Addressing health inequity is now recognized as a clinical competency in medical education. We examined the career and writings of Robert Wilson Jr. (1867-1946), longtime dean of the Medical College of the State of South Carolina during the Jim Crow Era, using primary and secondary sources within the context of systemic and structural racism, particularly in South Carolina. Wilson used public health data to refute the "Black Extinction Hypothesis" rooted in social Darwinism. He challenged assumptions of inherent Black susceptibility to tuberculosis, linking disease instead to social determinan

While research suggests that sexual racism is prevalent within the gay community, studies have neglected to examine how this specific manifestation of racism influences queer Asian American men's mental health. Queer Asian American men's health outcomes are often overlooked as racism-related studies tend to homogenize queer Asian American men with queer men of color broadly. Thus, the present study examined the association between sexual racism and queer Asian American men's depressive symptomatology and hazardous drinking, as well as the moderating role of collective racial self-esteem. The American Psychological Association's resolutions on dismantling systemic racism represent a watershed moment in our discipline, yet confusion remains as to what it means to "dismantle" racism given psychology's emphasis on changing individual beliefs. This submission will review the tension between "idealist" interpretations of critical race theory emphasizing individual beliefs and "realist" perspectives contextualizing racism within political economic arrangements. Psychology's adoption of an "idealist" framework will be shown to privilege a neoliberal project emphasizing individual chan

Racial inequities in health are vast and well-documented, particularly regarding maternal and infant health. Sleep health, including but not limited to duration and quality, is central to overall health and well-being. However, research has not adequately addressed how racism embedded in structures and systems, in addition to individual experiences, may affect maternal health by impacting sleep. In this critical review, we aim to 1) synthesize findings, emphasizing collaborative studies within our group, 2) highlight gaps in knowledge, and 3) propose a theoretical framework and methodological

BACKGROUND: The present pandemic COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2, a single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus from the Coronaviridae family. Due to a lack of antiviral drugs, vaccines against the virus are urgently required.
METHODS: In this study, validated computational approaches were used to identify peptide-based epitopes from six structural proteins having antigenic properties. The Net-CTL 1.2 tool was used for the prediction of CD8+ T-cell epitopes, while the robust tools Bepi-Pred 2 and LBtope was employed for the identification of linear B-cell epitopes. Docking studies of the identi

Special Issue - Race reconciled II: Interpreting and communicating biological variation and race in 2021 Many sociocultural factors, like poverty and trauma, or homelessness versus a safe neighborhood, can get "under our skin" and affect our lives. These factors may also get "into our genes" through epigenetic changes that influence how genes are expressed. Changes in gene expression can further influence how we respond to sociocultural factors and how those factors impact our physical and mental health, creating a feedback loop between our sociocultural environment and our genome.

Journal of clinical child and adolescent psychology : the official journal for the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, American Psychological Association, Division 532003eng
Examined the relations among perceived racism and externalizing symptoms, internalizing symptoms, hopelessness, and self-concept in African American boys (N = 84). The experience of racism is a complex phenomenon that has been found to have negative psychological outcomes in adult studies of African Americans. There has been a gap in the empirical literature regarding the possible associations between perceived racism and children's psychological well-being. This study is an attempt to address that gap. Results demonstrated that experiences of racism were related to self- and parent-reported e

IMPORTANCE: Black, Indigenous, and Latino communities are disproportionately affected by the US overdose epidemic. Structural inequalities, encompassing social, economic, and infrastructural dimensions, have been increasingly theorized as fundamental drivers of these disparities.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether there is an association between neighborhood-level structural racism and opioid-involved overdose deaths in an urban area.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This ecological serial cross-sectional study of 796 census tracts (2017-2019) and 792 census tracts (2020-2022) in Chicago, I

Background. Racism is ingrained within the Canadian healthcare system, resulting in health inequities for Black, Indigenous, and people of colour (BIPOC) service users, healthcare workers, and students. Occupational therapy students spend a large amount of their training with fieldwork educators within these environments. Purpose. Explore the experiences of occupational therapy fieldwork educators in relation to supporting students witnessing or experiencing racism during fieldwork education. Method. Using an interpretive description research design, with a semi-structured interview guide, we

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to determine the linkage between multidimensional structural racism typologies and preterm birth (PTB), low birthweight (LBW), and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) birth among infants of White, US-born Black, and foreign-born Black pregnant people in Minnesota.
DATA SOURCES: The measures of structural racism were based on the 2017 American Community Survey 5-year estimates and the 2017 jail incarceration data from the Vera Institute of Justice. Birth outcomes of infants born in 2018 were based on birth records from the Minnesota Department of Health.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of mental health service users views is important in service planning, to ensure access for everyone and in particular for those in minority groups. Depression is common in older people and it has been suggested that ethnic elders may be more vulnerable to mental illness. This study therefore explored and compared the views of White British (WB) and Black African-Caribbean (BC) older people on depression as an illness, avenues of help and the place of mental health services.
METHODS: A qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews using vignettes describing an older

OBJECTIVE: Black individuals in Western countries face disproportionately high rates of depression, exacerbated in recent years by sociopolitical and structural stressors. The present study examines the associations between racism-across recent, lifetime, and stress-related domains-and depressive symptoms among Black Americans. By introducing thwarted belongingness as a potential moderator, the study aims to expand existing literature by exploring how social disconnection may intensify the psychological impact of racism and contribute to elevated depression risk.
METHODS: A total of 314 Black

PURPOSE: Black communities face high rates of unmanaged pain due to anti-Black racism in the healthcare system. However, a gap currently exists in the understanding of how anti-Black racism impacts pain management conversations (ie where a pain management plan is discussed with a healthcare professional) with youth in Canada. The purpose of this study was to gain a rich understanding of the experiences of anti-Black racism in a group of Black youth and their caregivers who had pain management conversations with healthcare professionals.

OBJECTIVES: To understand place-based drivers of racial disparities in stroke mortality in the United States by investigating the relationship between county-level measures of structural racism and racial disparities in stroke mortality.
METHODS: We constructed an additive structural racism score from census-based indicators of racial disproportionality (income, poverty, unemployment, home ownership, education, health insurance) and residential segregation (evenness, isolation), as well as county-level jail incarceration data from the Vera Institute of Justice. We utilized age-standardized, s

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental disorders (PMD) affect birthing persons during pregnancy and postpartum. While racial and ethnic differences are documented, how structural racism influences these differences remains understudied.
METHODS: To estimate associations between the index of concentration at the extremes (ICE) -a proxy for anti-Black structural racism- and hospital-reported PMD, we analyzed data from a population-based cohort of all California live hospital births, 1997 to 2018 (N = 10,155, 036). PMD outcomes were identified from hospital discharge records throughout the perinatal perio

Examinations highlighting interpersonal racism-related experiences as risk factors for substance use are well documented, particularly for alcohol use. The associations between racism-related experiences across other levels of influence (e.g., historical trauma, online, internalized) and use of other types of substances, while emerging, have yielded mixed findings. The present systematic review and meta-analyses examined the associations between multilevel racism-related experiences and different types of substances including substance use overall, alcohol, binge drinking, tobacco/nicotine, ca

The legacy of racism toward Native Americans is far-reaching. We will review the topic using the conceptual model of racism as a form of violence as it is inherent in racism, as are prejudice and power. Using the basic frameworks of racism as internalized, interpersonal, institutional, and structural, we will discuss the many types of racism affecting Native Americans today. Racism is the bedrock of generations of trauma experienced in Native communities. The generational/historical trauma of racism has led to epigenetic-level changes affecting Native American people today. We will cover the h

Substantial health disparities exist across race/ethnicity in the USA, with Black Americans often most affected. The current COVID-19 pandemic is no different. While there have been ample studies describing racial disparities in COVID-19 outcomes, relatively few have established an empirical link between these disparities and structural racism. Such empirical analyses are critically important to help defuse "victim-blaming" narratives about why minority communities have been badly hit by COVID-19. In this paper, we explore the empirical link between structural racism and disparities in county-

The Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) continues to devastate the world and the United States remains number one of reported COVID-19 cases and deaths. Research demonstrates that Blacks and Hispanics in the United States are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, especially among highly marginalized people at the intersection of immigration and incarceration. Social distancing is a privilege and contact tracing is a deterrent for historically oppressed populations. Public health professionals have attempted a multicausal approach to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, but they have been unsu
