PURPOSE: A reference atlas of optic nerve (ON) retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons could facilitate studies of neuro-ophthalmic diseases by detecting subtle RGC axonal changes. A study was conducted to determine the relationship among oral dose, trough whole blood levels, graft survival, and side effects in sirolimus-treated allografted rats. The heterotopic heart allograft model using Brown Norway donors and Lewis rat recipients was used. Rats were dosed daily with sirolimus or vehicle until graft failure or up to a maximum of 28 days. PURPOSE: To investigate the role of mast cells in the induction of endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU).
METHODS: We previously showed that the mean mast cell number in the anterior uvea was greatest for Lewis rats, lowest for Brown Norway (BN) rats, and intermediate for LBNF1 rats. In the current experiment, we assessed the time of onset and severity of EIU in these three rat strains. The inability of the 'ethanol/high vitamin A Lieber-DeCarli diet' to induce liver fibrosis in two different rat strains was further evaluated by determining changes in parameters of liver cell damage and of retinoid and lipid metabolism.
