Data entry workers perceptions and satisfaction response to the "stop and stretch" software program.

Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD) is a collection of chronic musculoskeletal disorders caused by frequent, sustained, and repetitive movements, most notably by computer usage at the workplace. A computer based break reminder program (Stop and Stretch) has been developed and installed to prevent CTDs caused by prolonged computer usage at the workplace. We investigated users' opinions to the Stop and Stretch program at their work place. 19 computer users were recruited as the subjects of the study. We conducted a survey after all the subjects used the Stop and Stretch program for one month. Among

A cost-effectiveness analysis of interventions to increase repeat testing in patients treated for gonorrhea or chlamydia at public sexually transmitted disease clinics.

BACKGROUND: Persons who have been infected with chlamydia or gonorrhea (CT/GC) are at elevated risk for reinfection. The cost-effectiveness of interventions designed to encourage public sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic patients to return for rescreening has not been well-evaluated. GOAL: The goal of this study was to conduct a program- and societal-perspective cost-effectiveness analysis of five interventions designed to encourage public STD clinic patients infected with CT/GC to return for rescreening 3 months after initial treatment. STUDY: Researchers at two STD clinics collected

Tinnitus reclassified; new oil in an old lamp.

This article represents a compilation of study, research, and patient care during a 30-year period. Its development was based on two tenets: (1) keep it simple and (2) be inclusive. The purpose of the classification system was to provide professionals with a vehicle for describing tinnitus and its location, probable cause, loudness, degree of annoyance, and pitch. The system uses two mnemonics to follow the word tinnitus: (1) A, B, or C for tinnitus Aurium, Binaural, or Cerebri; and C-CLAP for Cause, Composition, Loudness, Annoyance, and Pitch. Four descriptions are presented on how this class

Increasing chlamydia test of re-infection rates using SMS reminders and incentives.

BACKGROUND: Clients diagnosed and treated for Chlamydia trachomatis are a recognised high-risk group for subsequent infection. An estimated 8% of clients treated for chlamydia at Cairns Sexual Health Service return for re-testing within the recommended 3-4-month period. There is no recall or reminder system in place. This study assesses the effectiveness of using short messaging service (SMS) reminders with and without incentive payments to increase re-testing rates. METHODS: Eligible consenting clients were randomly allocated to one of three groups. Group 1 (controls) received the standard a

Short-Term Outcomes of Two Interventions for Patients With Active Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy in an Urban, Safety-Net Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Proliferative diabetic retinopathy carries significant visual morbidity and loss to follow-up can lead to poorer visual outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the short-term impact of two systems-focused clinical initiatives directed toward reducing loss-to-follow-up and increasing pan-retinal photocoagulation (PRP) rates in patients with active proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) in an urban, safety-net, teaching-hospital setting. The introduction of an additional weekly PRP clinic was followed by the creation of an active PDR patient registry with an appointment reminder syst

Adapting SMS-Based Pharmacovigilance Strategies From Tanzania to the Philippine ART Program.

This letter comments on the study by Masika et al, which demonstrated the feasibility of SMS reminders to improve adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting among adults on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Tanzania. Their findings show how mobile messaging can enhance patient awareness and strengthen pharmacovigilance in resource-limited settings. This commentary considers the relevance of this approach for the Philippines, where ADR underreporting persists due to limited digital tools, uneven facility resources, and low patient engagement. With mobile phone penetration exceeding 130%, an SMS-based

The impact of text message reminders on adherence to antimalarial treatment in northern Ghana: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Low rates of adherence to artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) regimens increase the risk of treatment failure and may lead to drug resistance, threatening the sustainability of current anti-malarial efforts. We assessed the impact of text message reminders on adherence to ACT regimens. METHODS: Health workers at hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and other stationary ACT distributors in Tamale, Ghana provided flyers advertising free mobile health information to individuals receiving malaria treatment. The messaging system automatically randomized self-enrolled individuals to

Clinical communication to improve uptake of pentavalent vaccine in children under 5 years in Cameroon: a best practice implementation project.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccines are an evidence-based public health strategy that stimulates immune responses and prevents life-threatening childhood diseases, thereby reducing morbidity and mortality. Although immunization coverage in Africa has improved, it has not reached targets. Effective communication and reminder systems are vital for increasing vaccine uptake. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this project was to improve uptake of the pentavalent vaccine among children under 5 years in Bali Health District, Cameroon, by implementing evidence-based practices. METHODS: This best practice project used the

Digital adherence technology to improve medication adherence in tuberculosis patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis randomized control trials.

Medication adherence is critical for successful tuberculosis (TB) treatment, yet non-adherence remains a major barrier to TB control globally. Digital adherence technologies (DAT) have emerged as promising tools to support adherence, but their effectiveness remains variably reported across settings and intervention types. To evaluate the effectiveness of DAT compared to directly observed therapy (DOT) in improving TB medication adherence through a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, E

Using an Automated Evaluation System to Improve Medical Student Evaluation Response Rate and Reduce Administrative Burden.

BACKGROUND: Email reminders facilitate timely task completion but can create substantial administrative burdens for clerkship staff. In our emergency medicine (EM) clerkship, third-year medical students initiate digital evaluation requests after each clinical shift, requiring frequent manual reminders to maintain completion rates. The time-intensive nature of this process highlights the need for a more efficient and scalable approach. METHODS: This multi-site, pre-post study evaluated clinical performance evaluation completion rates and time to completion during the required EM clerkship over

Completion of multiple-dose travel vaccine series and the availability of pharmacist immunizers: A retrospective analysis of administrative data in Alberta, Canada.

Pharmacists in a number of countries are being trained in the administration of injections with the aim of improving access and adherence to vaccinations. However, little is known about population-level adherence to multiple-dose travel vaccines, and whether the availability of pharmacist immunizers is associated with adherence. Health administrative data from Alberta, Canada, from April 2008 to May 2017 identified adults dispensed at least one vaccine for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, or rabies. Individuals were coded as completers or non-completers of the vaccine series ba

Evaluation of Text Message Reminders to Encourage Retesting for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Among Female Patients at the Municipal Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic in Seattle, Washington.

BACKGROUND: United States guidelines recommend retesting for chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhea (GC) approximately 3 months after treatment, but adherence to these guidelines is poor. METHODS: In May 2016, the municipal sexually transmitted disease (STD) Clinic in Seattle, WA, integrated opt-in short message system (SMS) (text message) retesting reminders for female patients into our clinic's routine electronic intake. Women were asked if they wanted to receive an SMS reminder for retesting for GC/CT in 3 months. We used Fisher exact tests to compare the proportion who returned to the clinic for re

Evaluation of computer-generated reminders to improve CD4 laboratory monitoring in sub-Saharan Africa: a prospective comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: Little evidence exists on effective interventions to integrate HIV-care guidelines into practices within developing countries. This study tested the hypothesis that clinical summaries with computer-generated reminders could improve clinicians' compliance with CD4 testing guidelines in the resource-limited setting of sub-Saharan Africa. DESIGN: A prospective comparative study of two randomly selected outpatient adult HIV clinics in western Kenya. Printed summaries with reminders for overdue CD4 tests were made available to clinicians in the intervention clinic but not in the control

Automated, computer generated reminders and increased detection of gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis in men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend frequent screening of men who have sex with men (MSM) for sexually transmissible infections (STIs) but few interventions have demonstrated increased testing and detection of bacterial STIs among MSM in controlled studies. METHODS: We used automated text message and email reminders generated by computer assisted self-interview (CASI) to remind MSM to retest for syphilis. We compared clinic visits, STI testing and detection rates over 12 month between men receiving reminders (reminder group) and men not offered the reminders (concurrent control group). RESULTS:

Successful colorectal cancer screening starts with primary care.

Colorectal cancer screening is effective. Screening rates remain low, but that will change. All guidelines now recommend colorectal cancer screening, the value of screening is being promoted in the popular media, and insurers are beginning to pay for screening tests. For screening programs to be successful, good intentions must be backed by reminder systems, readily available patient information, and other changes in office practice. Currently recommended screening options accommodate a broad range of patient preferences and save lives, but none is ideal. Newer tests, such as virtual colonosco

Protocol of a Randomized Trial Investigating the Value of a Reminder App to Increase Physical Activity During Radiotherapy or Radio-Chemotherapy for Locally Advanced Lung Cancer.

Background: Radiation therapy with or without systemic treatment for lung cancer can cause adverse reactions, e.g., fatigue. Affected patients may experience a decrease in physical activity and, as a consequence, be unable to receive the complete assigned treatment. Physical exercise may be helpful. A benefit of exercise regarding completion of systemic treatment and quality of life was previously suggested. Irradiated patients may benefit as well. A smartphone-based app reminding patients to make a minimum number of steps might positively influence physical activity. The prototype of an app c

A reminder reduces urinary catheterization in hospitalized patients.

BACKGROUND: Indwelling urinary catheters are placed in up to 25% of hospitalized patients and are a leading cause of hospital-acquired infection. Duration of catheterization is the dominant risk factor for hospital-acquired urinary tract infection. Physicians are often unaware that their patients have a urinary catheter, and these "forgotten" catheters are frequently unnecessary. METHODS: A controlled trial, using a pretest-posttest design, was conducted on four hospital wards at an academic medical center. A simple written reminder was designed to aid the hospitalized patient's team in remem

Evaluation of behavioral economic strategies to raise influenza vaccination rates across a health system: Results from a randomized clinical trial.

Influenza vaccination rates are low. Working with a large US health system, we evaluated three health system-wide interventions using the electronic health record's patient portal to improve influenza vaccination rates. We performed a two-arm RCT with a nested factorial design within the treatment arm, randomizing patients to usual-care control (no portal interventions) or to one or more portal interventions. We included all patients within this health system during the 2020-2021 influenza vaccination season, which overlapped with the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the patient portal, we simultane
