Is the Hebb repetition task a reliable measure of individual differences in sequence learning?

The Hebb repetition task, an operationalization of long-term sequence learning through repetition, is the focus of renewed interest, as it is taken to provide a laboratory analogue for naturalistic vocabulary acquisition. Indeed, recent studies have consistently related performance in the Hebb repetition task with a range of linguistic (dis)abilities. However, despite the growing interest in the Hebb repetition effect as a theoretical construct, no previous research has ever tested whether the task used to assess Hebb learning offers a stable and reliable measure of individual performance in s

Phonological Priming in Children with Hearing Loss: Effect of Speech Mode, Fidelity, and Lexical Status.

OBJECTIVES: This research determined (1) how phonological priming of picture naming was affected by the mode (auditory-visual [AV] versus auditory), fidelity (intact versus nonintact auditory onsets), and lexical status (words versus nonwords) of speech stimuli in children with prelingual sensorineural hearing impairment (CHI) versus children with normal hearing (CNH) and (2) how the degree of HI, auditory word recognition, and age influenced results in CHI. Note that the AV stimuli were not the traditional bimodal input but instead they consisted of an intact consonant/rhyme in the visual tra

Assessing the effect of a true-positive recall case in screening mammography: does perceptual priming alter radiologists' performance?

OBJECTIVE: To measure the effect of the insertion of less-difficult malignant cases on subsequent breast cancer detection by breast imaging radiologists. METHODS: The research comprises two studies. Study 1: 8 radiologists read 2 sets of images each consisting of 40 mammographic cases. Set A contained four abnormal cases, and Set B contained six abnormal cases, including two priming cases (less difficult malignancies) placed at intervals of three and five subsequent cases before a subtle cancer. Study 2: 16 radiologists read a third condition of the same cases, known as Set C, containing six

Neural correlates of the implicit processing of grammatical and stereotypical gender violations: A masked and unmasked priming study.

The aim of this study was to explore the neural correlates of the automatic activation of gender stereotypes by using the masked and unmasked priming technique. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants were presented with an Italian third-person singular pronoun (lui or lei) that were preceded by either a grammatically-marked (e.g., passeggeraFEM, pensionatoMASC) or stereotypically-associated (e.g., insegnanteFEM, conducenteMASC) role noun. Participants were required to judge the grammatical gender of the personal pronoun ignoring the preceding word. This word was prese

Acute Effects of High-Speed Repetitive Loading on Achilles Tendon Viscoelasticity and Ankle Agonist-Antagonist Co-Contraction: A Combined MyotonPRO and Surface Electromyography Analysis in Male Collegiate American Football Players.

Background: Achilles tendon viscoelasticity and ankle neuromuscular co-contraction are functionally linked, yet how they jointly adapt during brief high-speed repetitive loading remains unclear. We simultaneously quantified Achilles tendon viscoelasticity (MyotonPRO) and ankle agonist-antagonist co-contraction (surface electromyography, sEMG) under two stance conditions and three repetition counts. Methods: Twenty-seven active male collegiate American football players (23.19 ± 2.63 years) performed rapid heel-raise/landing cycles in a bilateral ground stance (BGS) and a unilateral box stance (

What is a mantra? Guidance for practitioners, researchers, and editors.

Mantras, sometimes called holy names or prayer words, are increasingly included and studied as components in health and human services interventions. In this emerging field, the term "mantra" has been implicitly defined over several decades in a way that has been useful, largely shared across research teams, and historically resonant. However, confusion has arisen in how "mantra" is defined and used in a small fraction of recent publications that depart from longstanding usage. To provide needed guidance going forward for researchers, editors, reviewers, and practitioners, the present article

Spinal Cord Transcutaneous Stimulation Priming Largely Enhances Lower Limb Performance during a Simulated Power Training Session in Young Active Males.

PURPOSE: To investigate the potential efficacy of spinal cord transcutaneous stimulation (scTS) priming to enhance lower limb neuromuscular performance during a subsequent power training session. METHODS: Eleven young active males (age: 21.3 ± 1.6 yr) participated in this randomized crossover, sham-controlled study. The priming protocol consisted of the application of scTS or sham stimulation (Sham) at rest and during warm-up for approximately 25 min. Force, velocity, and power, as well as electromyography (EMG) of lower limbs generated during unilateral half squats on a Smith machine, were a

Significant repetition probability effects in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence suggests that the comparison of expected and incoming sensory stimuli (the prediction-error (ε) processing) is impaired in schizophrenia patients (SZ). For example, in studies of mismatch negativity, an ERP component that signals ε, SZ patients show deficits in the auditory and visual modalities. To test the role of impaired ε processing further in SZ, using neuroimaging methods, we applied a repetition-suppression (RS) paradigm. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with SZ (n = 17) as well as age- and sex- matched healthy control subjects (HC, n = 17) were prese

Explicit memory and implicit memory in occipital lobe stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Occipital stroke patients mainly showed cortical blindness and unilateral vision loss; memory is generally reserved. Recent reports from neuroimaging show the occipital lobe may be involved in the processing of implicit memory (IM), especially the perception type of IM processing. In this study, we explored the explicit memory (EM) and IM damage in occipital lobe stroke patients. METHODS: A total of 25 occipital strokes and 29 years of age, educational level equivalent healthy controls (HCs), evaluated by using immediate recall, delayed recall, recognition for EM tasks, picture id

The disconnection syndrome in the Alzheimer's disease: the cross-modal priming example.

Implicit memory is generally supposed to be preserved in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Yet, some implicit priming effects are impaired and others are not. The preserved/impaired priming effects are often interpreted according to the perceptual/conceptual or identification/production distinctions. Perceptual-identification priming paradigms shall be preserved and conceptual-production priming paradigms impaired. A third interpretation is yet possible based on the disconnection syndrome hypothesis which states that patients with AD should fail tasks requiring relatively complex brain communications.

Associative and categorical priming in a word-picture paradigm: a diffusion model analysis.

When we perceive language cues, they are processed with a high degree of automaticity and can thus guide the processing of subsequent perceptions. We investigated here how associated and categorically congruent prime words influence responses in a semantic picture categorization task. A hierarchical diffusion model is applied to disentangle the underlying cognitive processes. In the experiment, participants were asked to categorize target pictures as living or non-living. These target pictures were preceded by prime words, for which associations and semantic category match with targets were ma

Impaired automatic but intact volitional inhibition in primary tic disorders.

The defining character of tics is that they can be transiently suppressed by volitional effort of will, and at a behavioural level this has led to the concept that tics result from a failure of inhibition. However, this logic conflates the mechanism responsible for the production of tics with that used in suppressing them. Volitional inhibition of motor output could be increased to prevent the tic from reaching the threshold for expression, although this has been extensively investigated with conflicting results. Alternatively, automatic inhibition could prevent the initial excitation of the s

Repetition Suppression and Memory for Faces is Reduced in Adults with Autism Spectrum Conditions.

Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) are associated with a number of atypicalities in face processing, including difficulties in face memory. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this difficulty are unclear. In neurotypical individuals, repeated presentation of the same face is associated with a reduction in activity, known as repetition suppression (RS), in the fusiform face area (FFA). However, to date, no studies have investigated RS to faces in individuals with ASC, or the relationship between RS and face memory. Here, we measured RS to faces and geometric shapes in individuals with a cli

Threats to moral self-perceptions trigger obsessive compulsive contamination-related behavioral tendencies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Obsessive compulsive (OC) phenomena such as contamination fears may lead to significant impairment in daily functioning. In this research, we examined whether threat to moral self-perceptions can trigger contamination-related behavioral tendencies. METHOD: Three experiments examined the influence of subtle priming of morality-related information on contamination-related behavioral tendencies. RESULTS: Subtle suggestions of incompetence in the morality self-domain led to heightened OC-related behavioral tendencies. These effects were specific to self-relevant (versu

Delayed effects of heavy resistance or ballistic priming on sprint and agility in elite U19 football.

BACKGROUND: In elite football, optimization of physical performance increases athlete performance. Sprint and change of directional performance can be improved by previously conducting a priming protocol. However, it is unknown if this priming-induced performance enhancement is long-lasting. METHODS: Eighteen under 19 years old elite football players (mean ± standard deviation [SD] age: 17.8±0.8 years, height: 181±8 cm, body mass: 72±8 kg) with 34±6 months of strength training experience were tested in 30 m sprint and 505 agility without previous exercise (baseline) or 20 hours following a pr

Aesthetic liking in automatic processing: Distinct effects of perceptual and conceptual fluency.

In everyday life, aesthetic liking largely depends on the fluency of stimulus-driven, default, rapid, and automatic processing. However, our understanding of how perceptual and conceptual fluency jointly shape aesthetic liking in automatic processing remains limited. In two experiments, the masked priming paradigm was employed to manipulate perceptual and conceptual fluency of target stimuli separately, and participants were instructed to rate liking for colored images of everyday objects based on their initial impressions. The results indicated that the masked matched contours and words signi

Retrieval-Based Word Learning in Young Typically Developing Children and Children With Development Language Disorder II: A Comparison of Retrieval Schedules.

Purpose Retrieval practice has been found to be a powerful strategy to enhance long-term retention of new information; however, the utility of retrieval practice when teaching young children new words is largely unknown, and even less is known for young children with language impairments. The current study examined the effect of 2 different retrieval schedules on word learning at both the behavioral and neural levels. Method Participants included 16 typically developing children ( M TD = 61.58 months) and 16 children with developmental language disorder ( M DLD = 59.60 months). Children partic

On the relationship between negative affective priming and prefrontal cognitive control mechanisms.

Although several studies have examined inhibition of affective stimuli, valence-dependent cognitive control effects remain poorly understood. Behavioural and functional imaging (functional magnetic resonance imaging) data were collected from 17 healthy participants to examine neural correlates of the Negative Affective Priming (NAP) task. We created relative ratio scores considering the reaction times of prime trials in order to assess the amount of interference after the presentation of negative and positive distracter words. Behavioural results showed an attenuated NAP effect for negative di
