Xeroderma pigmentosum: from genetics to hopes and realities of cutaneous gene therapy.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare genodermatosis transmitted as an autosomal and recessive trait. XP patients are highly photosensitive and prone to develop skin tumours in sun-exposed areas. Biochemical and genetic studies have demonstrated that nucleotide excision repair, the most versatile DNA repair mechanism, is deficient in XP cells, leading to ultraviolet-induced hypermutagenesis and a predisposition of XP patients to cancer. Cloning of XP genes responsible for the disease, together with the poor efficacy of classical pharmacological treatments, have motivated approaches towards cuta

Exploratory design and evaluation of a user interface for virtual reality exposure therapy.

Virtual reality exposure therapy is slowly becoming a viable option for therapists. For virtual reality systems to be used in the daily practice of therapists, their usability needs to be taken into consideration. This paper describes the current state-of-the-art in interfaces for these systems, and describes several proposals for improving the design of these systems. An exploratory evaluation is performed to assess the merits of aspects of the proposed user interface.

Virtual reality exposure therapy for the treatment of fear of flying: a controlled investigation.

Forty-five participants who refused to fly during a screening test and who also met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria for specific phobia, agoraphobia, or panic disorder with agoraphobia were randomly assigned to 5 sessions of either virtual reality exposure (VRE) or attention-placebo group treatment (GT). At posttreatment, 65% of VRE participants and 57% of GT participants flew during a test flight. Both groups showed significant improvement following treatment on standardized self-report measures of flight anxiety, with a better outcome for the VRE group on 4 of

Current trends and applications of virtual reality-assisted music therapy: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: With the proliferation of digital technologies, research on virtual reality-assisted music therapy (VR-assisted MT) has expanded across clinical, rehabilitation, and wellness contexts. This scoping review aimed to map the current applications and characteristics of VR-assisted MT, defined as interventions in which music or music therapy is intentionally integrated as a therapeutic component rather than used solely as incidental headset audio. METHODS: The review followed the scoping review framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley, was further informed by updated JBI guidance, a

Exposure Therapy in Mixed Reality for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Exposure therapy in virtual reality (VR) is well established for anxiety disorders. While early studies show promise for VR-based exposure and response prevention (ERP) in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a key challenge of traditional VR is the weak sense of presence, deemed crucial for effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of ERP in mixed reality (MERP). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized clinical trial (RCT) included 2 outpatient treatment groups, MERP vs self-guided ERP (SERP) from March 15, 2022, to October 26, 2024. Participa

Various Types of Virtual Reality-Based Therapy for Eating Disorders: A Systematic Review.

(1) Background: Interactive VR (virtual reality) environments (i.e., using three-dimensional graphics presented with a head-mounted display) have recently become a popular professional tool for the treatment of patients with eating disorders (EDs). However, there are no published review reports that have analyzed the original papers between 2015 and 2021, which additionally focused only on HMD (head-mounted display) 3DVR (three-dimensional virtual reality) exposure and included only three therapeutic categories for ED patients. (2) Methods: The EbscoHost and Scopus databases were searched to i

Treating patients with driving phobia by virtual reality exposure therapy - a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) is a promising treatment for patients with fear of driving. The present pilot study is the first one focusing on behavioral effects of VRET on patients with fear of driving as measured by a post-treatment driving test in real traffic. METHODS: The therapy followed a standardized manual including psychotherapeutic and medical examination, two preparative psychotherapy sessions, five virtual reality exposure sessions, a final behavioral avoidance test (BAT) in real traffic, a closing session, and two follow-up phone assessments after six and t

Analysis of distributed-collaborative activity during augmented reality exposure therapy for cockroach phobia.

Recent research presents Augmented Reality Exposure Therapy (ARET) for treatment of phobia of cockroaches as a potentially effective technique. However, to the authors' knowledge no studies have been published concerning the Human-Computer-Interaction issues of such a system. The aim of this paper is to report some preliminary data on how patients, therapists and an Augmented Reality system collaborate and interact during the therapeutic process. The results show that the therapeutic process is distributed between individuals (patient and therapist) and artifacts (e.g. AR cockroaches, a comput

Efficacy of virtual reality exposure therapy to treat driving phobia: a case report.

An AB case design was used to examine the efficacy of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) in treating driving phobia. After a one week baseline, the patient received three treatment sessions over a ten day period. Treatment included practice of four VR driving scenarios. Peak anxiety decreased within and across sessions. Ratings of anxiety and avoidance declined from pre-treatment and post-treatment, with gains maintained at seven month followup. Phobia-related interference in daily functioning similarly decreased. The results suggest that it would be useful to further evaluate the efficac

An affordable and immersive virtual reality-based exercise therapy in forward head posture.

Forward Head Posture (FHP) is one of the most commonly occurring musculoskeletal abnormalities. Despite exercise therapy being an effective approach for FHP treatment, it can be long, monotonous, and tedious. Virtual reality (VR) can be used as an innovative solution to address these challenges. We designed an affordable and immersive VR-based exercise therapy (VRET) system for FHP correction. The VRET contents (i.e., exercises and VR scenarios) were determined by physiotherapists and game designers at the focus group meetings. Hardware requirements include a VR box, smartphone, and sensors (i

Social interactions in virtual reality exposure therapy: A proof-of-concept pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research on virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) has demonstrated good treatment efficacy with regards to several anxiety disorders. Yet, there is lack of knowledge about the value of integrating interaction between clients and virtual humans in VRET. Such interaction might prove effective in treating psychological complaints that involve social interactions, such as social anxiety. METHODS: A VRET system specifically designed to expose clients with social anxiety disorder to anxiety provoking social situations was applied to 16 and 18 individuals with high and l

Virtual reality cognitive-behavior therapy for public speaking anxiety: one-year follow-up.

Public speaking anxiety (PSA) is a common social phobia. Although cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is the treatment of choice, difficulties arise with both in vivo and in vitro exposure (lack of therapist control, patient's inability to imagine, self-flooding, and a lack of confidentiality resulting from public exposure). Virtual reality CBT (VRCBT) enables a high degree of therapist control, thus overcoming these difficulties. In a previous publication, the authors reported on their findings that VRCBT (n = 28) and CBT (n = 30) groups were significantly more effective than a wait-list control

Virtual reality cognitive behavior therapy for public speaking anxiety: a randomized clinical trial.

Public speaking anxiety (PSA) is a common phobia. Although cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is preferred, difficulties arise with the exposure component (lack of therapist control, patient's inability to imagine, self-flooding, loss of confidentiality resulting from public exposure). Virtual reality CBT (VRCBT) enables a high degree of therapist control, thus overcoming these difficulties. This study examined whether VRCBT is an alternative to CBT. Participants with PSA were randomly assigned to VRCBT (28 participants), CBT (30 participants), and wait list control (WLC; 30 participants). VRCBT

Reflection of therapy progress in virtual reality for individuals affected by obesity: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Obesity is a major health challenge, requiring the development of more effective interventions. Setting realistic goals and developing detailed plans that anticipate potential challenges can be helpful strategies for bridging the intention-behavior gap. Immersive technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), are considered to further support closing this gap by reducing the distance to one's future self. METHODS: This study investigates a novel VR-supported reflection exercise as an additional treatment module within a conservative obesity treatment regime. It examines its feasibility,
