mediterranean Quercus and their hybrids along environmental gradients.

Oaks are known for their frequent hybridization, a trend that generates a wide phenotypic spectrum and produces taxonomic confusion within the genus. Different approaches are needed for hybrids characterization, such as a combination of leaf morphological and anatomical traits supported by molecular data. Here, we characterized some morphological and anatomical (veins and stomata) leaf traits and their changes across a temperature gradient of two closely related Mediterranean Quercus species (Q. faginea Lam. and Q. pyrenaica Willd.) and their hybrids, preliminarily identified from molecular ma

Inhibition of Rat 5α-Reductase Activity and Testosterone-Induced Sebum Synthesis in Hamster Sebocytes by an Extract of Quercus acutissima Cortex.

Objective. Bokusoku (BK) is an extract from the Quercus cortex used in folk medicine for treatment of skin disorders and convergence, and is present in jumihaidokuto, a traditional Japanese medicine that is prescribed for purulent skin diseases like acne vulgaris. The excess of sebum production induced by androgen is involved in the development of acne. Our aim is to examine whether BK and its constituents inhibit testosterone metabolism and testosterone-induced sebum synthesis. Methods. Measurements of 5α-reductase activity and lipogenesis were performed using rat liver microsomes and hamster

Multi-organ single-cell transcriptomic atlas identifies QrIAA14 as a candidate negative regulator of adventitious root development in Quercus robur.

Plant organ development involves coordinated cell fate transitions across multiple tissues, yet the cellular programs underlying organ-specific differentiation in woody plants remain poorly understood, particularly the mechanisms limiting efficient root development during vegetative propagation of oak species. Here, we generated a comprehensive single-cell transcriptomic landscape of leaf, stem, and root tissues of Quercus robur to resolve developmental trajectories at cellular resolution. A total of 41,471 high-quality cells were classified into 30 distinct clusters, enabling the identificati

Quercus persica lozenges versus placebo for reducing gag reflex severity in adult dental patients: a randomized double-blind controlled trial.

The gag reflex is a common challenge during dental procedures, often impairing clinical performance and causing patient discomfort. While pharmacological interventions are commonly employed, they can lead to adverse effects or be poorly tolerated. Herbal alternatives with local mucosal activity have gained increasing attention as potentially safer adjuncts. Quercus persica (Persian oak), rich in tannins, exhibits astringent and mucosal-desensitizing properties that may contribute to reducing gag reflex sensitivity. To evaluate the efficacy of a Quercus persica extract lozenge in reducing gag r
