BACKGROUND: The resection of a subaortic membrane remains far from a curative operation. We sought to examine factors associated with reoperation and the degree of aortic valve regurgitation as a potential long-term source for reoperation.
METHODS: All patients who underwent resection of an isolated subaortic membrane between 1995 and 2018 were included. Patients who underwent other procedures were excluded. Paired categorical data were compared using McNemar's test. Univariate time-to-event analyses were performed using Kaplan-Meier methods with log-rank tests for categorical variables and u

BACKGROUND: Supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS) is the rarest type of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. We reviewed our experience with this anomaly and analyzed risk factors for death or reoperation.
METHODS: Between 1984 and 2009, 49 patients had surgery for SVAS. A single-patch technique was used in 3, two-sinus enlargement in 39, and three-sinus enlargement in 7. Variables evaluated included age at surgery (<2 versus >2 years old), presence of pulmonary artery stenosis, type of SVAS (focal versus diffuse), presence of valvular aortic stenosis, and era of surgery.

The characteristics of spinal restenosis in achondroplasia and its treatment are evaluated in this study. Radiologic and surgical findings were correlated to establish the causes of achondroplastic spinal restenosis and the benefits of its therapy. Eight patients (five men, three women) with spinal restenotic complications of achondroplasia were studied. The most common neurological sign of recurrent stenosis was impaired motor function. The mean interval between the most recent surgeries was 8.2 years (9.5 years for surgeries at the same levels). The most common causes of recurrent stenosis w

A case of a complicated postoperative course after laparoscopic cholecystectomy in which, ultimately, gallbladder duplication was suspected and confirmed at laparotomy is described. The diagnostic tools, differential diagnosis, and therapy are discussed. After open cholecystectomy patients' complaints dissolved. Awareness of the possibility of a double gallbladder in case of persisting symptoms after laparoscopic cholecystectomy can lead to diagnosis of this condition at an earlier stage.

Between January in 1988 and September in 1990, 65 patients underwent reoperation for acquired heart disease. Previous operations were closed mitral commissurotomy in 19, open mitral commissurotomy in 19, mitral valve replacement in 22, aortic valve replacement in one, and mitral repair in 4. After median sternotomy performed by hand-operated chisel and hammer, minimized dissection of the adhesive lesion was achieved. During the sternotomy, two patients required additional right thoracotomy because of marked median sternal adhesion and major cardiovascular injury occurred in three patients. Car

Between 1961 and 1978, 6,602 valves were replaced in 5,660 patients. Reoperation for periprosthetic leakage was performed in 105 patients (1.6% of the valves); early mortality was 5.7%. At reoperation, 52% of patients were in New York Heart Association Classes III and IV, whereas 72% had been in Classes III and IV prior to the primary valve replacement. Seventy-five patients had aortic periprosthetic leaks, which were distributed equally around the annulus. Among these patients, 41 (55%) had aortic valve rereplacement and 34 (45%) had suture repair. At 5 years, the survival was 94% and the eve

This retrospective study includes 53 patients who underwent reoperation after failure of lumbar disc surgery to relieve pain. All patients had leg pain before reoperation, which was successful in 28% of cases. Most clinical features, such as persistence or mode of recurrence of pain, radicular quality of pain, positive straight-leg raising, and myelographic root sleeve defects, were not helpful in predicting successful and unsuccessful reoperations. However, a significantly larger percentage of women than men had successful reoperations. Patients who had past or pending compensation claims, wh

Recurrent thoracic outlet syndrome that requires reoperation accounts for 1% of first rib resections. Symptoms in a series of 30 patients were mainly neurological and consisted of pain and paresthesia involving the neck, shoulder, arm, and hand and were severe and unrelenting. Recurrence of symptoms ensued from one month to seven years following initial rib resection, with the majority appearing within the first three months. Nerve conduction velocities were diminished to an average of 51 m per second, well below the normal of 72 m per second. Reoperation was required after a period of extensi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Adverse events after cranioplasty remain a significant burden in postsurgical care, often necessitating reoperations. Identifying predictors of reoperation could optimize care. We investigated reoperation after cranioplasty and factors that correlate.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 318 cranioplasty patients at our single institution was conducted. Clinical demographics, preoperative and perioperative parameters, and postoperative outcomes of patients were collected from electronic health records. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression were conducted

Objective To evaluate post-operative complications of circumcision requiring surgical reintervention. Methods Retrospective analysis of medical records of patients submitted to circumcision from May 1st, 2015 to May 31st, 2016. Results A total of 2,441 circumcisions were performed; in that, 1,940 using Plastibell and 501 by the classic technique. Complications requiring surgical reintervention were found in 3.27% of patients. When separated by surgical technique, 3.4% of circumcisions using Plastibell device required reoperation, as compared to 3% of conventional technique (p=0.79). Preputial

BACKGROUND: The reoperation for isolated tricuspid regurgitation in rheumatic population is rare and still unclear and controversial because of the rarity of publications. The aim of this study was to analyze short and long-term results and outcome of tricuspid valve surgery after left-sided valve surgery in rheumatic patients.
METHODS: Twenty six consecutive rheumatic patients who underwent isolated tricuspid valve surgery after left-sided valve surgery between January 2000 and January2017 were retrospectively registered in the study. The mean age was 48.2 ± 8.6 years with 8.3% as sex-ratio

PURPOSE: Resection of the seizure focus leads to sustained seizure-freedom in intractable focal epilepsy in up to 80% of selected populations. However, surgery fails to help in a considerable proportion of patients. Reevaluation and reoperation may be considered in a selected group of patients with an unfavorable postsurgical outcome. Here, we reviewed 15 case series on reoperation after failed resective epilepsy surgery in adults in order to identify factors associated with a good chance of benefitting from a second operation.
METHODS: Literature review of case series describing the outcome

OBJECTIVE: Although it is recommended to perform completion thyroidectomy as soon as possible after the initial operation, there are no consensus guidelines about the appropriate time interval for the reoperation. The aim of the present study was to compare the postoperative complications, the amount of residual tissue, and postoperative thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroglobulin (Tg) levels following completion thyroidectomy that was performed at different time intervals.
STUDY DESIGN: Sixty patients who had already undergone bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy for benign colloidal goi

AIMS: Analysis of the reasons for reoperation after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
METHODS AND PATIENTS: Retrospective-prospective analyses of the first 250 patients who undergone laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In 86% cases indication for operation was chronic calculosis of gallbladder.
RESULTS: Reoperation was performed at 6 patients (2.4%). The reasons of reoperation were: haematoma of gallbladder's loge (1), biliary fistulas (1), biliary peritonitis (1), abdominal abscesses (2), and perforated peptic ulcer (1). At 2 patients with intraabdominal abscesses, it was solved by laparoscopic drain

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary autograft replacement of the aortic valve is accepted in the young, those with an active life style, and those who are not candidates for anticoagulation. However, concern remains about autograft or homograft valve failure.
METHODS: One hundred ninety-five operative survivors of the Ross operation (August 1986 through December 1995) were reviewed for operative pathology and factors associated with reoperation or valve dysfunction.
RESULTS: Actuarial freedom from reoperation (autograft or homograft) is 89% +/- 3% at 5 years, 92% +/- 3% for the autograft alone. Early auto

Of 49 patients with achalasia treated surgically between 1975 and 1985, 12 (8 women, 4 men) had undergone transthoracic esophagomyotomy previously. Four had had concomitant upper gastrointestinal surgery. All 12 patients complained of dysphagia; other symptoms included regurgitation, nocturnal aspiration, heartburn, chest pain, vomiting, upper gastrointestinal bleeding and weight loss. The average time from initial operation to onset of symptoms was 9 months. Preoperative investigations and operative findings identified the cause of dysphagia as inadequate or healed esophagomyotomy with persis
