Healing from incest: resurrecting the buried self.

Writers on the incest experience estimate conservatively that 10% to 30% of all girls and 30% of all boys have had at least one childhood experience of incest. Incest is emotionally devastating to a child as it involves betrayal, and the irretrievable loss of trust in the adults in the child's life. Little is written about the healing processes of incest survivors. The purpose of this study was to generate a substantive grounded theory that provides an explanatory schema for understanding the healing process of adult female incest survivors. The sample consisted of 10 adult women who had a his

Children who are victims of sexual assault and the psychology of offenders.

Psychiatrists and others have too often discounted reports of sexual attacks upon children and ascribed the incident to fantasy. The author's experience in private psychoanalytic practice and in Philadelphia's rape victim clinics indicates that these assaults occur frequently. If the sexual attack is dealt with improperly or repressed it may cause serious psychologic problems for the victim as an adult.

False memories as a function of language proficiency: Differences between semantic and phonological processing.

Recent studies using verbal list-learning tasks have examined how language proficiency affects intrusion rates using semantic/associative lists. Typically, false memories decrease as language proficiency decreases; a finding consistent with fuzzy trace theory (gist extraction is less effective when items are less familiar; Brainerd & Reyna, Current Directions in Psychological Science, 11, 164-169, 2002) and with the activation/monitoring framework (semantic networks are less developed; Roediger et al., 2001). Native and non-native speakers (high and low proficiency, determined based on subject

Relation between Deese-Roediger-Mcdermott recall measures of false memory and the fading affect bias.

The fading affect bias (FAB) is the faster fading of unpleasant affect than pleasant affect for autobiographical event memories, and it is considered a healthy coping mechanism because it is positively related to healthy measures (e.g., self-esteem and positive PANAS), whereas it is negatively related to unhealthy measures (e.g., psychological distress and negative PANAS). Some researchers suggest that Deese-Roediger McDermott (DRM) critical lure false memories for words are conceptually equivalent to false memories for autobiographical event memories, which has not been examined. Based on the

Maltreatment increases spontaneous false memories but decreases suggestion-induced false memories in children.

We examined the creation of spontaneous and suggestion-induced false memories in maltreated and non-maltreated children. Maltreated and non-maltreated children were involved in a Deese-Roediger-McDermott false memory paradigm where they studied and remembered negative and neutral word lists. Suggestion-induced false memories were created using a misinformation procedure during which both maltreated and non-maltreated children viewed a negative video (i.e., bank robbery) and later received suggestive misinformation concerning the event. Our results showed that maltreated children had higher lev

Clinical holistic medicine: how to recover memory without "implanting" memories in your patient.

Every therapeutic strategy and system teach us the philosophy of the treatment system to the patient, but often this teaching is subliminal and the philosophical impact must be seen as "implanted philosophy", which gives distorted interpretations of past events called "implanted memories". Based on the understanding of the connection between "implanted memory" and "implanted philosophy" we have developed a strategy for avoiding implanting memories arising from one of the seven most common causes of implanted memories in psychodynamic therapy: 1) Satisfying own expectancies, 2) pleasing the the

A previously-untranslated report by Freud of a lecture on the mechanism of obsessional ideas and phobias.

This is an English translation of Freud's report of a lecture that he delivered in 1895 on the 'Mechanism of obsessional ideas and phobias'. The report was not included in the Standard Edition of Freud's psychological works, and nor was it included in any of the other collections of his writings. The lecture described in this report seems to have been derived directly from Freud's contemporaneous essay on 'Obsessions and phobias' (1895b). However there are a few discrepancies between the two, and these are discussed in the footnotes to the translation.

Psychosocial factors and their association with reflux oesophagitis, Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal adenocarcinoma.

AIM: To investigate the role of psychological characteristics as risk factors for oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC), as well as the reflux-mediated precursor pathway. METHODS: An all-Ireland population-based case-control study recruited 230 reflux oesophagitis (RO), 224 Barrett's oesophagus (BO) and 227 OAC patients and 260 controls. Each case/control group completed measures of stress, depression, self-efficacy, self-esteem, repression and social support. A comparative analysis was undertaken using polytomous logistic regression adjusted for potential confounders. RESULTS: Compared to contro

Memory for murder. A psychological perspective on dissociative amnesia in legal contexts.

There is currently a complex and inconsistent state in the law relating to dissociation and dissociative amnesia (McSherry, 1998). Although dissociative amnesia in defendants is relevant to both competency to stand trial and criminal responsibility in principle, courts have typically assumed a skeptical stance toward such claims in practice. However, there is considerable evidence from both nonoffender and offender populations to support the validity of dissociative amnesia in defendants. Further, there is information available to aid in the evaluation of amnesia, such as the quality of the re

Amnestic state in a Holocaust survivor patient: psychogenic versus neurological basis.

Differentiation between psychogenic and organic amnesia is sometimes quite difficult. This paper focuses on the psychogenic and organic components of a complex case of amnesia rooted in remote and prolonged traumatic stress and manifested under circumstances evoking dissociated memories. The Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) of a concentration camp survivor who developed sudden amnesia during a psychiatric intake interview was clearly triggered by the pressure of repressed Holocaust memories. The importance of distinguishing between TGA and dissociative amnesia is emphasized, and the role of psyc

Event-related potential correlates of functional hearing loss: reduced P3 amplitude with preserved N1 and N2 components in a unilateral case.

A female patient exhibiting functional hearing loss in her left ear demonstrated reduced amplitude of P3 component in event-related potentials (ERP) to left monaural stimulation, with preserved N1 and N2 components to stimulation of either ear. This result suggested that stimuli in the affected ear were conducted successfully up to the auditory cortex but that further processing in higher brain regions was 'repressed'. Event-related potential examination for such hysterical disorders could be useful in clarifying their brain mechanism and offer a useful diagnostic clue to its nature.

Delayed recall of childhood sexual abuse: psychiatric nursing's responsibilities to clients.

In no other area of psychiatric care is such suspicion being cast on clients as in the area of delayed recall of childhood sexual abuse. Adult survivors of childhood abuse are encountered in nursing contexts of all kinds. Psychiatric nurses should be the ones that other nurses and members of the public can look to for guidance and clinical wisdom about dissociative amnesia for childhood abuse. It is incumbent on psychiatric nurses, especially those who publish about clinical issues, to provide the most accurate and complete available knowledge, to prioritize clients' needs, and to recommend ca

The contributions of self-defeating philosophies, perceived helplessness, and repression to anxiety among psychiatric patients.

Four of the most influential psychological explanations for the development of anxiety attribute it to (1) repressed awareness of undesirable emotions; (2) the emergence of unacceptable feelings from the unconscious; (3) adherence to irrational, self-defeating philosophies; and (4) perceived helplessness/lack of control over one's affairs. To test these theories, the authors administered the Trait Anxiety, Denial, Irrational Beliefs, and Locus of Control scales to 190 psychiatric inpatients. Appropriate zero-order, attenuation-corrected, multiple, and partial correlations were run. Denial was

Empirical classification of emotional adjustment reactions.

The validity of a diagnostic classification scheme for the emotional adjustment reactions of children is tested, and empirical findings are offered in support of a descriptive approach to classification. Results validate clinical observations of four types of children commonly seen for emotional adjustment reactions. Further research is proposed to develop instruments for personality assessment that would be sensitive to these categories.

Can maltreated children inhibit true and false memories for emotional information?

The authors examined 284 maltreated and nonmaltreated children's (6- to 12-year-olds) ability to inhibit true and false memories for neutral and emotional information using the Deese/Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm. Children studied either emotional or neutral DRM lists in a control condition or were given directed-remembering or directed-forgetting instructions. The findings indicated that children, regardless of age and maltreatment status, could inhibit the output of true and false emotional information, although they did so less effectively than when they were inhibiting the output of ne

Comparing thought suppression and mindfulness as coping techniques for spider fear.

The current study compared thought suppression, focused attention (mindfulness) and unfocused attention as strategies for managing spider fear. Spider fearful participants were exposed to a strategy induction before completing a Behavioural Approach Test (BAT). The BAT is a 10 step measurement of how close participants are willing to move towards a spider. Participants were instructed to use what they learned in the pre-BAT induction to help them advance through the steps of the BAT. The results of the study indicated that participants given the thought suppression or the unfocused attention i

Beyond "true" and "false" memories: remembering and recovery in the survival of childhood sexual abuse.

As survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) struggle to grasp and reclaim their selves, their stories, and their futures from the grip of aftereffects of trauma, the processes of recovery and rehabilitation are interwoven with remembering. Questions about women's delayed memories of CSA have stirred a controversy that places clients' credibility at stake. Nurses need to understand the historical and political roots of this controversy and to be familiar with the empirical knowledgebase that exists about traumatic memory. This article is a critical feminist analysis of the topic. Its purposes

False recognition in women with a history of childhood emotional neglect and diagnose of recurrent major depression.

While previous research has suggested that adults with a history of childhood sexual abuse may be more prone to produce false memories, little is known about the consequences of childhood neglect on basic memory processes. For this reason, the authors investigated how a group of women with a history of childhood emotional neglect (CEN) and diagnosed with recurrent Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) performed on the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm in comparison to control groups. The results indicated that women with MDD and CEN were actually less prone to produce false memories relative to both
