Treatments to Avoid Ranula Recurrence: A Network Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Oral and plunging ranulas require effective treatment strategies to minimize recurrence; yet no consensus exists on the most effective approach. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review evaluated several treatments for the recurrence of oral and plunging ranulas. METHODOLOGY: A comprehensive search was conducted in five bibliographic databases and gray literature. Randomized and non-randomized studies were included if they investigated treatment approaches for oral or plunging ranulas. Two independent reviewers screened studies, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. The primar

Plunging Ranula in Children: Case Report and Literature Review.

Few cases of plunging ranulas (PRs) occur during childhood and the lesions are frequently misdiagnosed. Here, a PR in a child is reported along with a literature review. A seven-year-old female complaining of swelling in the midline neck, left-submandibular region, was evaluated. No oral cavity or major salivary glands abnormalities were detected. On palpation, a soft, painless, and fluid-containing mass was observed. The suspicion PR was performed by ultrasound. The diagnosis was confirmed with a histopathological examination. The lesion was removed with a cervical approach, without recurrenc

Correct diagnosis for plunging ranula by magnetic resonance imaging.

Plunging ranulas most commonly occupy the submandibular triangle and misdiagnosis inevitably leads to incorrect treatment. Three cases of plunging ranula are reported. The correct diagnosis resulted from the characteristic signs of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Treatment consisted of the total removal of the sublingual gland and evacuation of cystic contents by the intraoral approach. The cyst gradually regressed and disappeared within two months after surgery as confirmed by ultrasonography. All three cases have not experienced recurrence in the follow-up period. MRI is a valuable method

Sublingual ranula: a closer look to its surgical management.

Ranulas have been managed by various surgical methods, and the optimal treatment is still controversial. The aim of this study was to analyze a group of 124 surgically treated patients with intraoral ranula to assess 3 different methods: sublingual gland removal combined with the ranula excision, conventional marsupialization, and a variant of the marsupialization technique usually performed in our departments. Recurrence rate was 0% after radical treatment, 25.8% after marsupialization, and 12% after modified marsupialization. We suggest that conservative methods should always be considered a

Plunging ranula: literature review and report of three cases.

Three cases of plunging ranula are described and the literature is reviewed. In many cases, a plunging ranula is iatrogenic and follows surgery to an oral ranula. In the cases presented, the cervical swelling was associated with prolongations of sublingual gland into or through the mylohyoid muscle. All patients were cured by partial or total excision of the sublingual gland.

Clinical Diagnosis and Management of Bilateral Plunging Ranula.

Ranula is a benign salivary gland lesion originating from the sublingual salivary gland. This condition is primarily associated with salivary extravasation and retention due to obstruction or injury of the submandibular duct. A plunging ranula represents a rare variant occurring in the neck, submandibular, or submental regions, with bilateral presentations being particularly uncommon. Clinically, due to its lack of specificity, it is easily confused with other cervical lesions. This paper reports a case of a 25-year-old female presenting with bilateral painless submandibular masses. MRI reveal

Submandibular gland mucocele associated with a mixed ranula.

Mucoceles of the submandibular gland are extremely rare pathologic occurrences that present an investigative and management dilemma owing to their clinical indistinguishability from plunging ranulas. Of the few that have been documented, these mucous extravasation cysts involved the submandibular gland alone. We describe perhaps the first case of an extensive submandibular gland mucocele occurring in conjunction with a mixed ranula from the ipsilateral sublingual gland, and discuss the various considerations in the management of such lesions.

Transoral approach for plunging ranula--10-year experience.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Plunging ranulas (PRs) are infrequently encountered. The origin of PRs is mostly from the sublingual gland (SLG). Different routes to manage PRs include marsupialization, simple SLG excision, and combined SLG and submandibular gland (SMG) excision either transcervically or transorally. In this study, we demonstrated our experience managing PRs via transoral excision of the SLG with marsupialization. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 20 patients at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou, between January 1999 and April 2009. All patient

Sublingual ranula: report of a submandibular clinical case.

Ranula is a raised mucocele on the oral floor. When the mucocele extends and passes the sublingual space and invades the submandibular space it may be called ''plunging ranula''. Its etiology is not completely known. Our clinical case is a clear example: a 10-year old formation, not painful, developed during several years and originally of small dimension located in the sublingual region. The purpose of this study is to underline that the surgical treatment of choice, in these clinical situations, is the drainage of the cavity and marsupialization rather than a radical removal.

CT scanning of the plunging ranula. Case report.

A diagnosis of the deep plunging ranula usually is based upon the history and clinical examination of the patient. The case presented here highlights the role of the CT scan in facilitating a definitive diagnosis. Visualization of the anatomic relations of the accumulated secretion, as it dissects its way through the cervical tissue planes, also is made possible.

Sarcoid ranula. Its association with wide-spread sarcoidosis.

The presence of noncaseating granulomas in salivary tissue is a specific feature of sarcoidosis. We document the case of a healthy woman who presented with a sarcoid ranula of the sublingual salivary gland without any other manifestations of the disease. This sarcoid ranula subsequently progressed to symptomatic widespread sarcoidosis in a span of 7 months. An asymptomatic sarcoid ranula may thus possibly represent a precursor to widespread sarcoidosis.

Intraductal papilloma of the sublingual gland imitating a ranula.

Ductal papillomas are rare benign lesions of the salivary glands with two distinctive types, intraductal and inverted. The rarest anatomical location where intraductal papillomas occur is the major salivary glands. In the present study, we report an intraductal papilloma of the left sublingual gland with the relevant clinical, imaging, and histopathological findings and postoperative follow-up. To our knowledge, this is the fourth case of an intraductal papilloma of a sublingual gland to be reported in the international literature. We present this rare case because of its clinical and radiolog

Modified Micromarsupialization as Treatment of Ranula in a Pediatric Patient.

Ranulas are mucoceles located on the floor of the mouth. The main form of treatment for these lesions is surgical excision, but this can lead to complications such as hemorrhage, recurrence of the lesion, and damage to the lingual nerve. Thus, other therapeutic modalities are indicated, such as modified micromarsupialization, which is a simple technique and not associated with recurrences, and without the need of a new intervention in the postoperative period. An 11-year-old female child, nonwhite, presented with bubble-shaped lesion located on floor of the mouth, on the left side, with exophy

Transoral Robotic Surgery with Sialendoscopy for a Plunging Ranula.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Plunging ranulas are oral mucoceles that often cannot be visualized directly and thus can be challenging to diagnose and differentiate from other neck lesions. Surgery is the preferred treatment option, but the optimal approach requires careful consideration. METHODS: We report the case of a plunging ranula presenting as an isolated neck mass in a 33-year-old patient. This patient was treated with a novel transoral robotic surgery (TORS)-assisted approach aided by sialendoscopy. RESULTS: TORS allowed for exceptional visualization and access to the plunging ranula and subling

Surgical results of the intraoral approach for plunging ranula.

CONCLUSIONS: The intraoral approach for removal of the plunging ranula is a safe and effective surgical approach as a primary treatment modality for plunging ranula. OBJECTIVES: Although sclerotherapy is applied for plunging ranula, it can be primarily treated with surgery such as marsupialization, simple excision, and transcervical excision. This study was performed to assess the results of the intraoral approach for the treatment of plunging ranula. METHODS: This prospective clinical study comprised a total of 23 patients with plunging ranula treated by the intraoral approach. RESULTS: Al

A comparison of three methods used for treatment of ranula.

PURPOSE: This report compares the treatment results for oral and plunging ranulas. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven patients were retrospectively examined concerning treatment methods and recurrence on the basis of their medical records. The surgical specimens were also examined microscopically. RESULTS: Four patients had excision of the ranula only, 22 had marsupialization, and nine had removal of the sublingual gland combined with the excision of the ranula. These treatments showed a 25.0%, 36.4% and 0% recurrence rate, respectively. Histological observation revealed no epithelial lining

Plunging ranula: a case report and a literature review.

The plunging ranula is a mucous extravasation cyst of the sublingual gland. It is slightly more common in females, shows no side preference, and is more prevalent in the second and third decades of life. It typically manifests as a painless, nonmobile swelling in the neck and in four of five cases is associated with an intraoral ranula or swelling. If there is no history of an oral ranula the clinical diagnosis is difficult, and it may be left to the reporting pathologist to give the correct diagnosis. The histologic appearance is characteristically of a cyst, devoid of epithelium or endotheli

Diagnostic Difficulties of Plunging Ranula: A Review of 18 Cases.

OBJECTIVE(S): Despite advancements in imaging techniques and cytological analysis, plunging ranula remains a challenging surgical, radiologic, and pathologic phenomenon. Of the 18 patients we evaluated at our institution, we highlight three cases that illustrate the high rate of misleading imaging and cytological results when assessing plunging ranula. METHODS: Imaging results, biopsy findings, operative techniques, and pathological reports were reviewed from patients who had either a preoperative or postoperative diagnosis of ranula and underwent surgery by a single head and neck surgeon at
