Cross-sensory interference assessment after exposure to noise shows different effects in the blue crab olfactory and sound sensing capabilities.

Underwater noise pollution is an increasing threat to marine ecosystems. Marine animals use sound in communication and orientation processes. The introduction of anthropogenic noise in their habitat can interfere with sound production and reception as well as with the acquisition of vital information through other sensory systems. In the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), the statocyst is responsible for acoustic perception, and it is housed at the base of its first pair of antennae (antennule). The sensilla of the distal part of these antennule hosts the olfactory system, which is key for forag

Hepatoprotective effects of astraglus root.

Oral administration of an ethanol extract of the root of Astragalus membranaceus alleviated liver injury induced by stilbenemidine. Pre-administration in mice reduced elevated SGPT levels and subacute toxicity of stilbenemidine, decreased pentobarbital-induced loss of righting reflex and protected hepatic cells from pathological changes.

Remimazolam- and dexmedetomidine-based three-drug mixtures refine injectable anesthesia in mice.

The medetomidine-midazolam-butorphanol mixture (MMB) is widely used for injectable anesthesia in mice but is associated with delayed induction, prolonged recovery, impaired oxygenation, and post-anesthetic hypothermia. We investigated whether substituting midazolam with remimazolam, alone or together with replacing medetomidine with dexmedetomidine, improved the anesthetic profile. Male C57BL/6JJcl mice (n=8/group) received intraperitoneal MMB, medetomidine-remimazolam-butorphanol (MRB), or dexmedetomidine-remimazolam-butorphanol (dMRB). Induction was assessed by times to immobilization and lo

Contrasting Effects of the γ-Aminobutyric Acid Type A Receptor β3 Subunit N265M Mutation on Loss of Righting Reflexes Induced by Etomidate and the Novel Anesthetic Barbiturate R-mTFD-MPAB.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that etomidate modulates γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors by binding at the β-α subunit interface within the transmembrane domain of receptors that incorporate β2 or β3 subunits. Introducing an asparagine-to-methionine (N265M) mutation at position 265 of the β3 subunit, which sits within the etomidate-binding site, attenuates the hypnotic effect of etomidate in vivo. It was reported recently that the photoactivatable barbiturate R-mTFD-MPAB also acts on γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors primarily by binding to a homologous site at the γ-β interfac

Extrasynaptic GABAA receptors in central medial thalamus mediate anesthesia in rats.

Neuronal depression in the thalamus underlies anesthetic-induced loss of consciousness, while the precise sub-thalamus nuclei and molecular targets involved remain to be elucidated. The present study investigated the role of extrasynaptic GABAA receptors in the central medial thalamic nucleus (CM) in anesthesia induced by gaboxadol (THIP) and diazepam (DZP) in rats. Local lesion of the CM led to a decrease in the duration of loss of righting reflex induced by THIP and DZP. CM microinjection of THIP but not DZP induced anesthesia. The absence of righting reflex in THIP-treated rats was consiste

Effects of in utero meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid with calcium and ascorbic acid on lead-induced fetal development.

To examine the effects of meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) on developmental toxicity resulting from exposure to lead in utero, female albino mice were exposed to lead by drinking water contaminated with lead acetate for 4 weeks. After the cessation of lead exposure, female mice were supplemented by gavage with saline solution, DMSA, or DMSA and calcium as well as ascorbic acid from the fourth day of gestation until parturition, respectively. Lead levels (blood, liver, and bone) were measured at birth. Pups were then tested about neural development including surface righting reflex, clif

Brain temperature and ethanol sensitivity in C57 mice: a radiotelemetric study.

This study investigated the relationship between ethanol sensitivity and brain temperature using radiotelemetric techniques. Radiotelemetric brain probes were implanted in the lateral cerebral ventricle of C57BL/6 mice. Rectal and brain temperatures, duration of loss of righting reflex (LORR), and blood and brain ethanol concentrations at the return of righting reflex (RORR) were measured following intraperitoneal (IP) injection with 3.6 g/kg ethanol and exposure to 12, 15, 22 or 34 degrees C. Rectal and brain temperatures were significantly correlated in untreated and intoxicated mice. Brain

Activities of thiamine-dependent enzymes in two experimental models of thiamine-deficiency encephalopathy: 1. The pyruvate dehydrogenase complex.

Chronic thiamine deprivation in the rat leads to selective neuropathological damage in brainstem structures whereas treatment with the central thiamine antagonist, pyrithiamine, results in more widespread damage. In order to further elucidate the neurochemical mechanisms responsible for this selective damage, the thiamine-dependent enzyme complex pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDHC) was measured in 10 brain structures in the rat during progression of thiamine deficiency produced by chronic deprivation or by pyrithiamine treatment. Feeding of a thiamine-deficient diet to adult rats resulted in 5-7 wee

[Acute toxicity and the central effect of 1-(m-chlorophenyl)-3-N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl-5-methoxypyrazole (PZ-177)].

In a previous paper, we reported that PZ-177 had potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. In the present work, acute toxicity and action of PZ-177 on the central nervous system were tested in comparison with PZ-222, one of metabolites of PZ-177, and mepirizole. Acute toxicity of PZ-177 was slightly less than that of aminopyrine and the same as that of mepirizole in mice and rats. PZ-177 produced from sedation to loss of righting reflex with the increase of dose. At a low dose with which the righting reflex was hot lost, PZ-177 decreased spontaneous locomotion of mice in the Animex te

Changes in Neuronal Density of the Sensorimotor Cortex and Neurodevelopmental Behaviour in Neonatal Mice with Kaolin-Induced Hydrocephalus.

INTRODUCTION: Hydrocephalus is a disorder in which the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid is altered in a manner that leads to its accumulation in the ventricles and subarachnoid space. Its impact on the neuronal density and networks in the overlying cerebral cortex in a time-dependent neonatal hydrocephalic process is largely unknown. We hypothesize that hydrocephalus will affect the cytoarchitecture of the cerebral cortical mantle of neonatal hydrocephalic mice, which will in turn modify sensorimotor processing and neurobehaviour. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to probe the effect

Sex chromosome and gonadal hormone contributions to binge-like and aversion-resistant ethanol drinking behaviors in Four Core Genotypes mice.

INTRODUCTION: While substantial research has focused on the contribution of sex hormones to driving elevated levels of alcohol drinking in female rodents, fewer studies have investigated how genetic influences may underlie sex differences in this behavior. METHODS: We used the Four Core Genotypes (FCG) mouse model to explore the contribution of sex chromosome complement (XX/XY) and gonad type [ovaries (Sry-)/testes (Sry+)] to ethanol (EtOH) consumption and quinine-resistant drinking across two voluntary self-administration tasks: limited access consumption in the home cage and an operant resp

A Neural Circuit from the Paraventricular Thalamus to the Bed Nucleus of the Stria Terminalis for the Regulation of States of Consciousness during Sevoflurane Anesthesia in Mice.

BACKGROUND: The neural circuitry underlying sevoflurane-induced modulation of consciousness is poorly understood. This study hypothesized that the paraventricular thalamus bed nucleus of the stria terminalis pathway plays an important role in regulating states of consciousness during sevoflurane anesthesia. METHODS: Rabies virus-based transsynaptic tracing techniques were employed to reveal the neural pathway from the paraventricular thalamus to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. This study investigated the role of this pathway in sevoflurane anesthesia induction, maintenance, and emerg

ISOFLURANE ANESTHESIA IN BUDWING PRAYING MANTISES (PARASPHENDALE AGRIONINA).

Praying mantises have gained increasing popularity as pets and may be anesthetized to allow morphological identification and clinical procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects and anesthetic-related complications of isoflurane in oxygen in 15 client-owned budwing mantises (Parasphendale agrionina) undergoing photographic identification. Each mantis was placed in a self-constructed anesthetic chamber and exposed to a mixture of approximately 5% isoflurane in oxygen until anesthetic induction was achieved. Time to anesthetic induction, time to recovery from anesthesia, and qu

Inductive effect of Zoletil on cystathionine β-synthase expression in the rat brain.

Zoletil is an anesthetic and immobilizing drug that has been used in the veterinary field for over 50 years; however, the effect of Zoletil, or its constituents, on brain cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) remains unknown. Here, we aimed to determine the effect of Zoletil on rat brain CBS by administering a single intraperitoneal injection of the drug and examining hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and CBS levels in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and thalamus following three distinct behavioral phenotypes associated with the sedation procedure (e.g., loss of the righting reflex, return of the righting ref

Effects of the orexin receptor 2 agonist danavorexton on emergence from general anaesthesia and opioid-induced sedation, respiratory depression, and analgesia in rats and monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Delayed emergence from general anaesthesia, opioid-induced sedation, and opioid-induced respiratory depression is associated with perioperative complications. We characterised the preclinical effects of the orexin receptor 2 (OX2R)-selective agonist danavorexton (TAK-925) on emergence from anaesthesia and reversal of fentanyl-induced sedation, respiratory depression, and analgesia. METHODS: Emergence from isoflurane- or propofol-induced anaesthesia and fentanyl-induced sedation were investigated by righting reflex, rotarod, and electroencephalography in rats or monkeys. Contactless Acoustic Trapping of Hoverflies for Behavioral Studies.

Studying the sensorimotor response of flying insects is usually done in tethered conditions. The righting reflex, for example, is studied with insects that are released either from a rigid or a magnetic tether. The attached tether or magnet may, however, induce proprioceptive biases and behavioral artifacts through physical contact and additional mass or inertia. Here, we propose a contactless tether apparatus based on acoustic levitation. It relies on the emission of ultrasonic waves on both sides of the device, creating standing pressure waves-visualized using the schlieren technique-that en

Alterations in sensorimotor development: relationship to postnatal alcohol exposure.

The sensory, motor, and physical development of rats reared by dams, artificially reared on milk formula alone, or on milk formula combined with alcohol was examined. The rats given alcohol received 6.6 g/kg/day, which was administered either as 12 fractions distributed uniformly over 24 hours and resulted in stable blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of 85 mg/dl, or condensed into 4 fractions over 8 hours and resulted in maximum and minimum BACs of 411 mg/dl and 45 mg/dl, respectively. Pups were reared artificially from postnatal days 4 to 12 with alcohol exposure occurring on days 4 to 10. A
