OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to validate the near-infrared imaging (NIRI) in comparison with visual inspection (VI) for early detection of proximal caries in primary molars.
METHODS: VI and intraoral scans were performed on 126 patients aged 3-12 years with at least one non-cavitied and non-restored proximal tooth surface, who were scheduled for bite wing radiography (BWR) as part of their standard care. Teeth with signs of proximal cavities, restorations or residual caries were excluded in this study. BWR, a gold standard to diagnose proximal caries in primary molars, was used to va

INTRODUCTION: Near-infrared imaging (NIRI) has been proposed as an alternative to radiographs and uses nonionizing radiation in the near-infrared spectrum to differentially scatter light off tooth surfaces and generate images allowing interproximal caries detection. The new iTero 5D Element Scanner (Align Technology, Santa Clara, Calif) has integrated NIRI capture and viewing technology but has not been specifically studied in a pediatric population. Therefore, this study aimed to assess clinicians' abilities to detect and characterize caries in pediatric patients using this instrument.

Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption or defect is an unusual radiolucency located in the dentin, just beneath the dentin-enamel junction of unerupted teeth. The pathogenesis of the phenomenon is unclear. The present case with a radiolucency that has not changed in its dimension over a period of almost 7 years, until tooth eruption, raises a question about the progressive nature of the defect that is defined as "resorption." Resorption may not be the sole explanation for a pre-eruptive intracoronal radiolucent defect. The authors also challenge the hypothesis of "local pressure" as a prime caus

Accurate classification of dental caries from bitewing radiographs is crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment planning. Traditional diagnostic methods can be subjective and inconsistent, highlighting the potential benefits of adopting computer-aided diagnostic systems. Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of deep learning-based classification using the ICCMSTM 7-class system, which is pivotal for precise caries diagnosis. Building on these advances, this study aims to enhance ResNet models by incorporating the projected gradient descent (PGD) into the training process. By i

This paper presents a case of maxillary sinus unilateral aplasia, an uncommon condition in adults, diagnosed as an incidental finding during cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) examination for an endodontic case analysis. The patient was referred to a specialist endodontic practice for management of an upper right central incisor tooth. A CBCT scan was performed. The images of the left maxillary sinus showed a total lack of pneumatisation, prompting the diagnosis of aplasia. The patient's otolaryngologist was made aware of the findings. Clinical evaluation of volumetric images should be perfo

This report presents a case of a patient who developed a supernumerary mandibular premolar during the course of orthodontic treatment. Evidence of this tooth comes from consecutive panoramic radiographs. It is not routine practice to screen for developing supernumerary teeth during orthodontic treatment. Therefore, the possibility of supernumerary tooth interference with occlusal development or orthodontic treatment should always be kept in mind. A brief review of literature concerning the late formation of supernumerary teeth is included.

Odontome, tumor of odontogenic origin, is associated with disturbances in the eruption of teeth such as impaction, delayed eruption or retention of permanent teeth. It is seen on radiographic examination as a radiopaque lesion which may be single or multiple. Morphologically, odontomes are of two types-compound or complex and can be found at any age with high prevalence in maxilla than in mandible. In this case report, lack of eruption of permanent mandibular canine owing to presence of associated compound odontome is presented.

BACKGROUND: Using the fastest dental X-ray film available is an easy way of reducing exposure to ionizing radiation. However, the diagnostic ability of fast films for the detection of proximal surface caries must be demonstrated before these films will become universally accepted.
METHODS: Extracted premolar and molar teeth were arranged to simulate a bitewing examination and radiographed using Ultraspeed and Ektaspeed Plus dental X-ray films. Three different exposure times were used for each film type. Six general dentists were used to determine the presence and depth of the decay in the pro

Proximal caries presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Recent understanding of the etiology and pathology of dental caries has led to the adoption of non-invasive and/or minimally invasive approaches in the early stages of caries lesions. This clinical study aimed to compare the efficacy of resin infiltration and remineralization in the treatment of initial proximal caries lesions over a 1- and 2-year follow-up period. The study involved 47 patients aged between 18 and 38 years. Patients were clinically examined and underwent bitewing radiography to detect at least three initial proxi
