Black and Hispanic adults travel less in motor vehicles than whites but may be at greater risk when they do travel. Passenger vehicle occupant deaths per 10 million trips among persons ages 25-64 were computed by race, Hispanic origin, gender, and socioeconomic status (SES) using 1995 data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey. Educational level was used as the indicator of SES. Blacks, particularly black men, were at increased risk of dying relative to whites when traveling in motor vehicles (rate ratio (RR) for black men=1.48; 95% co

Data from the 1982 breast cancer survey of the American College of Surgeons were used to evaluate factors related to clinical, epidemiologic, and survival differences between black and white patients. Breast cancer in blacks was not discovered as early as in whites. Distribution of pathologic types of tumors were similar for both races with the exception of medullary carcinoma, which was more frequent in blacks than in whites. Estrogen receptor-positive tumors were found significantly less frequently in blacks compared with whites. Survival was better for whites compared with blacks within eac

BACKGROUND: The risk of subsequent ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or invasive breast cancer (IBC) has been evaluated in either breast after a DCIS diagnosis; this study modeled competing risks of ipsilateral and contralateral DCIS or IBC subtypes by self-reported race.
METHODS: A cohort of 198,827 women diagnosed with primary unilateral DCIS between 2000 and 2022 was identified from the US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results tumor registries. Competing subdistributional hazard ratio (sHR) models were used to estimate DCIS or IBC laterality-associated risks overall and for the estroge

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the degree to which differences in incidence of mortality and serious adverse events exist across patient race and ethnicity among Veterans Health Administration (VHA) patients receiving outpatient opioid prescriptions and who have similar predicted risks of adverse outcomes. Patients were assigned scores via the VHA Stratification Tool for Opioid Risk Mitigation (STORM), a model used to predict the risk of experiencing overdose- or suicide-related health care events or death. Individuals with the highest STORM risk scores are targeted for case review.
DESIGN: Retrospec

BACKGROUND: Although blood pressure (BP) increases throughout young adulthood for most individuals, the age-related slope is not uniform. This study aimed to assess associations of demographic, clinical, behavioral, psychosocial, and neighborhood characteristics with age-related BP slope among 4 race-sex groups who participated in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study.
METHODS: Individuals (n=3554) aged 18 to 30 years were included in this analysis if they had normal BP at baseline and ≥2 BP measurements during the years 1985/1986 to 2015/2016. Associations of exposure va

The relationship between body mass index (BMI) and body fatness could differ according to age, sex, and race-ethnicity. We aimed to evaluate in which contexts BMI could be a good measure for body fatness compared to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) derived measures. The study population included 18,061 participants (9141 men and 8920 women) aged 18 and older who tested DXA from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 1999 to 2006, and 8107 men and 10,754 women with DXA data from Korea NHANES from 2008 to 2011 to represent the Asian population. BACKGROUND: People of color (POC) who experience race-related stress are at risk of developing mental health problems, including high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Mindfulness meditation may be especially well suited to help POC cope, given its emphasis on gaining awareness and acceptance of emotions associated with discriminatory treatment. However, mindfulness meditation rarely reaches POC, and digital approaches could reduce this treatment gap by addressing traditional barriers to care.
OBJECTIVE: This study will test the effectiveness of a self-directed app-based mindfulness

BACKGROUND: The aim was to analyze the relationship of body mass and predicted muscle mass of body segments on swimming kinematics and tethered swimming indices, and further assess the influence of those indices on 100-m front crawl performance of adolescent male swimmers.
METHODS: In 19 volunteer swimmers (age: 13.5±0.44 years, height: 168.6±7.77 cm, body mass: 56.9±10.57 kg), the predicted muscle mass of body segments was assessed with bioelectrical impedance analysis. The kinematic indices of swimming (stroke rate - SR, stroke length - SL, and stroke index - SI) were calculated from a vide

PURPOSE: The goals of this paper are to (1) provide evidence and expert consensus to support a unified approach to estimating kidney filtration in adults with stable kidney function using race-free estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in place of Cockcroft-Gault estimated creatinine clearance (C-G eCrCL) for medical and medication-related decisions, and (2) demonstrate how adjusting eGFR results for an individual's body surface area (BSA) when it is higher or lower than 1.73 m2 will improve results for medication-related decisions.
SUMMARY: C-G eCrCL is predominantly used by US pharmac

IMPORTANCE: Strict adherence to follow-up ophthalmic care after emergency department visits is critical not only for monitoring disease progression, assessing therapeutic response, and preventing avoidable complications, but also because ophthalmic examinations may provide one of the few opportunities to identify otherwise unrecognized systemic disease.
OBJECTIVE: To identify variables associated with loss to follow-up (LTFU) care after emergency department ophthalmology consultations, and to characterize similarities and differences between self-reported race.

Preoperative evaluation identifies unique patient characteristics with an impact on perioperative care. Sex-based differences in cardiovascular disease are particularly important. Diseases in women can go unrecognized and yet have long-term implications for cardiovascular risk. Peripartum cardiomyopathy and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy affect cardiovascular risk in young women long after pregnancy. Sex-hormone therapy in women, men, and transgender patients carries minimal perioperative risk, except in select patients at high risk for venous thromboembolism. The unique challenges facing

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) and sepsis are significant causes of disease burden and mortality among the elderly population of the USA. HF causes fluid overload, which complicates the treatment approach when patients develop sepsis necessitating fluid resuscitation. While individual disease states have been studied extensively, the trends in mortality for concurrent sepsis and HF are not well known.
METHODS: Mortality trends due to sepsis and HF in individuals aged 65 and older in the USA from 1999 to 2019 were analyzed using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-ranging Onlin

Patients anticipating surgery and anesthesia often need preoperative care to lower risk and facilitate services on the day of surgery. Preparing patients often requires extensive evaluation and coordination of care. Vulnerable, marginalized, and disenfranchised populations have special concerns, limitations, and needs. These patients may have unidentified or poorly managed comorbidities. Underrepresented minorities and transgender patients may avoid or have limited access to health care. Homelessness, limited health literacy, and incarceration hinder perioperative optimization initiatives. Ide

Cross-sectional and longitudinal research has shown that race-related stress is associated with increased depressive symptoms among racial/ethnic minorities. Rumination has long been considered a maladaptive self-regulatory response to race-related stress, and growing evidence suggests that it may be an important link in the relation between race-related stress and depression. More adaptive forms of self-regulation, such as active coping, may counteract the negative impact of rumination. We examined the influence of rumination on the relation between race-related stress and depressive symptoms

Skin research and technology : official journal of International Society for Bioengineering and the Skin (ISBS) [and] International Society for Digital Imaging of Skin (ISDIS) [and] International Society for Skin Imaging (ISSI)2017eng
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: We hypothesized that reported race-related differences in skin properties cause skin and skin-to-fat water differences among races that are measureable by skin tissue dielectric constant (TDC) values that depend strongly on water content. Our first aim was to test this hypothesis. Also, since inter-side TDC ratios are used to assess edema and lymphedema, the second aim was to test if TDC ratios are race-dependent. The third aim was to determine the extent to which TDC depends on total body water (TBW) and fat (TBF).
METHODS: Tissue dielectric constant was measured to 1.5 o

OBJECTIVES: Prevention of horse-related injuries is considered difficult because horse behavior is unpredictable. Therefore, risk factors for injuries related to professional horse racing need to be investigated. We conducted a study to determine whether body mass index (BMI) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels are associated with professional horse racing-related injuries.
METHODS: A baseline healthy survey of 546 male grooms and exercise riders aged 40-70 yr working at Miho Training Center, the largest racing-horse training facility in Japan, was performed in May 2003. A total of 93

Musculoskeletal injury remains a major welfare and performance concern in Thoroughbred racing, and biomarkers for early risk stratification are of scientific interest. This multicentre observational cohort study characterised serum concentrations of two bone turnover markers, osteocalcin/BGLAP (OC) and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-I), in 1359 fit-to-race Thoroughbred racehorses sampled across New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia. Biomarker distributions, population-wide percentile ranges, demographic and training-related associations, and short-term soundness outc

INTRODUCTION: Mortality related to alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) has been increasing over the past two decades, especially in racial and ethnic minorities and those living in rural areas. The interaction between rurality, race and ethnicity in mortality disparities is unclear.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study extracted data from the Underlying Cause of Death database of CDC Wide-Ranging Online Database for Epidemiological Research (1999-2022). We estimated the age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) for ALD among adults 25 years and older. We calculated the average annual percentage
