A meta-analysis of the hepatitis C virus distribution in diverse racial/ethnic drug injector groups.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is mostly transmitted through blood-to-blood contact during injection drug use via shared contaminated syringes/needles or injection paraphernalia. This paper used meta-analytic methods to assess whether HCV prevalence and incidence varied across different racial/ethnic groups of injection drug users (IDUs) sampled internationally. The 29 prevalence and 11 incidence studies identified as part of the HCV Synthesis Project were categorized into subgroups based on similar racial/ethnic comparisons. The effect estimate used was the odds or risk ratio comparing HCV prevalenc

Risk factors associated with preterm deliveries among racial groups in a national sample of married mothers.

Seven sociodemographic and behavioral factors that may explain the increased risk of preterm deliveries among black women were examined using data from a national sample of 5823 married mothers who responded to the 1980 National Natality Survey (NNS) Questionnaire. There was a twofold increase in the rate of preterm deliveries among black women. Additionally, there was a significant decrease (by 1 week) in the mean gestational age in black mothers (p less than 0.0001) compared with white mothers. The two groups were similar with respect to smoking and age; however, there were significant diffe

Variations in the genomic profiles and clinical behavior of meningioma by racial and ethnic group.

OBJECTIVE: The influence of socioeconomic factors on racial disparities among patients with sporadic meningiomas is well established, yet other potential causative factors warrant further exploration. The authors of this study aimed to determine whether there is significant variation in the genomic profile of meningiomas among patients of different races and ethnicities and its correlation with clinical outcomes. METHODS: The demographic, genomic, and clinical data of patients aged 18 years and older who had undergone surgery for sporadic meningioma between September 2008 and November 2021 we

Developmental Psychopathology in a Racial/Ethnic Minority Group: Are Cultural Risks Relevant?

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined (a) the mediating role of parenting behaviors in the relationship between parental risks and youth antisocial behaviors (YASB), and (b) the role of youth cultural stress in a racial/ethnic minority group (i.e., Puerto Rican [PR] youth). METHOD: This longitudinal study consisted of 3 annual interviews of PR youth (N = 1,150; aged 10-14 years at wave 1) and their caretakers from the South Bronx (SB) in New York City and from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Parents reported on parental risks, parenting behaviors, and YASB. Youth also self-reported on YASB and youth c

Racial Group Differences in NREM Sleep Physiology Contribute to Memory Vulnerability.

OBJECTIVE: Racial sleep disparities may lead to long-term cognitive health consequences, with a specific impact on memory formation and maintenance. Few studies have examined the physiological sleep features, including nonrapid eye movement (NREM) stage 2 and 3 sleep and the corresponding electroencephalographic activity indicative of these stages (ie, delta oscillations 0.5 to 4 Hz), that are sensitive to racial stress and result in memory vulnerability, which is the goal of this investigation. METHODS: We assessed self-report and polysomnographic indices of sleep, psychosocial outcomes, and

Exploring Demographic Differences in Postintubation Analgesia by Racial Group, Sex, and Age.

BACKGROUND: After rapid sequence intubation (post-RSI), patients require analgesia to ensure adequate pain management; however, extant research suggests that in other medical procedures, there are demographic differences in analgesic prescribing. OBJECTIVES: We examined potential sociodemographic differences in post-RSI opioid prescribing across a Med-Atlantic healthcare system. We hypothesized that Black (vs. White), female (vs. male), and older (vs. younger) patients would receive lower opioid doses post-RSI. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of all intubated adults (analy

Acceptability of contraceptive-induced amenorrhea in a racially diverse group of US women.

OBJECTIVE: The study was conducted to determine women's preferences about menstrual bleeding patterns and their willingness to manipulate bleeding with contraception. STUDY DESIGN: Women presenting for routine obstetric and gynecologic care at two US locations (Portland, OR, and Atlanta, GA) were offered a self-administered, anonymous survey. A validated survey tool was used. RESULTS: Valid surveys from 292 women were obtained. Mean age was 27 years (SD 8.0). We were unable to separate geographic vs. racial differences in responses because race significantly differed between sites (p<.001).

Perspectives on treatment decision-making across racial groups in adults with degenerative lumbar disease - A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Degenerative lumbar spine disease significantly impairs quality of life, yet racial and socioeconomic disparities in surgical treatment persist, particularly among BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color) patients, who often experience worse outcomes and are less likely to undergo surgery despite similar or higher pain levels. OBJECTIVES: This study explored factors that influence treatment decisions among BIPOC and Non-Hispanic White (NHW) patients with degenerative lumbar spine disease, with a focus on understanding how these factors may contribute to disparities in sur

Cardiology Encounters for Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Groups with Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Borderline Cardiovascular Disease Risk.

BACKGROUND: Underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (UREGs) with HIV have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared with the general population. Referral to a cardiovascular specialist improves CVD risk factor management in high-risk individuals. However, patient and provider factors impacting the likelihood of UREGs with HIV to have an encounter with a cardiologist are unknown. METHODS: We evaluated a cohort of UREGs with HIV and borderline CVD risk (10-year risk ≥ 5% by the pooled cohort equations or ≥ 7.5% by Framingham risk score). Participants received HIV-related care fro

Early Pregnancy Blood Pressure Patterns Identify Risk of Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy Among Racial and Ethnic Groups.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading cause of severe maternal morbidity and mortality and confer 4-fold higher perinatal mortality in Black women. Early pregnancy blood pressure patterns may differentiate risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. METHODS: This study identified distinct blood pressure trajectories from 0 to 20 weeks' gestation to evaluate subsequent pregnancy-related hypertension in a retrospective cohort of 174 925 women with no prior hypertension or history of preeclampsia, prenatal care entry ≤14 weeks, and a stillborn or live singleton birth del

Impact of Primary Care Physician Interaction on Longitudinal Adherence to Screening Mammography Across Different Racial/Ethnic Groups.

PURPOSE: Regular contact with a primary care physician (PCP) is associated with increased participation in screening mammography. Older studies suggested that PCP interaction may have a smaller effect on screening mammography uptake among racial and ethnic minorities compared with whites, but there is limited contemporary evidence about the effect of PCP interaction on screening mammography uptake across different racial and ethnic groups. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between PCP contact and longitudinal adherence with screening mammography guidelines over a 10-yea

Co-Occurrence of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Cardiovascular Disease Among Ethnic/Racial Groups in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma and/or symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been linked to the onset of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the exact mechanism has not been determined. We examine whether the risk of CVD is different among those who have a history of trauma without PTSD symptoms, those who have experienced trauma and developed any symptoms of PTSD, and those with a PTSD diagnosis. Furthermore, we examine whether this association varies across ethnic/racial groups. METHODS: We used two data sets that form part of the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys - the Nationa

Disparities in Cardiac Rehabilitation Among Individuals from Racial and Ethnic Groups and Rural Communities-A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Despite the well-described benefits of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on long-term health outcomes, CR is a resource that is underutilized by a significant proportion of patients that suffer from cardiovascular diseases. The main purpose of this study was to examine disparities in CR referral and participation rates among individuals from rural communities and racial and ethnic minority groups with coronary heart disease (CHD) when compared to the general population. METHODS: A systematic search of standard databases including MedlLine, PubMed, and Cochrane databases was conducted using

Self-reported acne severity, treatment, and belief patterns across multiple racial and ethnic groups in adolescent students.

Acne vulgaris is a common condition among adolescents regardless of age, gender, and race. We compare the frequency, severity, help-seeking behavior, treatment, and beliefs about acne among students based on race, ethnicity, gender, and age. Anonymous surveys were administered to 1,214 students aged 10-19 years of varied gender, race, and ethnicity in public middle and high schools in New Jersey. Results showed the frequency and severity of acne were high (76% and 65%, respectively) and more prevalent in white compared to non-white respondents (RR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.04-1.24 and RR = 1.22, 95%
