[The importance of magnification angiography as an investigation for the arterial supply of the femoral head after medial neck fracture (author's transl)].

In observing the development in 20 patients who had been operated upon for fracture of the neck of the femur a significant interrelation between the angiographic result and the formation of a necrosis of the head of the femur has been ascertained. The magnification angiography enables the terminal arterial region of the femoral vessels to be assessed with a still higher degree of certainty and thus appears to be a valuable diagnostic measure for the prognostic assessment of the medial fracture of the femoral neck.

Reliability of the Modified Method for Sphericity Deviation Score Using Only the Involved Hip Radiographs in the Patients With Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease.

BACKGROUND: The sphericity deviation score (SDS) is a validated radiographic outcome measure that quantifies the severity of the femoral head deformity in the healed stage of Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD). The current method requires radiographs of both hips regardless of unilateral involvement to standardize radiographic magnification. As LCPD affects the unilateral hip in 85% to 90% of cases, the current method imposes unnecessary radiation exposure to most of the patients and having to exclude patients from research studies who only had unilateral hip radiographs. We thus modified the S

Three-dimensional assessment of facial asymmetry: A systematic review.

For patients with facial asymmetry, complete and precise diagnosis, and surgical treatments to correct the underlying cause of the asymmetry are significant. Conventional diagnostic radiographs (submento-vertex projections, posteroanterior radiography) have limitations in asymmetry diagnosis due to two-dimensional assessments of three-dimensional (3D) images. The advent of 3D images has greatly reduced the magnification and projection errors that are common in conventional radiographs making it as a precise diagnostic aid for assessment of facial asymmetry. Thus, this article attempts to revie

A permanent mandibular second molar with seven root canal systems.

This case report illustrates the nonsurgical endodontic management of a seven-canaled mandibular second molar. The root canal configuration presented as four mesial and three distal canals. Identification of the canal system was made with the aid of magnification, ultrasonics, and multiple angulated radiographs. Postoperative examination at 18 months showed a clinically asymptomatic tooth with resolution of the periapical pathology.

Practical approaches to obtaining hand radiographs and special techniques in hand radiology.

Radiography of the hands and joints involves a certain amount of decision making by the radiographer. Many disorders of the wrists are evaluated with radiography, and the positions and radiographic technique factors should be adjusted to reveal as much of the desired anatomy as possible. Immobilizing the patient can be of significant value in obtaining good quality radiographs. It is essential that the processed radiograph contains all pertinent anatomy and that all structures have been demonstrated anatomically as well as radiographically. A number of radiographic positions and procedures are

Mathematical analysis of projection errors in "paralleling technique" with respect to implant geometry.

"Standardized" radiographs acquired in paralleling technique serve for monitoring of marginal bone levels around endosseous implants. Under clinical conditions, parallel adjustment of the film to the implant is beset with great difficulties. A mathematical model matching clinical conditions was developed to evaluate projection geometry within an interval of clinically relevant angulations (+/- 10 degrees from parallel position). Radiographs of two implants (Frialit 2, Friadent AG, Mannheim, Germany; Implant No. 1: 3.8 mm, length 10 mm; Implant No. 2: 6.5 mm, length 13 mm) were separately produ

[The child's skeleton following renal transplant. A correlation of the radiographic findings to the amount of parathormone (author's transl)].

The skeletal X-rays (magnification radiography of hand, pelvis, knee and shoulder joint) of 20 children before and after successful kidney transplantation were compared with the parathormone concentrations measured in the interval closest to the roentgenological examination. In 19 children, renal osteodystrophy existed before kidney transplantation, which was diagnosed based on the following radiographic findings of varying frequency: rarefaction and fuzziness of the spongiosa, fraying of metaphysical ends, widening of the growth plates, subperiosteal resorption and acroosteolysis. The paratho

Endoscopic minimally invasive management of a periradicular lesion invading the maxillary sinus.

A referred patient presented with a lesion of endodontic origin located at the apex of tooth #27. The tooth had been endodontically treated and re-treated. A periapical radiograph revealed a close relationship between the lesion and the maxillary sinus. A cone-beam computed tomography scan confirmed that the lesion had invaded the sinus cavity. The treatment plan consisted of periapical surgery using an endoscope as a magnification device. Due to a sinus membrane perforation, a new sinus membrane repair technique was performed. Twelve months after surgery, a cone-beam computed tomography scan

Influence of maxillomandibular ratio dynamics on post-pubertal sagittal classification: A retrospective historical cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cephalometric measurements, like the ANB or the Wits, enable sagittal skeletal classification; however, they can be affected by compensations, and the maxillomandibular differential may be subject to radiographic magnification. The maxillomandibular ratio (MxMdR) could provide a dynamic, magnification-independent intermaxillary sagittal assessment. AIMS: To describe the MxMdR throughout facial development and assess its impact on determining post-pubertal sagittal classification. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 224 untreated individuals (AAOF-Craciofacial Grow

Localization of ectopic maxillary canines -- is CBCT more accurate than conventional horizontal or vertical parallax?

OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of cone-beam CT (CBCT) with conventional horizontal and vertical parallax for the localization of ectopic maxillary canines. DESIGN: Observational study. METHODS: A typodont was constructed using human teeth embedded in radio-dense impression material, containing a simulated ectopic canine. Image sets (vertical/horizontal parallax and CBCT scans) were obtained for nine positions. A photograph confirmed the true position of the canine. Six observers used horizontal (HP) and vertical (VP) parallax techniques with conventional radiographs and the axial, corona

Capillary hemangioma of the sphenoid bone.

A capillary hemangioma in the body of the sphenoid bone produced unilateral optic atrophy in a 13-year-old boy. The typical reticulated appearance of an osseous hemangioma was clearly demonstrated only on direct magnification radiographs. At angiography, patchy filling occurred through vessels arising from the internal carotid and internal maxillary arteries bilaterally. The few other reports of sphenoid hemangiomas are reviewed.

Contemporary endodontic retreatments: an analysis based on clinical treatment findings.

A prospective in vivo investigation was conducted to determine radiographic and clinical factors associated with contemporary nonsurgical endodontic retreatments. Approximately 1,100 failing endodontically treated teeth were screened to determine an appropriate treatment plan. Using magnification, 337 consecutive retreatment cases were evaluated and treated. The vast majority of the retreated cases involved multiple factors. Eighty-five percent of the cases presented with periradicular radiolucencies. Sixty-five percent of the cases demonstrated poor radiographic obturation quality. Associated

Does the cervical canal to body ratio predict spinal stenosis?

The exact size of the bony cervical spinal canal and the vertebral body was measured in 368 cadaveric adult male vertebrae. A comparison of radiographic and direct measurements was also undertaken. The mean sagittal diameter of the spinal canal for C3-C7 was close to 14 mm (14.07 +/- 1.63 mm; N = 272). The mean ratio of the sagittal canal diameter to the vertebral body diameter (canal to body ratio) was 86.68 +/- 13.70 mm. Thirty-one percent of subaxial vertebrae would be diagnosed as having spinal stenosis if a canal to body ratio of less than 80% was considered abnormal. Measurements from pl

Unraveling the role of structure and density in determining vertebral bone strength.

The strength of bone is determined not only by bone density but also by structure. Therefore, quantification of the structure in radiographs by texture parameters may result in a better prediction of fracture risk. Since in radiographs density and structure are strongly correlated, the predictive power of texture parameters should be corrected for the influence of BMD to determine the additional information conveyed by these parameters. In this study, we evaluated the predictive power of various texture parameters based on the Grey-Level Dependence Method and the Morphological Gradient Method.

Transcrestal sinus floor elevation with osteotomes: simplified technique and management of various scenarios.

In order to place implants subantrally when there is a reduced amount of bone, some form of bone augmentation is required. A transcrestal sinus floor elevation using osteotomes can increase bone levels and is a highly successful procedure. However, malleting osteotomes can be disconcerting for a patient. Therefore, a simplified technique is presented that minimizes the use of a mallet when executing a sinus floor elevation in medium dense bone. In addition, issues related to performing a transcrestal sinus floor elevation are addressed.

The intra- and inter-observer reliability of the Samilson and Prieto grading system of glenohumeral arthropathy.

Severity of glenohumeral arthropathy following shoulder instability is often graded radiologically on the basis of osteophyte size according to Samilson and Prieto. Intra- and inter-observer reliability of this popular grading system was determined using standard radiographs of 20 arthritic cadaveric humeri. Using two observers on two occasions, reliability of the grading system using the antero-posterior radiograph varied between fair and poor (kappa coefficients 0.07-0.33). This study shows that the Samilson and Prieto grading of glenohumeral arthropathy is unreliable and, in clinical use, w

Endocytoscopic observation of various esophageal lesions at ×600: can nuclear abnormality be recognized?

Endocytoscopy (ECS) is a novel endoscopic technique that allows detailed diagnostic examination of the gastrointestinal tract at the cellular level. We previously reported that use of ECS at ×380 magnification (GIF-Y0002) allowed a pathologist to diagnose esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) with high sensitivity (94.9%) but considerably low specificity (46.7%) because this low magnification did not reveal information about nuclear abnormality. In the present study, we used the same magnifying endoscope to observe various esophageal lesions, but employed digital 1.6-fold magnification to
