N-(3,5-Difluorophenyl)succinimide (DFPS) is a non-toxic analogue of the nephrotoxic fungicide N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)succinimide (NDPS). Although NDPS must be metabolized to produce renal damage, the metabolic fate of DFPS is unknown. These studies were therefore designed to examine the nephrotoxic potential of putative DFPS metabolites and to determine if DFPS is metabolized differently from NDPS. Apoptosis in tumor and normal tissues was examined in rats treated with whole-body hyperthermia (WBH; 41.5 degrees C for 2 h). WBH alone produced 0.5 day of tumor growth delay (TGD) in a fibrosarcoma and 5.8 days of TGD in the Ward colon carcinoma. This difference in WBH-induced TGD indicates that the fibrosarcoma is relatively resistant to WBH, whereas the Ward colon carcinoma is relatively heat sensitive. A quantitative histological assay for apoptosis demonstrated that the extent of apoptosis in the fibrosarcoma reached a maximum level of 19% 4 h after WBH and returned to the control level

The effect of estrogen deficiency on matrix-induced bone formation was investigated. Female rats were ovariectomized and given demineralized bone matrix (DBM) intramuscularly 3 weeks before termination. The DBM was taken from previously ovariectomized and from sham-operated on rats. Gas uptake simulation methods were used to determine kinetic constants for trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,1-dichloroethylene (1,1-DCE) metabolism in vivo in male Fischer 344 rats. Immunofluorescence was used to determine the relative percentages of T and B lymphocytes found in the lungs of normal and Mycoplasma pulmonis-infected F344 rats. One of the main challenges to understand drug addiction is defining the biological mechanisms that underlie individual differences in recidivism. Studies of these mechanisms have mainly focused on the brain, yet we demonstrate here a significant influence of the peripheral immune system on this phenomenon. The effect of the newly discovered tachykinin dodecapeptide kassinin on endocrine pancreatic function was examined in the rat and compared to that of substance P, a neuropeptide which is structurally closely related to kassinin. OBJECTIVE: Superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) function is critical to laryngeal sensation. Sensory dysfunction in the larynx, mediated through the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (iSLN), is thought to occur with aging and neurodegenerative disease.
