A study into the nature and extent of polydrug use in driving recidivism behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Polydrug use has become a frequent pattern of drug consumption in Europe, and this is considered a particularly dangerous risk factor for impaired driving. In Italy, persons whose license has been revoked or suspended due to the use of psychoactive drugs can reapply for a new driving license, depending on the judgment of the relevant local medical committee (CML). To regain a revoked license, offenders must remain drug free throughout an observation period. An important problem with enforcement of impaired driving is recidivism. The aim of the present study is to analyze the influen

Examining the Impact of Jail Sanctions on Recidivism for Domestic Violence Probationers.

There has been a growth of domestic violence courts aimed at increasing offender accountability and victim safety. Although research has examined the effectiveness of these courts compared to typical court processing on recidivism, little is known about the mechanism of judicial accountability. Specifically, judicial review hearings, in which judges have discretion on whether and how to sanction for noncompliance, are common in these courts. This study examines whether incarceration sanctions for noncompliance affect recidivism among a sample of 347 probation review hearings in a Midwestern do

Interpersonal violence affecting the pediatric population: Patterns of injury and recidivism.

PURPOSE: We aim to describe interpersonal violence-related injury patterns in the pediatric trauma population and to identify predictors of recidivism. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis from a single institution, we included pediatric patients (≤17 years) treated (2006-2020) for traumatic injury related to interpersonal violence (IPV). Patient characteristics were compared among mechanism types and between recidivists and non recidivists using two sample t-tests, Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, and Pearson's chi-squared. Multivariate analysis was performed using logistic regression to identify

Effectiveness of Mental Health Courts in Reducing Recidivism: A Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Mental health courts (MHCs) were developed to address the overrepresentation of adults with mental illnesses in the U.S. criminal justice system through diversion into community-based treatment. Research on MHCs has proliferated in recent years, and there is a need to synthesize contemporary literature on MHC effectiveness. The authors conducted a meta-analytic investigation of the effect on criminal recidivism of adult MHC participation compared with traditional criminal processing. METHODS: Systematic search of three databases yielded 17 studies (N=16,129) published between 2004

Recidivism to uncontrolled blood pressure in patients with previously controlled hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Control of hypertension has improved nationally with focus on identifying and treating elevated blood pressures (BPs) to guideline recommended levels. However, once BP control is achieved, the frequency in which BP falls out of control and the factors associated with BP recidivism is unknown. In this retrospective cohort study conducted at 2 large, integrated health care systems we sought to examine rates and predictors of BP recidivism in adults with controlled hypertension. No change for methods, results and conclusion. METHODS: Patients with a prior diagnosis of hypertension ba

Does Change on the MOLEST and RAPE Scales Predict Sexual Recidivism?

The purpose of the current study was to examine whether the MOLEST and RAPE scales and change on these measures predicted sexual recidivism in a sample of 146 adult male sexual offenders who participated in a high-intensity treatment program while incarcerated. The majority of subjects had functional scores on the MOLEST and RAPE scales prior to treatment. Of those who had dysfunctional pre-treatment scores, the majority made significant gains. However, the MOLEST and RAPE scales did not significantly predict sexual recidivism. This was the case for pre-treatment scores, post-treatment scores,

Visual Reaction Time™ as a predictor of sexual offense recidivism.

In this study, we investigated the use of Visual Reaction Time™ (VRT™) for sexual interest in children to predict recidivism of sexual offenses among men who sexually abused children and men with other sexually deviant behaviors. The authors hypothesized that study participants with a higher VRT™ to stimuli of children would be more likely to sexually reoffend compared with those with a lower VRT™ to stimuli of children. Participants included 621 adult males on parole or probation for acting on a range of sexual paraphilias who sought outpatient treatment or evaluation at two separate therapis

Effectiveness of a mental health court in reducing criminal recidivism and violence.

OBJECTIVE: In response to the large-scale involvement of people with mental disorders in the criminal justice system, many communities have created specialized mental health courts in recent years. However, little research has been done to evaluate the criminal justice outcomes of such courts. This study evaluated whether a mental health court can reduce the risk of recidivism and violence by people with mental disorders who have been arrested. METHOD: A retrospective observational design was used to compare the occurrence of new criminal charges for 170 people who entered a mental health cou

[Administering toxins with antithyroids. Does this prevent recidivism of Graves disease? ].

There are three possibilities in the treatment of Graves-Basedow disease: antithyroids drugs, sub-total thyroidectomy and I131. In the USA there is a clear preference for definitive therapy with I131 once the thyrotoxicosis has been controlled. In Europe and Japan, however, the preference is for trying a conservative treatment, in the hope of inducing a permanent remission without recourse to radical methods. The most usual conservative pattern involves starting with high doses of antithyroids which are progressively reduced over the course of one year. The high rate of recurrence obtained wit

Efficacy of liver transplantation for alcoholic cirrhosis with respect to recidivism and compliance.

Many transplant centers are reluctant to accept alcoholic patients for OLT because of their supposed potential for alcoholic recidivism and poor compliance with the required immunosuppressive regimen, both of which result in graft failure. Only inconclusive data related to these arguments are available. From May 1982 to January 1993, 58 patients received OLT at our institution for end-stage cirrhosis, where alcohol was the only toxic component. The indication for OLT in these patients was considered with particular attention to recidivism and compliance. Overall survival in this group was 71%

[Therapy with transfer factor in a case of recidivating herpes with polymorphous erythema].

A young woman had recidivating herpes with erythema multiforme for several years. When conventional therapy failed to correct this condition she was treated with Transfer Factor (TF). Immunologic anomalies which had been registered previously became normal after the first application of TF. The skin lesions disappeared after the fourth dose. Six months later a new skin manifestation with immunologic alterations became apparent. They disappeared after two doses of TF. A year and a half later the patient has no lesions and the immunologic parameters, which were monitored throughout this period,

Emergency Department-initiated Naltrexone for Alcohol Use Disorder: Association with Recidivism.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) contributes to significant healthcare costs, disease, emergency department (ED) crowding, and recidivism. Naltrexone is a treatment for AUD that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and holds promise as a pharmacologic intervention for ED patients with AUD. We hypothesized that subjects who received naltrexone in the ED would have associated reduced recidivism in the 30 days after treatment. METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of an AUD quality program comparing ED visits in the 30 days before with 30 days after initiat

Explaining Male Sex Offender Recidivism: Accounting for Differences in Correctional Supervision.

PURPOSE: Contrary to public opinion, empirical studies have consistently shown that persons convicted of a sexual offense (PCSO) are less likely to recidivate with a general offense. While researchers often point toward the surreptitiousness of sexual offending to explain low rates of recidivism, this paper tests a novel explanation: SOs recidivate at lower rates than persons convicted of a non-sexual offense (PCNSO) because they are more often revoked to prison before they are able to commit a new crime, perhaps owing to more restrictive post-release supervision guidelines. METHODS: Using a

Recidivism following childhood maltreatment necessitating inpatient care in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Non-accidental trauma (NAT) is one of the common causes of injury in children in the United States (US). Abuse and maltreatment affect 2 per 100,000 children annually and may go unrecognized. The aim of this study to quantify the recidivistic nature of NAT in the US pediatric population. METHODS: The National Readmissions Database (2007-2015) was queried for pediatric (≤18y) trauma patients. Children presenting for non-accidental trauma were further identified. Data was obtained on demographic, clinical, and hospital-level characteristics. Body regions with an Abbreviated Injury

Posttraumatic stress, panic disorder, violence, and recidivism among local jail detainees.

PURPOSE: Most research on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and offending has been conducted with special populations (e.g. veterans and female inmates) and generally overlooks the additive effect of panic disorder (PD) in offending patterns. The purpose of this paper is to assess the prevalence of PTSD and PD among jail inmates, while simultaneously examining the relationships between these disorders, offending types and frequency. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A random sample of adults recently booked into a local county jail participated in the Comprehensive Addictions and Psychological

Antipsychotic medication adherence, cocaine use, and recidivism among a parolee sample.

This study examined the independent and interactive associations between cocaine use and antipsychotic medication adherence in predicting 12 month criminal recidivism among a sample of mentally ill parolees (N = 200). Consistent with prior research, cocaine use (based on hair assays) was associated with more than a threefold increase (relative to non-cocaine users) in the likelihood of a parolee being returned to custody during the follow-up period. Although medication adherence (based on urine specimens) was not independently associated with a significant reduction in recidivism risk, the int
