Effects of adenosine infusion on renal function, plasma ANP and ADH concentrations and central hemodynamics in anesthetized pigs.

1. The effect of high-dose adenosine administration on atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and antidiuretic hormone (ADH) release is not completely understood, and data concerning the effect of adenosine on renal and systemic hemodynamics in the pig are lacking. Measurements of central hemodynamics, renal blood flow and urine production were made in anesthetized pigs during infusion of adenosine. The relationship between these parameters and the plasma concentrations of ANP, ADH and renal renin production was examined. 2. Adenosine infusion at the rate of 140 mg/kg per minute resulted in a signif

A comparison of the cardiovascular effects of sodium nitroprusside and trimethaphan.

In dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital-chloralose, cardiac output and blood flows of four regional vascular beds (superior mesenteric, left renal, left circumflex coronary and left femoral) were continuously monitered with electromagnetic flowmeters. Arterial blood pressure and heart rate were also measured. Hypotension was induced with intravenous infusions of sodium nitroprusside and trimethaphan for 5-16 min to produce comparable reductions of mean arterial pressure (32 mm Hg or 26 per cent with nitroprusside and 37 mm Hg or 31 per cent with trimethaphan). Cardiac output also decreased, bu

[Effect of paeonol on blood pressure and blood flow in artery of spontaneously hypertensive rats and its mechanisms related on vasomotion].

Previous studies have shown that paeonol can antagonize acute myocardial ischemia and infarction in rat. This study further researched the effects of paeonol on blood pressure and blood flow in the artery of spontaneously hypertensive rats and its mechanisms related on vasomotion. Firstly, thirty spontaneously hypertensive rats were randomly divided into spontaneously hypertensive control group and paeonol-treating groups of high dose and low dose, and also, the other ten Wistar rats as healthy control group. Before and after the intraduodenal administration of the drug, arterial blood pressur

Ductal shunting and effective systemic blood flow following single dose surfactant treatment in the premature baboon with hyaline membrane disease.

We studied the hemodynamic effects of using natural surfactant in premature baboons with hyaline membrane disease (HMD). Study animals (n = 5) received a single dose of surfactant immediately after delivery and control animals (n = 8) did not. Using microspheres at 3, 8, and 23 h we found no significant differences in left ventricular output, effective systemic flow, systemic-to-pulmonary patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) shunting, or in cerebral or renal organ blood flow. However, both groups had large PDA shunts (fraction of LVO to lungs greater than 0.40-0.55 at 3 and 8 h) resulting in low sys

Effect of intravascular volume expansion on renal function during prolonged CO2 pneumoperitoneum.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether intravascular volume expansion would improve renal blood flow and function during prolonged CO2 pneumoperitoneum. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Although laparoscopic living donor nephrectomies have a considerably reduced risk of complications for the donors, significant concerns exist regarding procurement of a kidney in the altered physiologic environment of CO2 pneumoperitoneum. Recent studies have documented adverse effects of CO2 pneumoperitoneum on renal hemodynamics. METHODS: Renal and systemic hemodynamics and renal histology were studied in a porcine CO2 pne

Continuous venovenous renal replacement therapy using a pulsatile blood pump.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a pulsatile pump for continuous renal replacement therapy in a pediatric-size animal model. A vacuum-driven, tubular, blood-pumping device was used in 13 pigs weighing 10.4+/-1.5 kg, connected to a neonatal hemofiltration circuit with an FH22 filter and a flow sensor. Three different flow rates [30 ml/min (8 cases), 15 ml/min (3 cases), and 5 ml/min (2 cases] were used over 2-h periods. Aspiration pressure, frequency of pulsation, blood flow rate, ultrafiltrate volume, pre- and post-filter pressures, heart rate, arterial blood pressur

Renal effects of conivaptan, furosemide, and the combination in patients with chronic heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Loop diuretics, though often effective for treating congestion, have significant limitations. Discovering ways to limit exposure to loop diuretics while achieving effective decongestion is an important goal of current clinical research in heart failure (HF). Vasopressin antagonists are effective in removing large amounts of water, but not salt, in HF. Few data exist about the detailed renal and hormonal effects of these agents compared with or in combination with loop diuretics. This study investigated the renal and neurohormonal effects of loop diuretics, the mixed vasopressin ant

The use of centrally acting antihypertensive drugs in patients with renal disease.

Clonidine was given to patients with essential hypertension, renovascular hypertension, and hypertension with parenchymal renal disease. The drug was effective in all groups but was more effective in patients with high plasma renin concentration. Renal function did not deteriorate when the drug was used, and there was an increase in renal blood flow and a small increase in glomerular filtration rate in those with renovascular or essential hypertension. These changes may have been due to falls in plasma renin. Clonidine can be used in patients with renal disease and does not cause worsening of

[Renal disorders in hepatic insufficiency - pathogenesis and therapy (author's transl)].

Renal failure in patients with acute or chronic hepatic insufficiency may be caused by prerenal factors (diuretics, hemorrhage), acute renal failure (shock, toxic tubular necrosis) or concurrent primary renal disease. Prerenal (functional terminal or circulatory) insufficiency to the kidneys seems to occur spontaneously; it is characterized by progressive reduction of glomerular filtration rate and renal plasma flow due to vasoconstriction and increase of intrarenal arterial resistance; the pathogenetic mechanisms of these changes are unknown. Reduction of effective plasma volume is especially

Renal blood flow using arterial spin labelling MRI and calculated filtration fraction in healthy adult kidney donors Pre-nephrectomy and post-nephrectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Renal plasma flow (RPF) (derived from renal blood flow, RBF) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) allow the determination of the filtration fraction (FF), which may have a role as a non-invasive renal biomarker. This is a hypothesis-generating pilot study assessing the effect of nephrectomy on renal function in healthy kidney donors. METHODS: Eight living kidney donors underwent arterial spin labelling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and GFR measurement prior to and 1 year after nephrectomy. [Behavior of blood pressure, renal plasma flow and renal vein renin activity in renovascular hypertensive patients before and after PTA].

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is more and more accepted for interventional management of renal artery stenosis in hypertensive patients. This study was carried out to assess the behaviour of arterial blood-pressure, renal plasma flow and renal venous renin activity in renovascular hypertension following catheter dilatation. Using the data the possibility is calculated to predict the effect of PTA on blood pressure preinterventionally. The results demonstrate that a successful employment of PTA depends on a normal contralateral renal plasma flow and a normalization of plasma flow

Cardiovascular responses to V1-vasopressinergic antagonism in conscious versus anesthetized rats.

Experiments were performed to compare the possible effect of endogenous arginine vasopressin on renal hemodynamics between anesthetized, surgically stressed rats and conscious rats. Animals were instrumented with arterial and venous catheters as well as with a pulsed Doppler flow probe on the left renal artery. The rats were studied under the following conditions: (1) conscious and unrestrained; (2) anesthetized only; (3) anesthetized with minor surgical stress; and (4) anesthetized with major surgical stress. Two anesthetic agents were also compared, a mixture of ketamine (110 mg/kg i.m.) and

Decreases in portal flow trigger a hepatorenal reflex to inhibit renal sodium and water excretion in rats: role of adenosine.

The regulation of renal sodium and water excretion through a hepatorenal reflex activated by the changes in hemodynamics of the portal circulation has been suggested. We hypothesize that the changes in intrahepatic blood flow and flow-related intrahepatic adenosine are involved in the control of renal water and sodium excretion by triggering a hepatorenal reflex. Anesthetized rats were instrumented to monitor the systemic, hepatic, and renal circulation. A vascular shunt connecting the portal vein and central vena cava was established to allow for control of the portal venous blood flow (PVBF)

Hemodynamic studies in experimental toxemia of the dog.

The following experiments demonstrate that the severity of toxemia is proportional to the degree of reduction in blood flow to the pregnant uterus. Blood pressure and blood flow variations were studied in 21 nonpregnant and pregnant dogs following the placement of a progressive stricture on the abdominal aorta below the renal arteries. The immediate effect of the stricture was a mild hypertension in half of the pregnant dogs; in addition, in all the dogs, the blood flow progressively dropped in the arteries below the stricture (femoral and uterine) while it remained constant in the arteries ab

Effects of beta-receptor blockade on regional blood flows during acute left ventricular failure in dogs.

This study describes the effects of beta-receptor blockade on systemic hemodynamics and regional blood flows during acute ischemic heart failure in dogs. Depression of left ventricular (LV) function was induced by embolization of the left main coronary artery and was evidenced by a significant increase in LV end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) and decrease in LV dP/dtmax and in cardiac output. Measurements of femoral, renal, mesenteric, and carotid blood flows showed a redistribution of cardiac output during failure. Femoral blood flow decreased to a greater extent than did cardiac output, carotid

Efficacy and Safety of Ramipril in Hypertensive Single-Kidney Patients.

The effects of medium-term antihypertensive treatment with the ACE inhibitor ramipril were studied on 10 hypertensive single-kidney patients in a double-blind study versus placebo. Patients with renovascular hypertension were excluded. Compared to placebo, ramipril induces a significant reduction of arterial blood pressure (p < 0.02 for systolic, p < 0.01 for diastolic, and p < 0.05 for mean blood pressure), renal vascular resistance (p < 0.005), and microalbuminuria (p < 0.005), but a significant rise of effective renal plasma flow (p < 0.01) and no significant variation of the glomerular fil

Pathophysiology of sea nettle (Chrysaora quinquecirrha), envenomation in a rat model and the effects of hyperbaric oxygen and verapamil treatment.

The effect of lethal sea nettle envenomation on the morphology and blood flow in various rat organs was characterized and the influence of two antidotes (hyperbaric oxygen and verapamil) was compared. Either antidote slightly prolonged survival, but the protective effects were not statistically significant. The venom caused no histologic alterations in brain, heart, or lungs but induced hepatic and renal necrosis. Hepatocytes in mid-zonal regions and renal tubular epithelium were the cell types predominantly affected. Hyperbaric oxygen and verapamil did not decrease the hepatic injury. The ven

Better Renal Resistive Index Profile in Subjects with Beta Thalassemia Minor.

OBJECTIVE: Beta thalassaemia minor is a common genetic disorder without any characteristic symptoms except mild anemia. It is found to be associated with some cardiovascular risk factors such as insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus. The renal resistive index (RRI) is a measure of renal arterial resistance to blood flow. The aim of this study was to evaluate the RRI in subjects with beta thalassemia minor (BTM). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 253 subjects were included in this cross-sectional study. The study group consisted of 148 subjects with BTM and the control group consisted of 105
