The effects of therapeutic radiation on colonic mucosa.

Low to moderate doses of therapeutic irradiation are capable of producing bizarre cytologic changes in the mucosal cells of colorectal crypts. This may be associated with eosinophilia of the lamina propria and with eosinophilic crypt abscesses. The bizarre cells generally line intact crypts and do not exhibit invasive behavior. The change subsides within 1-2 months at the dose levels studied (approximately 2000 rads).

Radiation Dermatitis: Radiation-Induced Effects on the Structural and Immunological Barrier Function of the Epidermis.

An important hallmark of radiation dermatitis is the impairment of the mitotic ability of the stem/progenitor cells in the basal cell layers due to radiation-induced DNA damage, leading to suppressed cell renewal in the epidermis. However, this mechanism alone does not adequately explain the complex pathogenesis of radiation-induced skin injury. In this review, we summarize the latest findings on the complex pathogenesis of radiation dermatitis and correlate these with the clinical features of radiation-induced skin reactions. The current studies show that skin exposure to ionizing radiation i

Biological Effects of Sunlight, Ultraviolet Radiation, Visible Light, Infrared Radiation and Vitamin D for Health.

Humans evolved in sunlight and had depended on sunlight for its life giving properties that was appreciated by our early ancestors. However, for more than 40 years the lay press and various medical and dermatology associations have denounced sun exposure because of its association with increased risk for skin cancer. The goal of this review is to put into perspective the many health benefits that have been associated with exposure to sunlight, ultraviolet A (UVA) ultraviolet B (UVB), visible and infrared radiation.

Effect of radiation protection apron defect on radiation dose during fluoroscopy.

Occupational exposure should be minimised to a level that is as low as reasonably achievable. Radiation protection aprons and thyroid collars are effective in reducing occupational radiation dose as they typically attenuate at least 90% of scattered radiation. However, cracks and holes may compromise the shielding capacity of the apron. The aim of the study was to quantify change in radiation dose behind defects to support the development of rejection criteria for damaged aprons. Air kerma rates were measured with a calibrated solid-state dosimeter behind a 0.25 mm Pb-equivalent apron containi

[Effect of ultraviolet radiation on the immune system and the effect of exogenous photochemoprotecive agents on the ultraviolet radiation induced immunosuppression].

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) of the UVB- and UVA-region suppresses immunity and in the dose relation manner it induces cutaneous or systemic state of immunotolerance. It was proved by the successful experimental transplantation of a tumor graft to the skin of UV-radiated animals and on the other side by unsuccessful attempts at skin contact-sensitization. UVR induces this condition either by direct inhibition of antigen-presentating function of the Langerhans cells, or indirectly by the stimulation of secretion of immunomodulatory cytokines in keratinocytes. UVR inhibits also functions of the n

Radiation-induced Brain Injury and the Radiation Late Effects Cohort (RLEC) of Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta).

In the event of a nuclear accident or attack, thousands of people could receive high doses of total-body irradiation (TBI). Although retrospective analyses of atomic bomb and nuclear disaster survivors have been conducted, the long-term outcomes on the brain and cognitive function are conflicting. Radiation-induced brain injury (RIBI) is characterized by inflammation, vascular injury, deficits in neuronal function, and white matter (WM) injury, but the molecular mechanisms by which this occurs remain unknown. Animal models are crucial for evaluating radiation effects on the brain and have prov

Radiation and CNS effects: summary of evidence from a recent symposium of the Radiation Research Society.

This article summarizes a Symposium on 'Radiation risks of the central nervous system' held virtually at the 67th Annual Meeting of the Radiation Research Society, 3-6 October 2021. Repeated low-dose radiation exposure over a certain period could lead to reduced neuronal proliferation, altered neurogenesis, neuroinflammation and various neurological complications, including psychological consequences, necessitating further research in these areas. Four speakers from radiation biology, genetics and epidemiology presented the latest data from their studies seeking insights into this important to

Dosimetry for quantitative analysis of the effects of low-dose ionizing radiation in radiation therapy patients.

We have developed and validated a practical approach to identifying the location on the skin surface that will receive a prespecified biopsy dose (ranging down to 1 cGy) in support of in vivo biological dosimetry in humans. This represents a significant technical challenge since the sites lie on the patient's surface outside the radiation fields. The PEREGRINE Monte Carlo simulation system was used to model radiation dose delivery, and TLDs were used for validation on phantoms and for confirmation during patient treatment. In the developmental studies, the Monte Carlo simulations consistently

[Electrosmog, cellular phones, sunbeds etc. -- adverse health effects from radiation? Health aspects of non-ionizing radiation].

This review supplies a survey of the three physical influences, i. e. UV radiation, high-frequency electromagnetic fields of radio telephone systems and other wireless radio applications as well as low-frequency fields of electric power supply. The exposure to UV radiation must be considered to be by far the highest health risk. The annual rate of about 2000 deaths from skin cancer in Germany, mainly caused by extensive exposure to solar UV radiation, demands protective measures. Teaching reasonable behaviour is the supreme issue. Recommended protective measures in the order of their effective

The influence of photosynthetically active radiation on the effects of ultraviolet-B radiation on Arabidopsis thaliana.

Ultraviolet-B (UVB; 280-320 nm) radiation is a small but biologically significant portion of the solar spectrum reaching the earth's surface. Research interests have been fostered because UVB has been increasing in recent years due to depletion of stratospheric ozone. Ultraviolet-B that penetrates into plant tissue may damage important cellular macromolecules. Although there has been considerable research on the effects of UVB on plants, the influence of the level of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR; 400-700 nm) on effects of UVB requires further definition as a prelude to studies of U

[Radiology and radiation protection in dental medicine. 1: Biological effects resulting from exposure to ionizing radiation].

The different types of biological effects produced by ionizing radiations are reviewed. Among the early effects following an acute exposure, the bone marrow syndrome and the intestinal syndrome are briefly described. They are unlikely to appear in the current conditions encountered in dental radiology. As far as skin exposure is concerned (e.g. fingers, hands), acute reactions (moist desquamation, ulceration, etc.) require high doses which are encountered only in accidental conditions. However, chronic dermatitis after repeated low dose exposure is one of the major risks in dental radiology (e

Management of ionizing radiation injuries and illnesses, Part 3: Radiobiology and health effects of ionizing radiation.

Ionizing radiation exposure can induce profound changes in intracellular components, potentially leading to diverse health effects in exposed individuals. Any cellular component can be damaged by radiation, but some components affect cellular viability more profoundly than others. The ionization caused by radiation lasts longer than the initial inciting incident, continuing as 1 ionization incident causes another. In some cases, damage to DNA can lead to cellular death at mitosis. In other cases, activation of the genetic machinery can lead to a genetic cascade potentially leading to mutations
