Experimental infection of five species of raptors and of hooded crows with Francisella tularensis biovar palaearctica.

Sixteen raptors and three hooded crows were infected experimentally with Francisella tularensis biovar palaearctica. The birds were infected parenterally or per os. One goshawk, one sparrow hawk and one hooded crow died during the experimental period, and the remaining 16 birds were killed 14-77 days after the first infection. Francisella tularensis was not isolated from any bird. Antibody levels against F. tularensis measured in nine birds varied from 0 to 1:1,280. In one goshawk with a titer of 1:1,280, positive fluorescent antibody reactions against F. tularensis were seen in the liver and

Epidemiology and genetic diversity of Toxoplasma gondii in rescued raptors from wildlife rehabilitation centres in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Raptors, including the orders Accipitriformes (hawks and kites), Falconiformes (falcons and caracaras), Cathartiformes (New World vultures), and Strigiformes (owls), are found in small forest fragments, parks, vacant lots, outskirts, and open areas within the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. However, few studies have examined the infectious agents that infect them, particularly protozoa. This research reports on the seroprevalence, isolation, and genetic diversity of the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii in rescued raptors from two wildlife reh

Quantitative analysis of the morphing wing mechanism of raptors: Bionic design of Falco Peregrinus wing skeleton.

The wing is one of the most important parts of a bird's locomotor system and is the inspiration origination for bionic wing design. During wing motions, the wing shape is closely related to the rotation angles of wing bones. Therefore, the research on the law of bone movement in the process of wing movement can be good guidance for the design of the bionic morphing wing. In this paper, the skeletal posture of the peregrine falcon wing during the extension/flexion is studied to obtain critical data on skeletal posture. Since an elbow joint and a wrist joint rotate correlatively to drive a wing

Comparing the toepads of Australian diurnal and nocturnal raptors with nonpredatory taxa: Insights into functional morphology.

The ventral structures of the avian digits are the critical interface between a bird and the item within its grasp (e.g., prey, landing substrate, or object), and as such are vital for ensuring the hunting success and survival of predatory birds. Here, we present the first descriptive analysis of the ventral structures of the toes, toepad morphology, and toepad surface area of several diurnal (Accipitriformes and Falconiformes) and nocturnal species (Strigiformes) of Australian raptors. We compare these with nonpredatory taxa (passeriform and psittaciform) to elucidate possible functional expl

ZNF143 regulates autophagic flux to alleviate myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury through Raptor.

The exact role of autophagy in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is still controversial. Excessive or insufficient autophagy may lead to cell death. Therefore, how to regulate autophagic balance during myocardial ischemia/reperfusion is critical to the treatment of myocardial I/R injury. Raptor is an mTOR regulatory related protein and closely related to the induction of autophagy. ZNF143 is widely expressed in various cells and acts as a transcription factor, which is involved in the regulation of autophagy, cell growth and development. In this study, we aimed to explore the mechan

VHL suppresses RAPTOR and inhibits mTORC1 signaling in clear cell renal cell carcinoma.

Inactivation of the tumor suppressor von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) gene is a key event in hereditary and sporadic clear cell renal cell carcinomas (ccRCC). The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway is a fundamental regulator of cell growth and proliferation, and hyperactivation of mTOR signaling is a common finding in VHL-dependent ccRCC. Deregulation of mTOR signaling correlates with tumor progression and poor outcome in patients with ccRCC. Here, we report that the regulatory-associated protein of mTOR (RAPTOR) is strikingly repressed by VHL. VHL interacts with RAPTOR and increa

Health of an ex situ population of raptors (Falconiformes and Strigiformes) in Mexico: diagnosis of internal parasites.

Successful programs for ex situ and in situ conservation and management of raptors require detailed knowledge about their pathogens. The purpose of this study was to identify the internal parasites of some captive raptors in Mexico, as well as to verify their impact in the health status of infected birds. Birds of prey were confiscated and kept in captivity at the Centro de Investigación y Conservación de Vida Silvestre (CIVS) in Los Reyes La Paz, Mexico State. For this, fecal and blood samples from 74 birds of prey (66 Falconiformes and eight Strigiformes) of 15 species, juveniles and adults

Natural History After Likely Cure Versus Recurrence After Prostate Radiotherapy (RAPTOR).

BACKGROUND: Whether freedom from biochemical recurrence (BCR) at 5 yr after definitive radiotherapy (RT) for localized prostate cancer (PCa) represents a durable cure remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between the timing of BCR after RT and the long-term risks of distant metastasis (DM) and PCa-specific mortality (PCSM), overall and according to treatment intensity, including outcomes by BCR timing (≤5 yr, >5 yr, or no BCR). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Post hoc individual patient data analysis of 3120 men with intermediate- (89%) or high-risk (11%) PCa enrolled

Raptor and Drp1 Function Synthetically to Control Hypoxic Death and the Mitochondrial Network in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Hypoxia induces mitochondrial fragmentation. Whether this fragmentation promotes or prevents cell death and whether the mitochondrial dynamics machinery plays a role are unresolved. To address these questions, we measured the effect of hypoxia on mitochondrial morphology in a Caenorhabditis elegans Raptor mutant resistant to hypoxic death and in mutants with disrupted mitochondrial fission and fusion. The Raptor loss-of-function mutant reduced hypoxia-induced mitochondrial fragmentation and death. However, forcing mitochondrial fragmentation prior to hypoxia by combining the Raptor mutation wi

Raptor mediates the selective inhibitory effect of cardamonin on RRAGC-mutant B cell lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: mTORC1 (mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1) is associated with lymphoma progression. Oncogenic RRAGC (Rag guanosine triphosphatase C) mutations identified in patients with follicular lymphoma facilitate the interaction between Raptor (regulatory protein associated with mTOR) and Rag GTPase. It promotes the activation of mTORC1 and accelerates lymphomagenesis. Cardamonin inhibits mTORC1 by decreasing the protein level of Raptor. In the present study, we investigated the inhibitory effect and possible mechanism of action of cardamonin in RRAGC-mutant lymphoma. This could provi

Assessment of anticoagulant rodenticide exposure in six raptor species from the Canary Islands (Spain).

Anticoagulant rodenticides are highly toxic compounds that are widely used for pest control of rodents, but that also may threaten the wildlife's health. This work aimed to assess the exposure to first- and second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) in six birds of prey species from the Canary Islands (Spain). The concentrations of seven widely used ARs were determined by LC-MS/MS in 104 liver samples of six species of birds of prey (Buteo buteo, Accipiter nisus, Falco pelegrinoides, Falco tinnunculus, Asio otus, and Tyto alba). We determined that 61% of the livers had detectable resid

Predictive framework for estimating the risks to raptors from ecologically relevant exposure to second generation anticoagulant rodenticides.

Globally, populations of many raptor species are declining for reasons including exposure to chemical contaminants. Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticide (SGAR) residues are commonly found in the livers of raptors, indicating dietary exposure and potentially secondary poisoning. There is a gap in our understanding of SGAR exposure for raptors at different life stages and under different usage regimes. We develop a new modelling framework for non-target species to refine the commonly applied risk assessment using the common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) as a case study. Our scenarios simula

Auditory performance in bald eagles and red-tailed hawks: a comparative study of hearing in diurnal raptors.

Collision with wind turbines is a conservation concern for eagles with population abundance implications. The development of acoustic alerting technologies to deter eagles from entering hazardous air spaces is a potentially significant mitigation strategy to diminish associated morbidity and mortality risks. As a prelude to the engineering of deterrence technologies, auditory function was assessed in bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), as well as in red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis). Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to a comprehensive battery of clicks and tone bursts varying in leve

High-risk Escherichia coli global clones ST10 and ST155 in wild raptors admitted to a rehabilitation center.

The dissemination of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterbacterales, once largely confined to healthcare settings, has become a growing One Health concern as these pathogens threaten diverse environments, including wildlife habitats. This study describes high-risk clones of ESBL-producing Enterobacterales in wildlife undergoing rehabilitation at a zoological park in Southeast Brazil. Among 49 wild mammals and birds sampled, two Escherichia coli strains, from a rusty-barred owl and a black vulture, tested positive for ESBL production and exhibited multidrug resistance profiles.

Metazoan parasites of three new world vultures (Aves: Cathartiformes) from Chile: a parasitological survey of understudied raptors.

Vultures are key species in ecosystems, limiting the spread of infectious diseases while scavenging carcasses. However, they are also the most threatened avian group with several conflicts with livestock farming, hunting, poisoning and intoxication with pesticides, lead and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Still, they represent a understudied group related to parasitological surveys, particularly in the Neotropics. This study aimed to characterize the metazoan parasitic fauna in three species of New World vultures (NWV): Turkey vulture (Cathartes aura), Black vulture (Coragyps atratus) a

Parasites, Bacteria, and Associated Pathological Changes in the Digestive System of Diurnal and Nocturnal Raptors in Central Italy.

The knowledge of raptor pathogens and associated lesions may be extremely important to enhancing raptor conservation efforts and reducing pathogen spillover to humans and domesticated animals and vice versa. Parasite infections of the digestive system and associated bacteria and pathological changes were evaluated in deceased diurnal and nocturnal raptors in central Italy. Overall, the prevalence of parasites (nematodes, cestodes, trematodes, acanthocephalans, and protozoa) identified in the examined birds was 72.41%, and most of the positive raptors (71.42%) showed multiple parasite infection

Investigating spatial patterns of mercury and rodenticide residues in raptors collected near the Charlotte, NC, USA, metropolitan area.

Raptor population growth is dynamic and trends vary across species and by location in the United States. For those species that are declining, it is important to identify potential causes including chemical contaminants. Sampling wild raptors is problematic due to their small population sizes and role as a top predator. Therefore, we obtained liver samples (n = 56) from carcasses of several raptor species, including common species like red-tailed hawks, red-shouldered hawks, barred owls, great horned owls, and osprey that arrived dead or were euthanized from a non-profit rehabilitation center

Digenean fauna in raptors from northeastern Argentina, with the description of a new species of Strigea (Digenea: Strigeidae).

The digenean fauna of six species of falconiform birds from northeastern Argentina is reported and a new species and several new hosts and geographical records are presented. Strigea proteolytica n. sp. (Strigeidae) is described from Buteogallus urubitinga and distinguished from their congeners by the combination of the following characters: plump body, conspicuous proteolytic gland, forebody with scarce vitelline glands, copulatory bursa with a well developed muscular ring (Ringnapf), and absence of true neck region in hindbody. Six previously known species are breifly described: Strigea falc
