An imputation method for single-cell RNA sequencing data based on a parallel gated recurrent unit neural network.

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) generates high-dimensional transcriptomic data but is severely affected by dropout events, which obscure true gene-gene relationships. These missing values introduce bias into downstream analyses, complicate data processing, and reduce analytical efficiency. Therefore, accurate imputation of dropout events is essential for recovering genuine expression signals and improving the reliability of scRNA-seq studies. In this work, we propose a novel scRNA-seq data imputation method, imputation with a parallel gated recurrent unit neural network (IPGRU), based o

MULGONET: An interpretable neural network framework to integrate multi-omics data for cancer recurrence prediction and biomarker discovery.

Multi-omics cancer data provides complementary views of tumorigenesis and progression. Technical challenges exist in integrating these heterogeneous data into deep learning models to better understand tumorigenesis and predict cancer recurrence. We herein propose a novel end-to-end deep learning method (MULGONET) for cancer recurrence prediction and biomarker discovery. First, MULGONET can effectively solve the curse of dimensionality and the lack of model interpretability in multi-omics data integration. Second, it explores interactions and regulatory relationships between genes and GO terms,

Extended Modelling of Molecular Calcium Signalling in Platelets by Combined Recurrent Neural Network and Partial Least Squares Analyses.

Platelets play critical roles in haemostasis and thrombosis. The platelet activation process is driven by agonist-induced rises in cytosolic [Ca2+]i, where the patterns of Ca2+ responses are still incompletely understood. In this study, we developed a number of techniques to model the [Ca2+]i curves of platelets from a single blood donor. Fura-2-loaded platelets were quasi-simultaneously stimulated with various agonists, i.e., thrombin, collagen, or CRP, in the presence or absence of extracellular Ca2+ entry, secondary mediator effects, or Ca2+ reuptake into intracellular stores. To understand

Improved tactile speech robustness to background noise with a dual-path recurrent neural network noise-reduction method.

Many people with hearing loss struggle to understand speech in noisy environments, making noise robustness critical for hearing-assistive devices. Recently developed haptic hearing aids, which convert audio to vibration, can improve speech-in-noise performance for cochlear implant (CI) users and assist those unable to access hearing-assistive devices. They are typically body-worn rather than head-mounted, allowing additional space for batteries and microprocessors, and so can deploy more sophisticated noise-reduction techniques. The current study assessed whether a real-time-feasible dual-path

An innovative supervised longitudinal learning procedure of recurrent neural networks with temporal data augmentation: Insights from predicting fetal macrosomia and large-for-gestational age.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal data in health informatics studies often present challenges due to sparse observations from each subject, limiting the application of contemporary deep learning for prediction. This issue is particularly relevant in predicting birthweight, a crucial factor in identifying conditions such as macrosomia and large-for-gestational age (LGA). Previous approaches have relied on empirical formulas for estimated fetal weights (EFWs) from ultrasound measurements and mixed-effects models for interim predictions. METHOD: The proposed novel supervised longitudinal learning procedu

A vision transformer with recurrent neural network-based fall activity recognition system for disabled persons in smart IoT environments.

Falls are the primary basis of autonomy loss, injuries, and deaths among disabled persons and the elderly. With the development of technologies, falls are extensively researched by scientists to diminish severe consequences and adverse effects. Reliable fall recognition is crucial in humanoid robotics and healthcare research, as it helps minimize damage. The detection methods for falls are classified into three categories: wearable sensors, ambient sensors, and vision-based sensors. Over the last few years, computer vision and deep learning (DL) have been widely applied to fall detection syste

A Case Series in Position-Aware Myoelectric Prosthesis Control Using Recurrent Convolutional Neural Network Classification with Transfer Learning.

Position-aware myoelectric prosthesis controllers require long, data-intensive training routines. Transfer Learning (TL) might reduce training burden. A TL model can be pre-trained using forearm muscle signal data from many individuals to become the starting point for a new user. A recurrent convolutional neural network (RCNN)-based classifier has already been shown to benefit from TL in offline analysis (95% accuracy). The present real-time study tested whether an RCNN-based classification controller with TL (RCNN-TL) could reduce training burden, offer improved device control (per functional

Neural network modeling for prediction of recurrence, progression, and hormonal non-remission in patients following resection of functional pituitary adenomas.

PURPOSE: Functional pituitary adenomas (FPAs) cause severe neuro-endocrinopathies including Cushing's disease (CD) and acromegaly. While many are effectively cured following FPA resection, some encounter disease recurrence/progression or hormonal non-remission requiring adjuvant treatment. Identification of risk factors for suboptimal postoperative outcomes may guide initiation of adjuvant multimodal therapies. METHODS: Patients undergoing endonasal transsphenoidal resection for CD, acromegaly, and mammosomatotroph adenomas between 1992 and 2019 were identified. Good outcomes were defined as

Portable Sleep Apnea Syndrome Screening and Event Detection Using Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Network.

Obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is characterized by repeated airflow partial reduction or complete cessation due to upper airway collapse during sleep. OSAHS can induce frequent awake and intermittent hypoxia that is associated with hypertension and cardiovascular events. Full-channel Polysomnography (PSG) is the gold standard for diagnosing OSAHS; however, this PSG evaluation process is unsuitable for home screening. To solve this problem, a measuring module integrating abdominal and thoracic triaxial accelerometers, a pulsed oximeter (SpO2) and an electrocardiogram sensor w

Spatio-Temporal Tolerance of Visuo-Tactile Illusions in Artificial Skin by Recurrent Neural Network with Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity.

Perceptual illusions across multiple modalities, such as the rubber-hand illusion, show how dynamic the brain is at adapting its body image and at determining what is part of it (the self) and what is not (others). Several research studies showed that redundancy and contingency among sensory signals are essential for perception of the illusion and that a lag of 200-300 ms is the critical limit of the brain to represent one's own body. In an experimental setup with an artificial skin, we replicate the visuo-tactile illusion within artificial neural networks. Our model is composed of an associat

Automated and Continuous Fatigue Monitoring in Construction Workers Using Forearm EMG and IMU Wearable Sensors and Recurrent Neural Network.

About 40% of the US construction workforce experiences high-level fatigue, which leads to poor judgment, increased risk of injuries, a decrease in productivity, and a lower quality of work. Therefore, it is essential to monitor fatigue to reduce its adverse effects and prevent long-term health problems. However, since fatigue demonstrates itself in several complex processes, there is no single standard measurement method for fatigue detection. This study aims to develop a system for continuous workers' fatigue monitoring by predicting the aerobic fatigue threshold (AFT) using forearm muscle ac

Towards the Segmentation and Classification of White Blood Cell Cancer Using Hybrid Mask-Recurrent Neural Network and Transfer Learning.

Inside the bone marrow, plasma cells are created, and they are a type of white blood cells. They are made from B lymphocytes. Antigens are produced by plasma cells to combat bacteria and viruses and prevent inflammation and illness. Multiple myeloma is a plasma cell cancer that starts in the bone marrow and causes the formation of abnormal plasma cells. Multiple myeloma is firmly identified by examining bone marrow samples under a microscope for myeloma cells. To diagnose myeloma cells, pathologists have to be very selective. Furthermore, because the ultimate decision is based on human sight a

Feature Extraction Based on Local Histogram with Unequal Bins and a Recurrent Neural Network for the Diagnosis of Kidney Diseases from CT Images.

Kidney disease remains one of the most common ailments worldwide, with cancer being one of its most common forms. Early diagnosis can significantly increase the good prognosis for the patient. The development of an artificial intelligence-based system to assist in kidney cancer diagnosis is crucial because kidney illness is a global health concern, and there are limited nephrologists qualified to evaluate kidney cancer. Diagnosing and categorising different forms of renal failure presents the biggest treatment hurdle for kidney cancer. Thus, this article presents a novel method for detecting a

A novel hybrid convolutional and recurrent neural network model for automatic pituitary adenoma classification using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI.

Pituitary adenomas, ranging from subtle microadenomas to mass-effect macroadenomas, pose diagnostic challenges for radiologists due to increasing scan volumes and the complexity of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI interpretation. A hybrid CNN-LSTM model was trained and validated on a multi-center dataset of 2,163 samples from Tehran and Babolsar, Iran. Transfer learning and preprocessing techniques (e.g., Wiener filters) were utilized to improve classification performance for microadenomas (< 10 mm) and macroadenomas (> 10 mm). The model achieved 90.5% accuracy, an area under the receiver operati

Deep Learning Recurrent Neural Network for Concussion Classification in Adolescents Using Raw Electroencephalography Signals: Toward a Minimal Number of Sensors.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are showing increasing promise as decision support tools in medicine and particularly in neuroscience and neuroimaging. Recently, there has been increasing work on using neural networks to classify individuals with concussion using electroencephalography (EEG) data. However, to date the need for research grade equipment has limited the applications to clinical environments. We recently developed a deep learning long short-term memory (LSTM) based recurrent neural network to classify concussion using raw, resting state data using 64 EEG channels and achieved hi

DeepBTS: Prediction of Recurrence-free Survival of Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Using a Time-binned Deep Neural Network.

Accurate prediction of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) prognosis after surgery remains challenging. The Cox proportional hazard (PH) model is widely used, however, there are some limitations associated with it. In this study, we developed novel neural network models called binned time survival analysis (DeepBTS) models using 30 clinico-pathological features of surgically resected NSCLC patients (training cohort, n = 1,022; external validation cohort, n = 298). We employed the root-mean-square error (in the supervised learning model, s- DeepBTS) or negative log-likelihood (in the semi-unsupe

Predicting the Feasibility of Copper(I)-Catalyzed Alkyne-Azide Cycloaddition Reactions Using a Recurrent Neural Network with a Self-Attention Mechanism.

The copper(I)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction, a major click chemistry reaction, is widely employed in drug discovery and chemical biology. However, the success rate of the CuAAC reaction is not satisfactory as expected, and in order to improve its performance, we developed a recurrent neural network (RNN) model to predict its feasibility. First, we designed and synthesized a structurally diverse library of 700 compounds with the CuAAC reaction to obtain experimental data. Then, using reaction SMILES as input, we generated a bidirectional long-short-term memory with a sel
