Gabor filters and phase portraits for the detection of architectural distortion in mammograms.

Architectural distortion is a subtle abnormality in mammograms, and a source of overlooking errors by radiologists. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) techniques can improve the performance of radiologists in detecting masses and calcifications; however, most CAD systems have not been designed to detect architectural distortion. We present a new method to detect and localise architectural distortion by analysing the oriented texture in mammograms. A bank of Gabor filters is used to obtain the orientation field of the given mammogram. The curvilinear structures (CLS) of interest (spicules and fibro

Registration and difference analysis of corresponding mammogram images.

An automated technique is proposed for identifying differences between corresponding mammogram images. The technique recovers an approximate deformation between a pair of mammograms based on identifying corresponding features across the two images. The registration process is completed using an unwarping technique for transforming one image into the coordinate system of the other. A difference image is generated using intensity-weighted subtraction in order to identify regions of large difference. Evaluation of the technique is performed using 124 bilateral image pairs which contain a total of

Quantitative comparison of 68-keV monoenergetic, routine-dose, and low-dose 120-kVp CT for calcium-mimicking inserts in thoracic phantoms: effects of phantom size and reconstruction method.

OBJECTIVE: 68-keV monoenergetic images from dual-energy CT are often compared with conventional 120-kVp CT, but quantitative performance may depend on phantom size, reconstruction method, and dose settings. We performed a technical phantom-based comparison of 68-keV monoenergetic, routine-dose, and low-dose 120-kVp CT for calcium-mimicking inserts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this phantom study, a thorax phantom with a cardiac calcification insert was scanned using routine-dose 120-kVp CT, low-dose 120-kVp CT, and dual-energy CT with 68-keV monoenergetic reconstruction. Small- and large-phantom

A unified multi-task framework enables interpretable chest radiograph analysis.

BACKGROUND: While multimodal deep learning has advanced medical imaging analysis, existing black-box systems may remain confined to isolated tasks, often overlooking the trust-sensitive nature of clinical diagnosis as a multi-task process. METHODS: We propose IMT-CXR (interpretable multi-task transformer for chest X-ray analysis), a framework that emulates radiologists' diagnostic workflow through three evidence-driven stages: (1) disease recognition, (2) attribute characterization (e.g., size, location, and severity quantification), and (3) evidence-integrated report generation with traceabl

Symmetric Siamese Networks for Longitudinal Chest Radiograph Change Detection: A Leakage-Controlled Study on MIMIC-CXR.

Background/Objectives: Radiologists usually read a chest radiograph by comparing it with an earlier one, yet most deep learning models are trained and tested on single images. This study measures how much a longitudinal pair of radiographs improves finding-specific change detection on MIMIC-CXR and tests whether the gain can be explained by encoder pretraining. Methods: One frontal pair per patient was built from the earliest and latest studies within 180 days (14,043 pairs), and paired CheXpert labels defined four transition classes: absent-to-absent, onset, resolved, and persistent. A Siames

Enhancing automated fracture detection in paediatric wrist X-rays with paired and unpaired cast suppression methods.

PURPOSE: Casts in follow-up wrist X-rays reduce diagnostic image quality, complicating the assessment of fracture healing. This study developed cast suppression models using real unpaired data and synthetic paired data and investigated their impact on automated fracture detection performance in paediatric wrist X-rays. METHODS: A cast suppression model was developed using data generated with unpaired image-to-image translation methods. A published CycleGAN model was repurposed to generate a synthetic paired dataset from an institutional collection of 31,001 X-rays. This dataset was used to tr

MSF-Swin-ICFNet: An Image-Derived Multi-Scale Swin Transformer Framework with Cross-Scale Feature Fusion for Breast Lesion Classification and Segmentation in Mammograms.

Background: Accurate breast lesion classification and localization from mammograms remain challenging because lesions vary in size, morphology, density, contrast, and boundary clarity. This study proposes MSF-Swin-ICFNet, an image-derived Multi-Scale Swin Transformer framework with Image-Derived Cross-Scale Fusion (ICF) for joint benign-malignant classification and lightweight lesion localization. Methods: The proposed framework extracts hierarchical representations from four Swin Transformer stages and aligns, adaptively recalibrates, and fuses these multi-scale features into a shared represe

Improving CXR Bone Suppression by Exploiting Domain-Level and Instance-Level Information.

For chest X-ray image (CXR) analysis, effective bone structure suppression is essential for uncovering lung abnormalities and facilitating accurate clinical diagnoses. While recent deep generative models, to some extent, improve the reconstruction quality of bone-suppressed CXRs, they often fall short in delivering substantial improvements in downstream diagnosis tasks. This limitation is attributed to a narrow focus on instance-specific details, neglecting broader domain-level knowledge, which hampers bone-suppression effectiveness. In response to these challenges, our proposed framework adop

Analysis of Prostate Deformation during a Course of Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer.

PURPOSE: Accurate analysis of the correlation between deformation of the prostate and displacement of its center of gravity (CoG) is important for efficient radiation therapy for prostate cancer. In this study, we addressed this problem by introducing a new analysis approach. METHOD: A planning computed tomography (CT) scan and 7 repeat cone-beam CT scans during the course of treatment were obtained for 19 prostate cancer patients who underwent three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy. A single observer contoured the prostate gland only. To evaluate the local deformation of the prostate,

Evaluation of a computed radiography system for megavoltage photon beam dosimetry.

Computed radiography (CR) systems have been gaining adoption as digital replacements for film for diagnostic and therapy imaging. As a result, film processors are being removed from service, leaving a void for the medical physicists who use film and processors for two-dimensional mega-voltage beam dosimetry. This is the first report to evaluate the ability of a commercial CR reader and storage phosphor plate system to accurately quantitate absolute dose and dose distributions from a 6 MV photon beam. There are potential advantages and disadvantages of current CR systems compared to film system

Automated segmentation refinement of small lung nodules in CT scans by local shape analysis.

One of the most important problems in the segmentation of lung nodules in CT imaging arises from possible attachments occurring between nodules and other lung structures, such as vessels or pleura. In this report, we address the problem of vessels attachments by proposing an automated correction method applied to an initial rough segmentation of the lung nodule. The method is based on a local shape analysis of the initial segmentation making use of 3-D geodesic distance map representations. The correction method has the advantage that it locally refines the nodule segmentation along recognized

Primal-dual convex optimization in large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping: LDDMM meets robust regularizers.

This paper proposes a method for primal-dual convex optimization in variational large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping problems formulated with robust regularizers and robust image similarity metrics. The method is based on Chambolle and Pock primal-dual algorithm for solving general convex optimization problems. Diagonal preconditioning is used to ensure the convergence of the algorithm to the global minimum. We consider three robust regularizers liable to provide acceptable results in diffeomorphic registration: Huber, V-Huber and total generalized variation. The Huber norm is used i

Three-dimensional digital displays in congenital dislocation of the hip: preliminary experience.

Four patients with congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH) were studied on a research basis with three-dimensional computed tomography (3-D CT) or, alternatively, with three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (3-D MR). 3-D CT and 3-D MR proved useful in demonstrating the extent of anterior and posterior acetabular coverage. 3-D CT was limited to patients greater than 6 months of age with ossified femoral heads. 3-D MR, in contrast to 3-D CT, demonstrated the cartilaginous femoral head in children less than 6 months of age, while avoiding gonadal irradiation. Both 3-D CT and 3-D MR appear p

Direct Segmentation of Mammography and Tomosynthesis Sinograms for Lesion Localization.

Background: The Detection and localization of breast lesions remain challenging in mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) due to tissue overlap and information loss during volumetric reconstruction. Sinograms preserve the full angular projection data acquired during scanning, enabling analysis of tissue structure without reconstruction. Methods: This study proposes a direct segmentation approach for mammography and DBT sinograms using a U-Net architecture. Experiments were conducted on 1082 annotated mammography mass images from the CBIS-DDSM dataset (521 benign, 561 malignant) and

XVertNet: Unsupervised Contrast Enhancement of Vertebral Structures with Dynamic Self-Tuning Guidance and Multi-Stage Analysis.

Chest X-ray is one of the main diagnostic tools in emergency medicine, yet its limited ability to capture fine anatomical details can result in missed or delayed diagnoses. To address this, we introduce XVertNet, a novel deep-learning framework designed to enhance vertebral structure visualization in X-ray images significantly. Our framework introduces two key innovations: (1) an unsupervised learning architecture that eliminates reliance on manually labeled training data-a persistent bottleneck in medical imaging, and (2) a dynamic self-tuned internal guidance mechanism featuring an adaptive

Software-assisted bone thickness evaluation in patients with syndromic craniosynostosis undergoing Le Fort III osteotomy: a technical note.

The aim of this study was to assess the value of the use of software for the preoperative evaluation of cranial bone thickness in syndromic patients undergoing Le Fort III osteotomy. Four patients were evaluated preoperatively to determine whether they were eligible for distraction osteogenesis. Data from the computed tomography scans was evaluated using advanced reverse engineering tools to determine the temporal bone thickness. Three patients showed adequate values for the positioning of a rigid external distractor device (average thickness values >3.5 mm), while one patient showed insuffici

Deep learning applied to automatic disease detection using chest X-rays.

Deep learning (DL) has shown rapid advancement and considerable promise when applied to the automatic detection of diseases using CXRs. This is important given the widespread use of CXRs across the world in diagnosing significant pathologies, and the lack of trained radiologists to report them. This review article introduces the basic concepts of DL as applied to CXR image analysis including basic deep neural network (DNN) structure, the use of transfer learning and the application of data augmentation. It then reviews the current literature on how DNN models have been applied to the detection

The usefulness of magnification in postgastric magnetopathy.

Magnification of a radiographic image using the PACS magnification tool or a magnifying glass can establish that an apparently cylindrical foreign body in the abdomen is actually several magnets attached to one another. There are several reports of abdominal complications from the presence of more than one magnet lying beyond the stomach (postgastric magnetopathy). Such groups of attached magnets have been mistaken for solitary cylinders, and this potential misinterpretation also occurred at initial viewing of images from two of seven of our patients with this condition. Because there is gener

Assessing the utility of low resolution brain imaging: treatment of infant hydrocephalus.

As low-field MRI technology is being disseminated into clinical settings around the world, it is important to assess the image quality required to properly diagnose and treat a given disease and evaluate the role of machine learning algorithms, such as deep learning, in the enhancement of lower quality images. In this post hoc analysis of an ongoing randomized clinical trial, we assessed the diagnostic utility of reduced-quality and deep learning enhanced images for hydrocephalus treatment planning. CT images of post-infectious infant hydrocephalus were degraded in terms of spatial resolution,
