Visualizing solution-phase reaction dynamics with time-resolved X-ray liquidography.

Most chemical reactions occur in solution, and complex interactions between solute and solvent influence the rich chemistry of these processes. To track time-dependent processes in such reactions, researchers often use time-resolved spectroscopy. In these experiments, an optical pulse (pump) initiates a reaction, and another time-delayed optical pulse (probe) monitors the progress of the reaction. However, because of the wavelength range of the probe light used in these experiments, from infrared to ultraviolet, researchers cannot directly determine detailed structural information such as the

Use of reaction time in the temporal analysis of normal swallowing.

This study was performed to establish the swallowing trigger by using the reaction time from an auditory stimulus. With this stable temporal starting point, we described the chronology of the different acoustic, electrophysiologic, and respiratory events that occurred during swallowing in a population of normal adults. We studied the swallowing reaction time (SRT) in 18 subjects aged 23 to 73 years by using acoustic, electroglottographic (EGG), and aerodynamic recordings. The chronology (the beginning of EGG activity, apnea, and respiratory sound and release) was identified in 91% of the recor

Placebo response to caffeine improves reaction time performance in sleepy people.

Caffeine is the most widely used stimulant to counteract sleepiness. However, little is known about any placebo effect of caffeine in sleepy people and the effect of suggestibility. Over a 95 min test period, and in a counterbalanced design, 16 young healthy adults underwent 3 x 30 min sessions at the psychomotor vigilance test (PVT), during an early afternoon 'dip' enhanced by a prior night's sleep restriction (5 h). On both occasions they were given a cup of a decaffeinated coffee; once when the participant was verbally primed to suggest the coffee was caffeinated (Placebo) and on the other

Reaction time variability and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: is increased reaction time variability specific to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder? Testing predictions from the default-mode interference hypothesis.

Increased reaction time variability (RTV) is one of the most replicable behavioral correlates of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, this may not be specific to ADHD but a more general marker of psychopathology. Here we compare RT variability in individuals with ADHD and those with other childhood internalizing and externalizing conditions both in terms of standard (i.e., the standard deviation of reaction time) and alternative indices that capture low-frequency oscillatory patterns in RT variations over time thought to mark periodic lapses of attention in ADHD. A total o

Reaction Time as a Proxy for Presence in Mixed Reality with Distraction.

Distractions in mixed reality (MR) environments can significantly influence user experience, affecting key factors such as presence, reaction time, cognitive load, and Break in Presence (BIP). Presence measures immersion, reaction time captures user responsiveness, cognitive load reflects mental effort, and BIP represents moments when attention shifts from the virtual to the real world, breaking immersion. While prior work has established that distractions impact these factors individually, the relationship between these constructs remains underexplored, particularly in MR environments where u

The Viewing Reaction Time as a Diagnostic Tool of Pedohebephilia in the Dunkelfeld.

Diagnosing pedohebephilia is fraught with obstacles given the tabooed nature of this sexual preference. The viewing reaction time effect (VRT) provides a non-intrusive indirect measure of sexual interest in minors. In forensic populations, the ability of the difference between the latencies while viewing child and adult sexual stimuli (VRT index) to discern child sexual offenders from a range of control groups has been ascertained meta-analytically. Given that the effect has been studied almost exclusively in forensic samples, its dependence or independence on prior overt (deviant) sexual beha

Anticipatory activity in the human thalamus is predictive of reaction times.

Responding to environmental stimuli in a fast manner is a fundamental behavioral capacity. The pace at which one responds is known to be predetermined by cortical areas, but it remains to be shown if subcortical structures also take part in defining motor swiftness. As the thalamus has previously been implicated in behavioral control, we tested if neuronal activity at this level could also predict the reaction time of upcoming movements. To this end we simultaneously recorded electrical brain activity from the scalp and the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) of the thalamus in patients undergo

The interactive effects of alcohol and temazepam on P300 and reaction time.

The present research investigated the separate and interactive effects of the minor tranquilizer, temazepam, and a low dose of alcohol on the amplitude and latency of P300 and on reaction time. Twenty-four participants completed four drug treatments in a repeated measures design. The four drug treatments, organised as a fully repeated 2 x 2 design, included a placebo condition, an alcohol only condition, a temazepam only condition, and an alcohol and temazepam combined condition. Event-related potentials were recorded from midline sites Fz, Cz, and Pz within an oddball paradigm. The results in

Saccadic reaction times in patients with frontal and parietal lesions.

The effect of unilateral circumscribed lesions in different areas of the frontal and parietal cortex on the distributions of saccadic reaction times (SRTs) was investigated in 32 patients under four stimulus conditions: (i) gap-random: a target light appeared 200 ms after extinction of a central fixation light randomly at 8 degrees either left or right; (ii) overlap-random: like (i), but the fixation light remained on ('overlap'); (iii) gap-simultaneous: two peripheral lights appeared simultaneously left and right 200 ms after the extinction of the fixation light, one predesignated by instruct

[The role of the epiphysis in forming a conditioned reaction to time in rats].

Pinealectomy impeded formation of time-conditioned reflex in the mode of fixed intervals. This was accompanied by a shortening of reaction latency and runs as well as by an increase in the number of intertrial responses. On the contrary, melatonin injection (0.1 mg/kg) facilitated conditioning by restricting the locomotion. It is suggested that pineal compounds have specific chronotropic properties.

Phonatory reaction times of rheumatoid arthritic and normal females.

This study examined the degree to which rheumatoid arthritis affects a speaker's ability to accomplish rapid vocal fold adjustments. The phonatory initiation, phonatory termination, and manual reaction times of 14 rheumatoid arthritic (RA) and 14 normal (NL) speakers were compared during a morning and an afternoon session. In addition, electroglottographic (EGG) measures (0 Hz-10 kHz bandwidth and 30 Hz-10 kHz bandwidth) allowed us to explore the components of each subject's reaction times. For two speech reaction-time tasks, temporal measures that reflected primarily mechanical adjustments of

A clinical method of evaluating simple reaction time and reaction accuracy is sensitive to a single dose of lorazepam.

RATIONALE: Benzodiazepines are useful and commonly prescribed. Unfortunately, they are associated with subtle but functionally significant neurocognitive side effects that increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents and falls. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether clinically feasible measures of simple reaction time and reaction accuracy are sensitive to a single dose of lorazepam. METHODS: Using a randomized, double-blind, crossover design, 26 healthy adults (13 women; age = 26.9 ± 8.2 yr) were given 1.0 mg lorazepam or placebo 90 minutes prior to two data collect

Effects of a Visual Reaction Training System on Footwork Agility, Reaction Time, and Movement Performance in U12 Badminton Players.

This study investigated the effectiveness of a Visual Reaction Training System (VRTS) for improving badminton-specific footwork performance in U12 players. Thirty-four participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group or a control group and completed a six-week training intervention. Training effectiveness was evaluated using star-footwork tests under fixed and random conditions, with reaction time and total movement time as outcome measures. Mixed-design ANOVA and ANCOVA were used for data analysis. The results showed that the experimental group achieved significantly greater impro

Validation of real-time polymerase chain reaction versus conventional polymerase chain reaction for diagnosis of brucellosis in cattle sera.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Different polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques have and are still being used for the direct detection of Brucella DNA in serum samples of different animal species and humans without being validated or properly validated, resulting in discrepancies. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the TaqMan Real-Time-PCR (RT-PCR) targeting the bcsp31 gene versus conventional PCR for the accurate diagnosis of brucellosis at the genus level in cattle sera. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and eighty-four serum samples were collected from bacteriologic

Physical fitness as a predictor of reaction time in soccer-playing children.

This study investigated the relationship between reaction time (RT) and physical fitness (PF) in soccer-playing children, focusing on core strength, agility, flexibility and power. A sample of 89 boys (8.7 ±  2.2 years) participated in this investigation were conveniently chosen in a Portuguese soccer team. All participants were players in a non-competitive level. Data on PF components were collected and analysed to explore their associations with RT. The results revealed negative correlations between abdominal strength, agility, and RT, suggesting that stronger core stability and higher agili

Machine Learning for Time-Resolved Selectivity Analysis in Methanol-To-Olefins Reaction.

The methanol-to-olefins (MTO) process, a cornerstone reaction in modern coal chemical industries, generates complex time-dependent product selectivity profiles that challenge conventional data-driven modeling. Although machine learning (ML) has emerged as a promising tool for MTO reaction analysis, existing approaches often oversimplify the temporal evolution of ethylene/propylene selectivity by treating it as scalar outputs rather than functional trajectories. In this study, we propose a unified ML framework for functional outputs to model time-resolved selectivity curves. The framework emplo
