Behavioural treatment to reduce sleep problems in children with autism or fragile X syndrome.

There are few well-controlled, published evaluations of sleep interventions for children with developmental disabilities. This paper evaluates a parent training programme using behavioural principles to reduce sleep problems in children with autism or fragile X syndrome (FXS). Training included bedtime routines, reinforcement, effective instructions, partner support, and extinction (removing reinforcement to reduce a behaviour). Programme efficacy was demonstrated by using a multiple baseline across-participant design. Social validity was also assessed. Five children with autism and one with A

Art as a scaffold for social cognition.

The idea that art connects us to others is culturally compelling, yet empirical evidence linking art engagement to social cognition remains mixed across paradigms, methods, and timescales. We develop the thesis that art functions as a scaffold for social cognition, rather than a direct intervention on social-cognitive abilities. From this perspective, art structures the conditions under which social cognition unfolds by shaping whether individuals engage with socially meaningful content, how deeply they become involved, and whether they return to similar experiences over time. The scaffold mod

Differential associations between components of anxiety sensitivity and smoking-related characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety sensitivity (AS)-the tendency to fear anxiety-related experiences-is a risk factor for anxiety disorders and may contribute to smoking motivation and maintenance. Few studies have examined the relations between conceptually distinct components of AS and smoking behavior. The purpose of the current study was to examine the associations between AS components-physical concerns, mental concerns, and social concerns-and an array of smoking-related characteristics. METHODS: In a cross-sectional design, we administered the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) and self-report measure

Increased c-Fos expression in lateral habenula during social transmission of negative valence in prairie voles.

BACKGROUND: Social learning is the process of acquiring social skills, new information, or associating negative or positive valence to a context through the observation of others and through direct social interaction with others. Neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder show deficits in social salience and reciprocal affective responses. Social learning implicates the basolateral amygdala (BLA), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and anterior insula (AI). The lateral habenula (LHb), a brain area renowned for its role in negative reinforcement learning, has not been yet exten

Fitting in and feeling fine: conformity and coping motives as mediators of the relationship between social anxiety and problematic drinking.

The present research was conducted to clarify the relationships among social anxiety, alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and negative-reinforcement drinking motives among college students. Heavy drinking students (N = 316, 53.80% female) completed self-report measures of social anxiety, alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and drinking motives. Findings indicated that students higher in social anxiety consumed less alcohol but experienced more negative consequences. Moreover, the relationship between social anxiety and negative consequences was mediated by coping and conf

The effectiveness of and preschoolers' preferences for variations of multiple-schedule arrangements.

Multiple schedules of reinforcement have been used to teach children to recruit attention only when it is available, thereby minimizing disruptive requesting during instructional activities. This procedure involves alternating periods of continuous reinforcement (CRF) with periods of extinction and correlating each period with a distinct and continuous discriminative stimulus. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of and children's preferences for multiple schedules in which (a) two different stimuli, one correlated with reinforcement (S+) and another correlated with extinction (S-), w

Signaling High Sensitivity to Influence Others: Initial Evidence for the Roles of Reinforcement Sensitivity, Sensory Processing Sensitivity, and the Dark Triad.

Signaling high sensitivity to others may help individuals with heightened sensitivity to stimuli to craft their social relations to a preferred activation level ("assertive signaling of specific needs" hypothesis). Signaling sensitivity could be also a deceptive strategy helping to extract resources or obtain the desired treatment ("deceptive signaling" hypothesis). The study presents the construction of the measure of signaling high sensitivity to influence others and an initial test of both hypotheses. Two hundred and one participants ranging in age from 18 to 67 (M = 25.6; SD = 7.03) report

Wins, winning and winners: the commercial advertising of lottery gambling.

This study analyzed a sample of 920 lottery ads that were placed or played in Atlantic Canada from January 2005 to December 2006. A content analysis, involving quantitative and qualitative techniques, was conducted to examine the design features, exposure profiles and focal messages of these ads and to explore the connections between lottery advertising and consumer culture. We found that there was an "ethos of winning" in these commercials that provided the embedded words, signs, myths, and symbols surrounding lottery gambling and conveyed a powerful imagery of plentitude and certitude in a w

Functional analysis and treatment of verbal perseverations displayed by an adult with autism.

The function of perseverative speech for an adult man who had been diagnosed with autism and mental retardation was examined. Results showed that verbal perseverations were maintained by social attention. An intervention consisting of differential reinforcement of appropriate verbal responses and extinction of perseverative verbal responding was effective in decreasing verbal perseverations.

Reversal learning in C58 mice: Modeling higher order repetitive behavior.

Restricted, repetitive behaviors are diagnostic for autism and prevalent in other neurodevelopmental disorders. These behaviors cluster as repetitive sensory-motor behaviors and behaviors reflecting resistance to change. The C58 mouse strain is a promising model for these behaviors as it emits high rates of aberrant repetitive sensory-motor behaviors. The purpose of the present study was to extend characterization of the C58 model to resistance to change. This was done by comparing C58 to C57BL/6 mice on a reversal learning task under either a 100% or 80%/20% probabilistic reinforcement schedu

Extending Social Learning Theory to Explain Victimization Among Gang and Ex-Gang Offenders.

This study is among the first to extend and test social learning theory's ability to understand property and violent victimization. It specifically tests whether aspects of definitions, differential reinforcement, and differential association/modeling can explain the three types of victimization of gang members: actual experience, perception of likelihood, and fear. The sample consists of over 300 male and female gang members incarcerated in jails throughout Florida. The results show that all three types of victimization can be explained by the three aspects of social learning theory.

Differentiating brain function of punishment versus reward processing in conduct disorder with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Conduct disorder (CD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are reported to co-occur in about 30-50% of affected individuals. Research suggests that poor reinforcement-based decision-making may contribute to impaired social functioning in both youths with CD and ADHD. Considering its frequent co-occurrence this raises the question whether decision-making deficits in both disorders have a disorder-specific and/or shared neurobiological basis. METHODS: 138 participants with CD, ADHD, or CD + ADHD, and typically developing controls (TDCs) aged 9-18 years (48% girls) wer

Acquisition and generalization of social skills by high school students with mild mental retardation.

Initial acquisition of social skills by high school students with mild mental retardation was measured during the social skills training game Stacking the Deck. Generalization probes were conducted outside of the training setting (immediately preceding and following training, and 6 weeks posttraining). Due to the high degree of dissimilarity between stimuli in and outside of the training setting, we hypothesized that generalization of skills to nontraining environments would be minimal. Two replications of an initial single-case study were conducted. Students demonstrated acquisition of social

Increasing positive social interactions by handicapped individuals during a recreational activity using a multicomponent treatment package.

A multicomponent treatment package increased the rate of positive statements among handicapped youth during a social/leisure activity at a work training setting. The package of role playing, graphic feedback, contingent reinforcement, and self-monitoring was directly replicated across three experiments in producing normative rates of positive verbal statements. There was no evidence of generalization to other stimulus activities. There was limited response generalization to a class of negative verbal statements. The study further examined the critical components of the maintenance package thro

Treating stereotypy in adolescents diagnosed with autism by refining the tactic of "using stereotypy as reinforcement".

Use of automatically reinforced stereotypy as reinforcement has been shown to be successful for increasing socially desirable behaviors in persons with intellectual disabilities (Charlop, Kurtz, & Casey, 1990; Hanley, Iwata, Thompson, & Lindberg, 2000; Hung, 1978). A component analysis of this treatment was conducted with 3 adolescents who had been diagnosed with autism, and then extended by (a) progressively increasing the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the response requirement to earn access to stereotypy, (b) arranging objective measures of client preference for contingent access t

Getting off the fence: procedures to engage treatment-resistant drinkers.

Historically there have been few options for individuals seeking help for treatment-resistant loved ones with substance abuse problems. This article describes a program with empirical backing called Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT). This cognitive-behavioral treatment teaches the concerned significant other how to use behavioral principles to reduce the loved one's drinking and to encourage the drinker to seek treatment. Additionally it assists the concerned significant other in alleviating other types of stress and in introducing meaningful reinforcers into his or her own l

The role of oxytocin receptors in social conditioned place preference.

Investigating the neural mechanisms underlying social reward is important not only to further current understanding of adaptive social behaviors, but also for informing potential therapeutic strategies for disorders associated with impaired social functioning. A growing body of literature indicates that the neuropeptide oxytocin (OXT) plays a modulatory role in dynamic social behaviors and may influence reward processing to initiate and maintain them. The present study aimed to assess the reinforcing effects of social interaction in rats using a social conditioned place preference paradigm, in

Social skills training for chronic mental patients.

Social skills training has proved to be effective in increasing the social competence of chronic mental patients. The authors describe three models of social skills training, all of which involve role playing by the patient and modeling, prompting, feedback, and reinforcement by the therapist. Many patients can benefit from the basic training model. For patients functioning at a higher level, the problem-solving model provides general strategies for dealing with a variety of social situations. The attention-focusing model, designed for highly distractible and withdrawn patients, teaches skills

Living with Limits: A Phenomenological Study on the Experience of Intradialytic Weight Control in Hemodialysis.

This phenomenological study explored the daily life experiences of 18 hemodialysis patients managing fluid restrictions, recruited from a university hospital in Turkey. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method supported by MAXQDA software. Two themes emerged: Living Amidst Constraints (environmental, psychological, physical, and professional challenges) and Finding Strength (behavioral adaptations, resilience, social support, and educational and technological tools). These findings suggest that knowledge alone is insufficient t
