Kinesiophobia and Pain Catastrophizing Leads to Decreased Return to Sport Following Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation but Does Not Affect Return to Work.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of fear of reinjury on return to sport (RTS), return to work (RTW), and clinical outcomes following autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI). DESIGN: A retrospective review of patients who underwent ACI with a minimum of 2 years in clinical follow-up was conducted. Patient-reported outcomes collected included the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS). Kinesiophobia and pain catastrophizing was assessed using the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia-11 (TSK-11) and Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), respectively. Patients we

Return to sport and beyond following intramuscular tendon hamstring injury: A case report of an English Premier League football player.

BACKGROUND: Hamstring strain injuries are the most common type of injury in elite football and are associated with a high risk of reinjury, particularly those involving the intramuscular tendon (IMT). Limited information is available regarding the rehabilitation and return to sport (RTS) processes following such injuries. This case study describes the clinical presentation of an elite football player following IMT hamstring injury, their on- and off-pitch rehabilitation alongside performance monitoring throughout RTS and beyond. CASE SCENARIO: An elite football player suffered a grade 2c hams

Recurrent Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tears in the National Football League: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common in American football players. The risk of subsequent ACL reinjury to either the ipsilateral or the contralateral knee in National Football League (NFL) draftees with a history of successful ACL reconstruction before entering the NFL remains unknown. HYPOTHESIS: NFL athletes with a history of successful ACL reconstruction before being drafted will likely demonstrate increased risk of subsequent ACL injury when compared with a control cohort consisting of players of similar positions and draft class. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; L

Hospital-based violence intervention programs targeting adult populations: an Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma evidence-based review.

BACKGROUND: Violent injury and reinjury take a devastating toll on distressed communities. Many trauma centers have created hospital-based violent injury prevention programs (HVIP) to address psychosocial, educational, and mental health needs of injured patients that may contribute to reinjury. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the overall effectiveness of HVIPs for violent injury prevention. We performed an evidence-based review to answer the following population, intervention, comparator, outcomes (PICO) question: Are HVIPs attending to adult patients (age 18+) treated for intentional injury more eff

Return-to-Play Criteria Following a Hamstring Injury in Professional Soccer: Time for a Tailor-Made Approach.

PURPOSE: A hamstring injury rehabilitation and return-to-play (RTP) individualized approach based on the anatomical structure involved, the location of the injury, and the mechanism of injury is still missing in most studies. RTP criteria should be chosen following the same principles and the complexity of the injury and should receive more attention from the scientific community given that reinjury risk is one of the main challenges associated with hamstring rehabilitation. The available literature is mainly based on articles in which hamstring injuries are treated as a whole without making d

Does support received for subsequent injuries differ between Māori and non-Māori? Findings from a cohort study of injured New Zealanders.

AIMS: To examine if differences exist between injured Māori and non-Māori in accessing and receiving support from the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) for treatment and rehabilitation of subsequent injuries. METHODS: This cohort study utilised participants' self-reported data from the Prospective Outcomes of Injury Study, and ACC claims data. RESULTS: Approximately one-third of Māori (32%) and non-Māori (35%) who self-reported a subsequent injury had no associated ACC claim. Statistically significant differences in this outcome (i.e., self-reported subsequent injury but no ACC claim)

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction rehabilitation: Decades of change.

Current anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) rehabilitation practice guidelines lack updates in key areas: open kinetic chain (OKC) quadriceps strengthening, neurocognitive training and psychological interventions. Recent research shows that OKC exercises, when combined with closed kinetic chain exercises, improve strength without compromising graft integrity, though careful monitoring for knee pain and effusion is essential. Neurocognitive training, targeting reaction times, visual attention and dual-tasking, is promising for reducing reinjury risk but remains underutilized. Simil

Neural-Targeted Rehabilitation Strategies to Address Neuroplasticity After Joint Injury.

In patients with musculoskeletal injury, changes have been observed within the central nervous system that contribute to altered movement planning. This maladaptive neuroplasticity potentially explains the clinical disconnect where residual neuromuscular dysfunction and high rates of reinjury are often observed even after individuals clear return-to-activity functional testing. An improved understanding of these neural changes could therefore serve as a guide for facilitating a more complete recovery and minimizing risk of reinjury. Therefore, we propose a paradigm of neural-targeted rehabilit

Tolerance of repeated toxic injuries of murine livers is associated with steatosis and inflammation.

The human liver has a remarkable capacity to regenerate and thus compensate over decades for fibrosis caused by toxic chemicals, drugs, alcohol, or malnutrition. To date, no protective mechanisms have been identified that help the liver tolerate these repeated injuries. In this study, we revealed dysregulation of lipid metabolism and mild inflammation as protective mechanisms by studying longitudinal multi-omic measurements of liver fibrosis induced by repeated CCl4 injections in mice (n = 45). Based on comprehensive proteomics, transcriptomics, blood- and tissue-level profiling, we uncovered

Mapping the Existing Return-to-Sport Criteria After Pectoralis Major Tendon Injury in Different Sports: A Scoping Review for Getting Back to the Game.

CONTEXT: It is estimated that only 50% of athletes who sustain pectoralis major tendon injuries return to sport (RTS) despite successful treatment. This limited RTS rate may be due to absence of standardized RTS criteria for such patients. Evidence suggests a significant heterogeneity in RTS guidance across various studies, leading to inconsistency in clinical advice. OBJECTIVE: To examine the existing RTS criteria used in pectoralis major tendon injury in different sporting populations. DATA SOURCES: A comprehensive literature search with defined keywords was conducted in electronic databas

Swine model of coronary restenosis: effect of a second injury.

Looking for a coronary artery restenosis model closer to human pathology, a protocol of balloon injury/reinjury (plaque of dilatation) in swine coronary artery was designed. Pig coronary arteries (n = 24) were dilated for this study: 12, group 1, once (sacrifice at 10.0 +/- 2.2 weeks); 6, group 2, twice at 2-wk intervals (sacrifice at 5.2 +/- 0.2 wk); 6, group 3, twice at 4-wk intervals (sacrifice at 9.3 +/- 1.9 wk). A single overdilatation resulted in an eccentric neointimal hyperplasia representing half of the wall area (group 1, 45.6 +/- 5.1%). In animals (groups 2 and 3) subjected to redil
