Inhibitory effects of combined agonist and antagonist muscle vibration on H-reflex in man.

Vibration alters human sensory motor performance. Changes in the excitability of spinal reflex mechanisms may be responsible for the majority of the observed alterations. We studied the differential effects of vibration locally applied to gastrocnemius soleus and tibialis anterior muscles separately and to both muscles simultaneously. From the results, it is deduced that combined agonist and antagonist muscle vibration may lead to summative interaction between pre- and postsynaptic inhibition at motoneuronal level. Whole-body vibration is taken to mean a combination of synchronous vibrations a

[Excitability of spinal alpha-motoneurons in patients with neurologic syndromes of lumbar osteochondrosis].

The excitability of spinal alpha-motoneurons was studied by assessing the monosynaptic H-reflex and the "intensity-duration" curve in 77 patients with neurologic syndromes of lumbar osteochondrosis (lumboischialgia, paralytic ischias, radicular and caudal syndromes) and in 18 practically healthy individuals. The excitability of alpha-motoneurons was found to be elevated in lumboischialgia and decreased in paralytic ischias, radicular and especially caudal syndromes. These changes play an important role in the mechanism of the development of motor disorders.

The formation of appropriate central and peripheral connexions by foreign sensory neurones of the bullfrog.

1. The ability of foreign sensory neurones to form novel reflex pathways was studied in bullfrogs by removing, during early larval stages of development, the dorsal root ganglion (d.r.g. 2) that normally provides the entire sensory innervation of the front limb.2. After the operation these tadpoles metamorphosed into frogs that responded to sensory stimuli and had nearly normal use of the limb. Sensation in the limb was mediated by sensory neurones located in an adjacent ganglion (d.r.g. 3); these neurones normally never grow into the arm.3. These neurones were shown, by labelling with horsera

Inhibition of masseteric electromyographic activity during oral respiration.

Although the effects of oral respiration on the growth and development of craniofacial structure have been studied previously, little is known about how altered respiration affects the activity of the jaw-closing muscles. Obstruction of the nasal airway in the cat significantly inhibited the masseteric stretch reflex and discharges of masseteric motor units but did not affect the electromyographic activity of the diaphragm. This inhibition was greater during inspiration than during expiration. In addition, the amplitude of the masseteric monosynaptic reflex elicited by electrical stimulation o

Effects of GABAergic drugs on the recovery of reflex potentials after spinal cord ischemia in cats.

Effects of GABAergic drugs on the recovery of reflex potentials after spinal cord ischemia were examined in anesthethized spinal cats. Monosynaptic reflex (MSR) and polysynaptic reflex (PSR) potentials, elicited by electrical stimulation of the tibial nerve in spinal cats, were recorded from the lumbo-sacral ventral root. The spinal reflex potentials were immediately depressed by occlusion of the thoracic aorta and the bilateral mammary arteries for 10 min. The potentials recovered gradually to the control level within 90 min after reperfusion. Pretreatment with bicuculline (0.3 mg/kg, i.v.),

Absence of respiration modulation of carotid sinus nerve inputs to nucleus tractus solitarius neurons receiving arterial chemoreceptor inputs.

The reflex responses to activation of the arterial chemoreceptors are dependent upon when in the respiratory cycle the chemoreceptor stimulus is given. To determine if the respiratory modulation of the chemoreflex occurs within the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), intracellular recordings were obtained in pentobarbital-anesthetized, paralyzed and mechanically ventilated cats, from 22 non-respiratory NTS cells which were depolarized following activation of the ipsilateral carotid body chemoreceptors (by close arterial injection of < 100 microliters CO2 saturated bicarbonate). Activation of the

Sensory afferent and hypoxia-mediated activation of nucleus tractus solitarius neurons that project to the rostral ventrolateral medulla.

The nucleus tractus solitarius (nTS) of the brainstem receives sensory afferent inputs, processes that information, and sends projections to a variety of brain regions responsible for influencing autonomic and respiratory output. The nTS sends direct projections to the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM), an area important for cardiorespiratory reflexes and homeostasis. Since the net reflex effect of nTS processing ultimately depends on the properties of output neurons, we determined the characteristics of these RVLM-projecting nTS neurons using electrophysiological and immunohistochemical te

Permanent alterations of spinal cord reflexes following nerve lesion in newborn rats.

Sciatic nerve lesion in newborn rats is known to cause degeneration of a large number of axotomized motoneurones and spinal ganglion cells. Some of the surviving motoneurones exhibit abnormal firing properties and the projection pattern of central terminals of sensory neurones is altered. We report here on long-term changes in spinal cord reflexes in adult rats following neonatal nerve crush. In acutely spinalized and anaesthetized adult rats 4-6 months old in which the sciatic nerve had been crushed on one side at birth, the tibial nerve, common peroneal nerve or sural nerve were stimulated o

Neuropharmacology of sedatives and anxiolytics.

Sedative drugs are intended to cause various degrees of drowsiness. Animal experiments indicate that barbiturates induce these effects primarily by depression of the reticular activating system in the rostral brainstem. This in turn potentiates the thalamic recruiting system, thereby inducing 'barbiturate bursts' in the EEG. Anxiolytic drugs are intended to reduce anxiety or tension at doses which do not cause sedation or sleep. Propanediols may depress deactivating centers in the caudal brainstem, thereby releasing the activating centers in the rostral brainstem and depressing the thalamic re

Myoclonus in a patient with spinal cord transection. Possible involvement of the spinal stepping generator.

A patient with clinically complete cervical spinal cord transection developed rhythmic myoclonic movements of the trunk and lower limbs, demonstrating that, in man, such movements can be generated within the spinal cord itself when deprived of supraspinal control. Electromyographic (EMG) recordings used to define the features of the myoclonus, which had a frequency of 0.3-0.6 Hz, was bilaterally symmetric, and involved extensor muscles. The EMG bursts always appeared in phase in all muscles involved. Peripheral stimulation of flexor reflex afferents (FRA) could induce, slow or interrupt the rh

Altered patterns of reflex excitability subsequent to contusion injury of the rat spinal cord.

1. The present study investigated regulation of reflex excitability after experimental contusion injury of the spinal cord. 2. Four measures of H-reflex excitability were evaluated in normal rats and at 6, 28, and 60 days after contusion injury at the T8 level: 1) reflex thresholds, 2) slope of the reflex recruitment curves, 3) maximal plantar H-reflex/maximal plantar M-response (Hmax/Mmax) ratios, and 4) rate-sensitive depression (i.e., the decrease in reflex magnitude relative to repetition rate). 3. Tested as a function of the afferent volley magnitude, the thresholds for reflex initiation

[Tendon areflexia in congenital myopathies accompanied by atrophy of type I fibers. Electrophysiologic study].

A predominance and/or an atrophy of type I fibers and a loss of deep tendon reflexes are often observed in different types of congenital myopathy. Various data indicate that both findings can be linked: dysfunction of the myotatic reflex can induce predominant involvement of type I fibers. In order to specify the mechanism of the loss of tendon reflex, an investigation of the Hoffmann reflex (H reflex) was performed in one case of centronuclear myopathy and in one case of congenital type fiber disproportion with type I hypertrophy. The Achilles tendon reflex was absent but the H reflex showed

[Diagnostic significance of the H-reflex in traumatic lesions of the spinal cord].

The study of H-reflexes, their latent periods and M-responses involved 69 patients with trauma to the spinal cord. The results showed that these parameters were normal in 39 patients. The remaining patients lacked H- or M-responses, which was indicative of inhibition of neural and muscular activity due to disorders of hemodynamic and metabolic processes in the spinal cord or in muscles of the lower extremities. The study of latent periods and the speed of impulse conduction along the peripheral nerve revealed that after an injury to the spinal cord some patients presented impairment of impulse

Neurophysiology of epidurally evoked spinal cord reflexes in clinically motor-complete posttraumatic spinal cord injury.

Increased use of epidural Spinal Cord Stimulation (eSCS) for the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury (SCI) has highlighted the need for a greater understanding of the properties of reflex circuits in the isolated spinal cord, particularly in response to repetitive stimulation. Here, we investigate the frequency-dependence of modulation of short- and long-latency EMG responses of lower limb muscles in patients with SCI at rest. Single stimuli could evoke short-latency responses as well as long-latency (likely polysynaptic) responses. The short-latency component was enhanced at low frequencies

Absence of synergy for monosynaptic Group I inputs between abdominal and internal intercostal motoneurons.

Internal intercostal and abdominal motoneurons are strongly coactivated during expiration. We investigated whether that synergy was paralleled by synergistic Group I reflex excitation. Intracellular recordings were made from motoneurons of the internal intercostal nerve of T8 in anesthetized cats, and the specificity of the monosynaptic connections from afferents in each of the two main branches of this nerve was investigated. Motoneurons were shown by antidromic excitation to innervate three muscle groups: external abdominal oblique [EO; innervated by the lateral branch (Lat)], the region of

Variations in the Hoffmann reflex recovery curve related to clinical manifestations of schizoaffective disorder.

Recovery curves of the Hoffmann reflex (H reflex) were measured in both legs of 10 unmedicated inpatients with schizoaffective disorder, depressed type. Neither recovery curve height of the right leg nor that of the left leg was significantly correlated with clinical psychopathology, although a consistent negative relation was noted between recovery curve height of the left leg and psychopathology. Right-left differences in recovery curve height significantly correlated with both Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression ratings of psychopathology, such that relat
