Freeze tolerance is an adaptive strategy that wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) use to survive the subzero temperatures of winter. It is characterized by a variety of metabolic and physiological changes that facilitate successful freezing and anoxia. As both mRNA regulation and posttranslation protein modification have been implicated in freeze tolerance, we hypothesized that posttranslational RNA regulation is also involved in coordinating freeze-thaw cycles and metabolic rate depression. As such, we investigated the most abundant RNA modification, adenosine methylation (N6 -methyladenosine; m6 A)

Genetic sex-determination features male (XX/XY) or female heterogamety (ZZ/ZW). To identify similarities and differences in the molecular evolution of sex-linked genes between these systems, we directly compared the sex chromosome systems existing in the frog Glandirana rugosa. The heteromorphic X/Y and Z/W sex chromosomes were derived from chromosomes 7 (2n = 26). RNA-Seq, de novo assembly, and BLASTP analyses identified 766 sex-linked genes. These genes were classified into three different clusters (XW/YZ, XY/ZW, and XZ/YW) based on sequence identities between the chromosomes, probably refle

While most anuran species are highly vocal, few of them seem to be endowed with a complex call repertoire. Odorrana tormota, combines a remarkable vocalization complexity with auditory sensitivity over an extended spectral range spanning from audible to ultrasonic frequencies. This species is also exceptional for its ability to modify its middle ear tuning by closing the Eustachian tubes (ET). Using scanning laser Doppler vibrometry, the tympanal vibrations were measured to investigate if the tuning shift caused by the ET closure contributes to intraspecific acoustic communication. To gain ins

The wood frog, Rana sylvatica (aka Lithobates sylvaticus) is the main model for studies of natural freeze tolerance among amphibians living in seasonally cold climates. During freezing, ∼65% of total body water can be converted to extracellular ice and this imposes both dehydration and hypoxia/anoxia stresses on cells. The current study analyzed the responses of the alpha subunit of the hypoxia-inducible transcription factor (HIF-1), a crucial oxygen-sensitive regulator of gene expression, to freezing, anoxia or dehydration stresses, examining six tissues of wood frogs (liver, skeletal muscle,

Although amphibian-derived bioactive peptides have attracted increasing attention for their potential use in the treatment of photodamage, research is still in its infancy. In this study, we obtained a new antioxidant peptide, named OA-GI13 (GIWAPWPPRAGLC), from the skin of the odorous frog Odorrana andersonii and determined its effects on ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced skin photodamage as well as its possible molecular mechanisms. Results showed that OA-GI13 directly scavenged free radicals, maintained the viability of hydrogen peroxide-challenged keratinocytes, promoted the release of superoxid

Host-parasite interactions are often influenced by environmental factors through multiple mechanisms. For example, changes in host food resources may affect multiple host traits (e.g., body size, behavior, immunocompetence), which may increase or decrease infection levels and the impact of parasites on host fitness. We often lack an understanding of which traits are most important for parasite transmission and fitness effects, posing challenges to predicting consequences of changing environmental conditions (e.g., eutrophication). Here, I examined the effects of food resources and host traits

In frog atrial trabeculae low-Na contractures and caffeine contractures evoked in Na-poor solutions are increased by raising the external Ca concentration [( Ca]o), lowering the external Na concentration [( Na]o) or by tissue depolarization in K-rich fluids. The source of activator Ca for the low-Na and the caffeine contractures is probably different because Na-withdrawal contractures are inhibited by Mn2+ but unaffected by local anaesthetics, while the caffeine contractures are potentiated by Mn2+ and inhibited by local anaesthetics. The spontaneous relaxation of the low-Na contracture has a

We present an analysis of experimental steady-state properties of charge movements in voltage-clamped frog skeletal muscle; by adopting an approach based on equilibrium statistical mechanics, detailed assumptions about the dynamics of the charge movement were avoided. Different components of the charge movements, as characterized by their sensitivities to local anaesthetics, were taken to correspond to different types of independent subsystem (integral membrane proteins). Quantitative agreement with the data for the q beta and q gamma components was obtained for the simplest subsystems, having

Predators can cause selection that drives the evolution of various anti-predator defenses in prey1,2,3. Some prey species have evolved specific defensive devices, while others simply use body parts that evolved for reasons other than defense to repel predators1. For example, many animal species have strong canine teeth or mandibles to kill prey and to counterattack their enemies1,2,3. Bees and wasps (Insecta: Hymenoptera) use their ovipositors as stings to repel attackers, including humans4. Stinging by injecting venom can cause intense pain and allergic reactions in humans4. Therefore, stingi

Trematode infection of the second intermediate hosts can lead to changes in their fitness and, as a result, a change in the invasion rate of animal communities. It is especially pronounced during the invasion of parasite species that reduce activity due to the manipulation of hosts through the changes of their morphology and physiology. One of these cases is an anomaly P syndrome hotspot found in some populations of water frogs and toads in Europe caused by the trematode Strigea robusta metacercariae. The occurrence of pathogen and their participation in ecosystems are intrigues questions in t

Rising wildfire risk and continued winter road maintenance increase the potential for wildfire ash and road salts to enter cold-region amphibian breeding habitats via rainfall or snowmelt runoff, yet their combined effects on skin and gut microbiota remain unclear. Rana dybowskii tadpoles were exposed for 28 days to control (C), low-temperature road salt (D), eco-friendly road salt (H), aqueous extract of wildfire ash (T), T + D (TD), and T + H (TH). Skin and gut microbiota were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed that exposure reduced body mass, developmental proportio

In sexually reproducing animals, accurate sex recognition is fundamental for successful mating. Bidirectional signals are a sexually selected mechanism of mate recognition1, involving different, sex-specific cues to signal identity and reduce recognition errors. However, when these signals are insufficiently divergent or become obscured by environmental noise, the probability of misidentification can increase dramatically2. Among frogs, same-sex sexual behavior is widespread and is frequently attributed to sex-recognition errors, ambiguous signals, male-biased sex ratios or the instinct to ind

Endocrine disruptors have been demonstrated to exert adverse effects on growth and development of amphibians by disrupting hormone levels. Tail resorption, which is one of the most remarkable events during amphibian metamorphosis, is closely associated with thyroid hormones levels. However, limited research has been conducted on the effects of endocrine disruptors on tail resorption in amphibians. This study explored the effects of NaClO4 and T4 on the growth, development and tail resorption during the metamorphosis of Rana Chensinensis. The results demonstrated that exposure to NaClO4 led to

The canonical model of sex-chromosome evolution assigns a key role to sexually antagonistic (SA) genes on the arrest of recombination and ensuing degeneration of Y chromosomes. This assumption cannot be tested in organisms with highly differentiated sex chromosomes, such as mammals or birds, owing to the lack of polymorphism. Fixation of SA alleles, furthermore, might be the consequence rather than the cause of recombination arrest. Here we focus on a population of common frogs (Rana temporaria) where XY males with genetically differentiated Y chromosomes (nonrecombinant Y haplotypes) coexist

To mimic ischemic heart disease in humans, several animal models have been created, mainly in rodents by surgically ligating their coronary arteries. In the present study, by simply inducing burn injuries on the bullfrog heart, we reproduced abnormal ST segment changes in the electrocardiogram (ECG), mimicking those observed in ischemic heart disease, such as acute myocardial infarction and angina pectoris. The "currents of injury" created by a voltage gradient between the intact and damaged areas of the myocardium, negatively deflected the ECG vector during the diastolic phase, making the ST

In 2010, a mass die-off of over 1000 wild water frogs (Pelophylax spp.) and at least 10 common newts (Lissotriton vulgaris) occurred in a pond in The Netherlands. Haemorrhagic disease with hepatomegaly and splenomegaly was evident. Microscopically, multiple organs presented cells with multifocal intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies, in which ranavirus-like particles were demonstrated ultrastructurally. All specimens examined tested positive for ranavirus by PCR. The sequence obtained showed a 100% identity with the one deposited for common midwife toad virus (CMTV). This is the first report of ra

In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of frog deformities throughout many of the northern states of North America. The most readily noticed malformations involve the hindlimbs of peri-metamorphic animals. We have analyzed skeletal preparations of metamorphosing mink frogs (Rana septentrionalis) collected from a site in Minnesota, in order to develop a better understanding of the possible causes. In this paper we describe the categories of abnormalities found at this site. The spectrum of deformities includes missing limbs, truncated limbs, extra limbs (including extra pe

Hearts from 81 frogs were divided into 10 groups and placed individually in a temperature-controlled waveguide filled with Ringer's solution. Hearts of Group A served as controls. Hearts of the other nine groups were treated with pulsed microwaves (2450 MHz, 10 microseconds, 100 pps) that ranged from a specific-absorption rate (SAR) of 2 to 200 W/kg. In several groups, an electrocardiogram was used to synchronize microwave irradiation with the heartbeat. In one group of frog hearts exposed at 200 W/kg, the heart rate slowed down sharply 25 minutes after irradiation, by which time the temperatu
