Estrogen and/or progestin administration to postmenopausal women with primary hyperparathyroidism lowers serum calcium. We measured cytosolic estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) by classical hormone-receptor binding techniques in parathyroid tissue removed from 10 men and 20 women, and ER by immunocytochemistry in tissue from an additional one man and seven women in order to ascertain whether these agents might exert a direct effect upon tissue responsible for hyperparathyroidism. ER were negative (< 3.1 fmol bound estradiol/10 mg tissue) in all 8 adenomas and 4 of 5 second

The study of tubal cytosol receptors for estradiol and progesterone shows that they are (in comparison with normal tubes) less in number in post-infection cases (proximal or distal) and increased in number in proximal endometriotic lesions. These variations are only significant for the progesterone receptors. These results are compared with those in the literature, and their implications, concerning hormone treatments used together with microsurgical tubo-plasties, are discussed.

This report describes the measurement of estrogen and progesterone receptors in cytosols and nuclear fractions from endocervical tissue components. Unoccupied cytosol estrogen receptor levels as determined by Scatchard analysis of [3H]-estradiol binding data indicated a single class of high affinity binding sites for the epithelial-stromal complex (KD = 0.74 x 10(-9) M). Binding was specific for estrogen (estradiol greater than estriol greater than estrone) and unaffected by desoxycorticosterone, dihydrotestosterone and progesterone. Assays for total estrogen receptor verified that 71.6 +/- 5.

The effects of estrogen and progesterone on uterine alpha-adrenergic receptors were investigated by direct receptor-binding studies. Immature female rabbits were primed with estrogen by intramuscular injections for 4 days. Other rabbits were primed with progesterone by injections of estrogen for 4 days followed by injections of progesterone for 4 days. The alpha adrenergic antagonist, [3H]dihydroergocryptine, was used to directly assess the number and affinity of alpha adrenergic receptors in membranes derived from estrogen-and progesterone-primed uteri. Membranes from estrogen-primed uteri co

OBJECTIVE: To compare the expression of estrogen receptor α (ERα) and progesterone receptor (PR) in myometrium and leiomyomata tissue, and to correlate their expression with symptoms of uterine leiomyomata.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, intraoperative biopsy samples of leiomyomata and adjacent myometrial specimens were obtained from premenopausal women with uterine leiomyomata treated at a center in Nigeria between September 2013 and August 2014. Immunohistochemistry for ERα and PR expression was performed on the samples. The immunoscores of both receptors were correlated with the size

The pathogenesis of thyroid cancer is complex. Iodium deficiency, genetic factors, sex, older age, irradiation in childhood, thyroid growth stimulating antibodies and epithelial growth factor possibly affect its development. Recent reports, also epidemiological, have shown that differentiated thyroid cancer (papillary, follicular, oxyphillic) is dependent on sex hormones, especially estrogens. This has prompted research into the presence of estrogens and progesterone, as well as androgen receptors (ER, PR and AR) in normal and neoplastic thyreocytes and estradiol content in thyroid tissue. The

Receptor content of human decidua in early pregnancy (weeks 6-12) was investigated. Fifty-three tissue samples were obtained from voluntary patients undergoing abortion and whose gestational age range from 6 to 12 weeks. Blood samples were drawn at the time of operation in order to measure circulating estradiol (E) and progesterone (P) concentrations. Tissue samples underwent first histological confirmation and then were analyzed for receptor content by immunohistochemistry (IH) and by the conventional ligand binding technique (LBA). Estrogen receptors (ER) appeared to be always undetectable b

Receptors for progesterone and oestrogen were measured in cytosol extracted from the endometrium of mares. Samples of endometrium were obtained from mares during the oestrous cycle and during other physiological and pathological states, and from mares with persistent endometritis. The concentration of binding sites was high around oestrus and early in dioestrus and was low by mid- to late dioestrus. Numbers of receptors were low in mares sampled on Day 15 of pregnancy and in mares in prolonged dioestrus, whereas receptor concentrations in ovariectomized mares were high. In 2 mares with endomet

Surgical specimens of 62 patients with fibrocystic disease, 39 with fibroadenoma and 11 with intraductal papilloma were evaluated with ER-ICA and PgR-ICA methods. Positive nuclear staining was only observed in the epithelial components. The myoepithelium, myofibroblasts, fibroblasts and the so called apocrine epithelium, however, did not contain steroid receptors. Some steroid receptor negative cases occurred among the atrophic and non-proliferating fibrocystic diseases. In the proliferating benign alterations, particularly in those considered preneoplastic, e.g. radial scar, ductal and lobula

Several immunohistological methods for the demonstration of progesterone receptors were tried on routinely processed paraffin wax sections of breast carcinoma, using Abbott's PgR-ICA monoclonal antibody. The best results were obtained with the avidin-biotin-immunoperoxidase complex method with no prior trypsinisation or DNAse digestion, and with imidazole added to the final diaminobenzidine developing solution. A simple semiquantitative scoring system was used to assess the staining results which were then compared with the results obtained by a standard dextran-coated charcoal biochemical ass

The ventromedial nuclei of the hypothalamus (VMN) are important for the control of feminine mating behavior, and hormone action within these nuclei has been causally related to behavior. Estradiol induces receptors for oxytocin in the VMN and in the area lateral to these nuclei over the course of 1 to 2 days, and progesterone causes, within 30 minutes of its application, a further increase in receptor binding and an expansion of the area covered by these receptors lateral to the VMN. The rapid progesterone effect appears to be a direct and specific effect of this steroid on the receptor or mem

Cytosolic receptors for estrogens and progesterone are studied using an exchange method in various types of benign breast diseases: fibroadenomas, fibrocystic mastosis, phylloid tumors and gynecomastias. The results show clearly that, contrary to breast carcinomas, receptors are generally not present in benign tumors. These results are statistically significant for all the women studied. Studying the pathological aspects of the tumors, it can be noted that the presence of receptors, is correlated with proliferation forms with large epithelial components. Furthermore, these results show that re

The endometrial stroma plays a decisive role in sustaining the gland epithelium along the menstrual cycle, and in preparing the microenvironment that allows embryo implantation. The stroma undergoes important changes during the menstrual cycle that affects both the cell number and differentiation. These changes are regulated by both estrogen and progesterone. Stromal sarcomas are extremely rare, occurring much less than any other uterine tumor. Their origin and biology are poorly understood. The purpose of this work was to try to learn more about the stromal physiology, and also to ascertain w

Using a rat monoclonal antibody raised against human progesterone receptor (PR) we have developed an immunocytochemical technique to detect PR in human normal and malignant breast tissue and have compared the distribution of this with that obtained by the conventional dextran-coated charcoal steroid-binding assay. Immunoreactive PR was detected exclusively in the nuclei of epithelial cells in 29/51 (56.9%) of breast cancers studied. There was an excellent correlation between the immunocytochemical and dextran-coated charcoal techniques, with concordance in 43/51 (84.3%) cases [regression coeff

INTRODUCTION: The progesterone receptor plays an essential role in uterine physiology and reproduction. Selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRMs) have emerged as a valuable treatment option for hormone dependent conditions like uterine fibroids, which have a major impact on women's quality of life. SPRMs offer potential for longer term medical treatment and thereby patients may avoid surgical intervention.
AREAS COVERED: The authors have reviewed the functional role of the progesterone receptor and its isoforms and their molecular mechanisms of action via genomic and non-genomic path

Estrogen and progesterone receptors from chick oviduct were compared with respect to their chromatographic behaviour on DEAE-cellulose and their DNA-binding ability to test the general validity of the subunit model from O'Malley and coworkers. Both hormone-receptor complexes can be separated on DEAE-cellulose into 2 components A and B. The 2 progesterone-receptor components appear to occur in equimolar amounts, whereas in the case of the estrogen receptor the amount of component A is always significantly larger. After trypsin treatment the estrogen component B disappears. The remaining A is a

The prepartum transition from a soft to ripening cervix is an inflammatory process that occurs well before birth when systemic progesterone is near peak concentration. This 2-part study first determined that stromal fibroblasts but not macrophages in the cervix have progesterone receptors (PRs). Neither the number of PR cells in cervix sections nor the relative abundance or ratio of nuclear PR isoforms (PR-A/PR-B) were diminished in mice between day 15 of pregnancy and term. Second in mice lacking PR-B ( Pgrtm20mc), the number of cells that expressed the PR-A isoform were maintained during thi

BACKGROUND: Ovarian carcinomas, usually associated with sex hormones dysregulation, are the leading cause of gynecological neoplastic death. In normal ovaries, hormones play a central role in regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. On the other hand, hormonal alterations also play a variety of roles in cancer. Stimulation by sex hormones potentially affects gene expression, invasiveness, cell growth and angiogenesis. Proteases of the "a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs" (ADAMTS) family are secreted by different cell types and become involved i
